Vice President Kamala Harris to Celebrate 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop at the Naval Observatory

On Saturday (Sept. 9), Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris will have Common, Jeezy, MC Lyte, Roxanne Shante and more to celebrate at her home as a part of a Hip-Hop 50 celebration, honoring the genre and its impact on American culture.

Harris, along with The Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective and Live Nation, will highlight the importance of the genre by holding a commemoration with more than 400 guests in attendance at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. Serving as the first event of its kind, this hip-hop event will look to reinforce the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to celebrating the arts.

“The Recording Academy and the Black Music Collective have had a tremendous year paying tribute to and honoring the legacy of hip-hop in its milestone 50th year,” said Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, in a statement. “Taking the celebration to our nation’s capital alongside Vice President Harris is truly something special and I look forward to a historic day.”

The White House paid homage to hip-hop during its Juneteenth event in June, where Method Man spoke at the inaugural concert. “This concert is a fitting way to recognize Juneteenth and express this part of our shared American history,” he said at the time. “For it is through music that African-Americans found community and sought solace. Music has the power to uplift us, to enrich our minds and nourish our souls.”

He added: “From spirituals to gospel, R&B, jazz, rock, soul, and yes y’all, 50 years of Hip Hop, ya heard?! Each generation of Black musicians, artists and thought leaders have channeled the struggles of their lifetime into the American soundtrack.”

Friday Music Guide: New Music From Olivia Rodrigo, Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion, Tyler Childers and More

Billboard’s Friday Music Guide serves as a handy guide to this Friday’s most essential releases — the key music that everyone will be talking about today, and that will be dominating playlists this weekend and beyond.

This week (July 28), Olivia Rodrigo shows listeners she’s got the Guts with her sophomore LP, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion team up again to recapture that old “WAP” magic, Tyler Childers and d4vd keep it brief and more.

Olivia Rodrigo, Guts

There might not be a more anticipated sophomore LP released in 2023 than Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts, follow-up to her game-changing Sour release two years earlier. While the album was preceded by a pair of top 10 hits in the bloody ballad “Vampire” and the winking new-waver “Bad Idea Right?” Guts shows those songs to be just two of many new career highlights, including the shuffling, double-meaning pop-rock singalong “Get Him Back!” and the heartbroken (but responsibility-splitting) “Logical.” Read our list of every track ranked here, and look forward to spending a lot of time with these songs in your life over the rest of the year.

Cardi B feat. Megan Thee Stallion, “Bongos”

They made magic once before with the Hot 100-topping “WAP,” and now rap titans Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have reunited for another club-killing collab with the appropriately hard-hitting “Bongos.” It’s another fun, frisky teamup with another colorful, choreo-heavy video — hopefully with less ridiculous controversy surrounding it this time — that should extend the summer for at least another week or two past labor day on its own. Make sure you stick around for Cardi’s late-song callback to Pitbull and Lil Jon’s underrated 2005 hit “Toma.”

Tyler Childers, Rustin’ in the Rain EP

The timing could not be better for a full-length Tyler Childers release, coming off not only the good reception for his own Hot 100-debuting new single “In Your Love,” but the massive, chart-topping success of fellow Americana purveyors Zach Bryan and Oliver Anthony Music. You could maybe argue the true “full-length” qualifications of Rustin’ in the Rain — it’s seven tracks and 28 minutes, which is just barely out of EP territory — but what’s here should still be plenty to keep the singer-songwriter’s ever-growing fanbase satisfied, including “Love,” the rollicking title track, and a powerful cover of the Kris Kristofferson-penned country staple “Help Me Make It Through the Night.”

D4vd, The Lost Petals

Teenage singer-songwriter D4vd became both a viral phenomenon and a Hot 100-charting artist in late 2022 and early 2023 with his gauzy breakthrough hits “Romantic Homicide” and “Here With Me.” With his two EP releases this year — the previously released Petals to Thorns and this week’s bonus follow-up Lost Petals — he’s showing that those singles were really just the beginning, with both his songwriting and his sonics continuing to develop at a rapid rate. Try the fragile, Joji-like piano balladry of “Poetic Vulgarity” from this one, or the Mac DeMarco-worthy wooziness of closing groover “Once More.”

Marshmello & Dove Cameron, “Other Boys”

Shout out to Australian house duo Flight Facilities and singer-songwriter Giselle, whose sublimely longing 2010 collaboration “Crave You” was one of great understated pop gems of its era. Outside of the Land Down Under, the song was hardly a huge mainstream hit — but two artists evidently still familiar with its charms are DJ/producer Marshmello and breakout singer-songwriter Dove Cameron, who refashion the song’s chorus into the backbone of the hook to their new joint single “Other Boys.” There’s not a ton to the song once they get past the lift — at a scant 2:17, there’s not a whole lot of song here, period — but it’s a fun flashback for those of us still craving more floor-fillers like “Crave You.”

The Rolling Stones, “Angry”

One of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time — and probably the longest-enduring — is back. Hackney Diamonds, due in late October, will be the Rolling Stones’ first album since 2016’s covers set Blue and Lonesome, and their first since the death of longtime drummer Charlie Watts. The LP is led by the ripping new single “Angry,” showcasing the group still in fine form sixty years after their debut album — and still plenty vital for the younger generation(s). Of course, it never hurts to have one of the biggest young actresses in your music video, as the Stones show with their casting of Euphoria and White Lotus star Sydney Sweeney in the “Angry” visual.

Polaris Reigns on Australia’s Chart With ‘Fatalism’

Polaris rocks Australia’s albums chart with Fatalism, while Doja Cat extends her streak atop the national singles survey with “Paint The Town Red”.

Hailing from Sydney, melodic metalcore merchants Polaris powers to a first ever-leader with Fatalism (Resist Records/Orchard), bowing at the summit of the ARIA Chart, published Sept. 8.

Fatalism is the band’s third studio album, and third appearance in the top 10. The five-piece landed at No. 6 with 2017 debut The Mortal Coil; peaked at No. 3 with its 2017 followup The Death Of Me, while 2016 EP The Guilt & The Grief reached No. 34.

Polaris this week kicked off its national tour in support of Fatalism, which will be followed with a return to the U.K. and Europe supporting While She Sleeps, with a North American headline run later in October (including a date at Aftershock Festival 2023).

Following the expansion of his stadium tour Down Under, the Weeknd’s catalog knuckles down on the ARIA Chart. The Highlights (Universal) rises 3-2, ahead of Travis Scott’s Utopia (Epic/Sony), while a second Weeknd record impacts the top 5, his former leader album Starboy, holding at No. 4.

Zach Bryan is one of several U.S. country stars enjoying hits on both main ARIA Charts this year. His self-titled fourth studio album Zach Bryan (Warner) dips 2-5, and he’s close to cracking the top 10 on the national singles chart with two tracks, his duet with Kacey Musgraves “I Remember Everything” (Universal/Warner) up 19-11 in its second week, and “Something In The Orange” (Warner), unchanged at No. 12 in its 60th week on the tally.

At the pointy end of the ARIA Singles Chart is Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red” (RCA/Sony), the leader for a third successive week. Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” (No. 2 via Universal) and Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” (No. 3 via Republic/Universal) complete an unchanged podium.

Finally, Kylie Minogue cracks the ARIA Chart with “Tension” (Liberation), the title track from her forthcoming 16th studio album, due out Sept. 22. It’s the follow up to “Padam Padam,” which peaked at No. 19 on the ARIA Chart earlier in 2023, for her 56th top 100 chart appearance in her homeland. “Padam Padam” also cracked the top 10 in the U.K., for her 35th top tier effort in her adopted home.

BTS’ V Drops His Debut Solo Set ‘Layover’: Stream It Now

BTSV is ready for his closeup.

At the stroke of midnight, the K-pop superstar unleashed his debut solo LP, Layover.

The collection spans six tracks – the previously released “Rainy Days,” “Blue,” first cut “Love Me Again,” “Slow Dancing,” “For Us” and a bonus track piano version of “Slow Dancing” – and they’re meant to be played in a specific order.

In a release from BIGHIT last month, the music company suggest play tracks from 1-5, noting that “Slow Dancing” is the focus number of the collection, describing it as a “1970s romantic soul style track [that] exudes a laid-back and free-spirited feeling.”

The set is accompanied with a visual stimulant; all five tracks will have official music videos.

As previously reported, V worked with NewJeans creative director/ADOR president Hee Jin Min on the album, with BIGHIT revealing that Min oversaw the entire production of the collection, including music, choreography, design and promotion.

V’s previous solo efforts include “Stigma,” “Singularity,” “Winter Bear” and “Inner Child”; his most recent original solo songs are 2021’s “Christmas Tree,” which was on the soundtrack of the Netflix K-drama Our Beloved Summer and last year’s version of the holiday classic “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.”

The release of V’s collection follows the start of bandmate Suga’s military enlistment process, becoming the third member to enlist in South Korea’s mandatory military service, following Jin and J-Hope.

BTS are, of course, world-beaters with six No.1 Billboard Hot 100 singles since 2020, a growing collection of industry honors (including Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards), and they’re two-time winners of the IFPI’s Global Recording Artist of the Year, in doing so becoming the only group to double up for the prestigious award, and only act to win over consecutive years.

Stream Layover and watch the official music videos below.

Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Guts’: All 12 Songs Ranked

There are a million reasons why a musical artist catches lightning and sends a song to the top of the charts: Maybe they’re a superstar with a bulletproof commercial offering, or they’re an unknown riding cultural headwinds to a strong reaction, or they’re somewhere in between, with the right TikTok challenge at the right time. Sometimes, though, they’re just that good — commandingly, undeniably good — with a song that showcases that talent.

That’s how it felt in January 2021, when the co-star of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series released her debut single.

With the still-dazzling “Drivers License,” Olivia Rodrigo arrived as a fully formed pop savant, capable of piercing turns of phrase, major-key choruses and bridges that stop you in your tracks and force you to sway along. Of course her debut album, 2021’s Sour, was just as impressively detailed and sumptuously catchy; of course songs like “good 4 u” and “Deja Vu” became just as ubiquitous on top 40 radio and streaming services; of course the best new artist Grammy was in the bag; of course the first headlining shows were giddy shout-alongs. With a preternatural talent like Rodrigo, the artistic and commercial successes felt predestined from the moment we first heard, “‘Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street.”

With Guts, Rodrigo’s feverishly anticipated sophomore album, the rocket ship keeps climbing higher and higher: if Sour represented a rock-solid, no-skips debut, its follow-up is a bigger and better sequel, more confident and gripping in almost every way. The personal stakes are higher as Rodrigo gestures at the life changes (and expectations) that her newfound stardom have produced, but she matches them by thrusting her songwriting into more adventurous, and rewarding, territory.

Rodrigo expands upon the heartbreak central to Sour on songs like “Logical” and “Love Is Embarrassing,” but also addresses fame leeches (“Vampire”), social awkwardness (“Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl”), body image standards (“Pretty Isn’t Pretty”) and pre-adulthood anxieties (“Teenage Dream”), among other topics. Just like he did on Sour, Dan Nigro, Rodrigo’s main studio collaborator, helps push the right buttons while getting out of the way of her towering songwriting, as the pair hopscotch through pop-punk, new wave, indie-folk and hushed balladry without sounding haphazardly constructed or dulling any one-liners.

Because that’s what stands out the most on the first few listens of Guts: the way Rodrigo can bring a lyric to life with a gut-punch metaphor or a pitch-perfect vocal delivery. That gift stood out on Sour, and has sharpened on its follow-up. “I am built like a mother, and a total machine/ I feel for your every little issue, I know just what you mean,” she sings on opener “All-American B–ch,” crystallizing the impossibility of Relatable Female Pop Stardom in one lilting rhyme. On “The Grudge.,” Rodrigo flattens a breakup into, “We both drew blood, but man, those cuts were never equal.” And on “Making the Bed,” Rodrigo distills the ephemeral nature of success: “Another perfect moment that doesn’t feel like mine/ Another thing I forced to be a sign.” Guts has plenty of potential singles to join the already-minted Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right?,” but those lyrics — the ones that feel painfully perfect, that you want to write down for your own inspiration — are even more plentiful.

That remarkable songwriting ability is what ultimately separated Rodrigo when “Drivers License” launched, and what makes the sky her limit today. With Guts, Rodrigo has released the most complete pop album of the year, and nudged her trajectory even higher.

All 12 songs on the standard edition of the album are top-notch, but which are the early standouts? Here is a preliminary ranking of every song on Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts.

Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion Reunite For ‘Bongos’: Stream It Now

You thought it was over? Think again! Record-breaking “WAP” collaborators Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are back with a new single titled “Bongos.” The song officially hit all digital download and streaming platforms on Friday, Sep. 8.

Related

Obviously, “Bongos” serves as the first collaboration between the two rap queens since 2020’s “WAP,” but don’t make any rash assumption about the new song. “I wonder how people are gonna react to this vibe because they’re really, like, expecting ‘WAP,’ like, ‘oh, here they go again talking this and that,’” Cardi said. “We are talking a little, you know, about some p—y, but not like ‘WAP’ type of stuff.”

Cardi first announced “Bongos” via social media on Monday, Sep. 4. She shared the track’s cover art, which features her and Megan sucking on lollipops while posing in elaborate multi-colored wigs and skimpy swimsuits. The song’s announcement came less than two weeks after the Bronx rapper told Vogue México y Latinoamérica, “I’m not going to release any more collaborations, I’m going to put out my next solo single.” While it is still unclear if “Bongos” will appear on Cardi’s forthcoming sophomore studio album, fans can bask in the song’s “intricate… beautiful” accompanying music video.

“Bongos” is the latest in a string of Cardi B collaborations this year. Prior to this, she scored Billboard Hot 100 hits alongisde Latto (“Put It On Da Floor Again,” No. 13), Fendi DaRappa (“Point Me 2,” No. 82) and husband Offset (“Jealousy,” No. 55). The new collaboration will also serve as Megan Thee Stallion’s first release of the year. The Houston rapper has been taking sometime for herself to focus on her physical and mental health following her shooting at the hands of Tory Lanez and the lengthy trial and media circus that followed.

“WAP” debuted atop the Hot 100 on the chart dated Aug. 22. The song debuted with 93 million official on-demand U.S. streams in its first full week of availability, the greatest total for any song in history. The culture-shifting collaboration — which spurred thousands of FCC complaints after the two artists performed it at the 2021 Grammys — ultimately spent four weeks atop the Hot 100.

On the Hot 100, Cardi B has earned five No. 1 singles, including “Bodak Yellow,” “Girls Like You” (with Maroon 5) and “Up.” Invasion of Privacy, her debut studio album, peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has spent over 220 weeks on the ranking. Megan Thee Stallion has earned five top 10 titles on the Billboard 200 and three top 10 singles on the Hot 100, including the No. 1 single “Savage” (with Beyoncé).

Rodrigo has been teasing the follow-up to Sour for over a year now. After dropping Easter eggs in Spotify canvases and teasing fans with seconds-long snippets, she unleashed lead single “Vampire” on June 30.

The track became Rodrigo’s third to debut atop the Billboard Hot 100, and has since spent nearly every week post-release in the chart’s top 10. A promotional single titled “Bad Idea Right?” followed on Aug. 11. That song featured a markedly more frantic tempo to complement the ballad-rock opera fusion that was “Vampire.” “Bad Idea Right?” entered Hot Rock & Alternative Songs at No. 1, becoming her second overall entry and second No. 1 single on the chart.

With Sour, Rodrigo and Nigo struck gold. The album won thee Grammys (including best pop vocal album), spent five weeks atop the Billboard 200, and spawned the Hot 100 No. 1 singles “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U.” The tracklist for Guts, in addition to the aforementioned singles, includes eye-popping titles such as “All-American Bitch” and “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl.”

In just a few days (Sep. 12), Rodrigo will perform at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. As TMZ noted, Bryan’s most recent social media post is a photo of his dog in the passenger seat of a car with the caption “On the road again, gonna go see the birds win.” The Instagram Story is timestamped around 7 p.m. ET, so near the time of his booking at 7:42 p.m. ET (6:42 p.m. local time), according to the Craig County Sheriff’s website. It appears that Bryan is en route to see his favorite NFL team, the Philadelphia Eagles, take on the New England Patriots in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday for their week 1 match-up.

It’s been a banner professional week for the breakout music star, who scored his first Billboard 200 No. 1 album with his new self-titled project and his first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song with “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves, debuting atop both lists this week. Concurrently, all 16 songs from the album debut on the Hot 100.

Bryan broke through in 2022 with his American Heartbreak album and its slow-burning hit song “Something in the Orange,” which was a top 10 hit on the Hot 100.

Read his social post in full below.

Today, I had an incident with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Emotions got the best of me, and I was out of line in the things I said. I support law enforcement as much as anyone can. I was just frustrated in the moment. It was unlike me, and I apologize. They brought me to jail, and there is a mug shot of me floating around. Prayers we can all move on from this and prayers people know I’m just trying the best I can. I love you guys, and I am truly sorry to the officers.

Ezra Collective Becomes First Jazz Act to Win the Mercury Prize

Ezra Collective’s Where I’m Meant to Be won the Mercury Prize on Thursday (Sept. 7), making the London jazz quintet the first jazz act to win that prestigious award. The Mercury Prize celebrates the best of British and Irish music across a range of contemporary music genres. This year’s ceremony was held at Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith, London.

Accepting the award, drummer Femi Koleoso said, “This is not just a result for Ezra Collective, or for UK jazz, but this is a special moment for every single organization across the country, ploughing efforts and time into young people playing music.”

Related

Where I’m Meant to Be, Ezra Collective’s second studio album, was written and recorded in lockdown. But rather than reflect the isolation of the COVID-19 era, the album has been described by BBC as “a joyous celebration of community, positivity and friendship.”

The album was produced by the band and Riccardo Damian, and features a diverse roster of musicians, including Sampa the Great, Kojey Radical, Emeli Sandé and Nao, as well as filmmaker Steve McQueen.

Where I’m Meant to Be reached No. 24 on the Official U.K. Albums chart, a strong showing for a jazz album. On this side of the pond, it debuted and peaked at No. 15 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart.

The album was nominated for best jazz record at the 2022 Libera Awards. But it draws on several other genres, including grime, salsa and reggae.

Speaking to BBC News after being announced as winners, Koleoso explained: “We’re the shuffle generation of music, we listen to some Beethoven, and then 50 Cent comes on straight after, and then Little Simz comes on just after that. And that kind of influences the way we approach music. So, there are no rules. We love jazz, but at the same time we love salsa too, so why not try and get that in there?”

The other albums in contention for the top prize were Arctic Monkeys’ The Car, Fred again.’s Actual Life 3 (January 1 – September 9 2022), J Hus’ Beautiful and Brutal Yard, Jessie Ware’s That! Feels Good!, Jockstrap’s I Love You Jennifer B, Lankum’s False Lankum, Loyle Carner’s hugo, Olivia Dean’s Messy, RAYE’s My 21st Century Blues, Shygirl’s Nymph and Young Fathers’ Heavy Heavy.

Broadcaster Lauren Laverne hosted the ceremony, which featured live performances from nine of the shortlisted artists, including Jessie Ware and RAYE.

Last year’s Mercury Prize winner was London rapper Little Simz for her fourth album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert.
