Adidas CEO Talks Kanye West After Yeezy Fallout: ‘I Don’t Think he Meant What he Said’

Adidas’ once glorious partnership with Kanye West turned sour, then legal, and unfolded as a headache of enormous proportions when the rapper made antisemitic comments on social media and in interviews.

Almost a year after the German sportswear company cut ties with Ye, its CEO has no hard feelings.

Bjørn Gulden, the Norwegian CEO of Adidas, shared his thoughts on West and the background to that very public fallout for a recent podcast.

Noting that Kanye’s relationship with Adidas pre-dated his own appointment to the top job on Jan. 1, 2023, Gulden remarked, “I think Kanye West is one of the most creative people in the world, both in music and what I would call street culture. He’s extremely creative.” And together, both parties created the Yeezy sneakers line “which was very successful.”

Putting creativity to one side, Ye “made some statements which wasn’t that good,” Gulden continued. “That caused (Adidas) to break that contract and withdraw the product. Very unfortunate, because I don’t think he meant what he said and I don’t think he’s a bad person, it just came across that way.”

Speaking with Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management, for the In Good Company podcast, Gulden said Ye’s remarks “meant we lost that business, one of the most successful collabs in history. Very sad. But again, when you work with third parties that can happen. It’s part of the game. That can happen with an athlete, with an entertainer. It’s part of the business.”

Adidas cut ties with Ye last October, raising questions about the fate of 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) worth of unsold Yeezys. At Adidas’ annual shareholders meeting in May of this year, Gulden revealed that Adidas would try to sell part of the remaining Yeezy inventory and “donate money to the organizations that help us and were harmed by what Ye said.”

By ending its association with Ye, Adidas took a bath. The split contributed to a loss of 600 million euros ($655 million) in sales for the last three months of 2022, helping drive the company to a quarterly net loss of 513 million euros. Adidas reported 400 million euros ($441 million) in lost sales at the start of 2023.

Gulden, formerly CEO of rival sneaker specialist Puma, succeeded Kasper Rorsted at the helm of Adidas, who was in charge of the business from 2016 until his departure November 2022.

Angélique Kidjo, JP Saxe Lead Intimate Concert For United Nations Human Rights

Angélique Kidjo and JP Saxe have thrown their talents behind a special invite-only concert in New York, part of an expanding United Nations initiative to highlight climate justice and rights-based climate action.

Kidjo, the five-time Grammy Award-winning Beninese-French singer-songwriter, and Saxe, the Grammy nominated Canadian singer and musician, both performed at a private industry event, hosted at the Recording Academy’s office with reps from UN Human Rights watching on.

The Recording Academy is the official music partner of Right Here, Right Now Music, supported by United Nations Human Rights, with both organizations coming together to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the universal declaration of human rights, created in the wake of WWII to outline universal human rights.

Guests at the intimate show also learned “alarming new facts” about the escalating human rights crisis caused by climate change, according to a joint statement.

The music-led project is just getting started. Some of the “most popular arena acts” will be encouraged to use their considerable voice to elevate climate issue for the Right Here, Right Now Mini Global Climate Concert series. As-yet unannounced major artists will be tapped to perform in “small iconic concert venues” around the world, a statement explains, while shining a light on climate issues such as floods, droughts, fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, clean water, ocean acidity, deforestation, as well as food insecurity, mental health, and more.

The first international activation is set for Dec. 9 with a show at the Atlantis in Dubai during COP28, the UN’s annual global climate change conference.

Grammy-nominated Lumineers’ frontman Wesley Schultz and British singer-songwriter YOLA performed at the first U.S. event, held April 13 in Boulder, Colorado, at which the performers delivered speeches “addressing the importance of utilizing music as a tool to combat climate change,” read a joint statement issued at the time.

Berlin, London, Kigali, Seoul, and Rio de Janeiro are among the cities being considered for Right Here, Right Now Mini Global Climate Concerts next year.

Through the climate concerts, says David Clark, founder and CEO of Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance, parent organization of Right Here, Right Now Music, “we seek to reframe the climate crisis as the fundamental human rights crisis that it is and thank the Recording Academy and UN Human Rights for being such dedicated partners in this worldwide effort.”

Adds Harvey Mason jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, “I look forward to working alongside UN Human Rights to showcase how the power of music can raise awareness and help promote change surrounding human rights issues around the world.”

Proceeds from the concert series will go to United Nations Human Rights climate justice initiatives and music industry charity MusiCares.

The Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Alliance was presented at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland and has earned support from a growing list of artists, including Jack Black, Camila Cabello, Cher, Dead & Company, Celine Dion, Michael Franti, Quincy Jones, Kesha, Cyndi Lauper, Annie Lennox, LL Cool J, Pitbull, Joss Stone, Bob Weir, and more.

When law enforcement went to a residence to search for the body, Tilton fired shots at them.

They later searched the residence and found several guns.

Freddie Lewis Tilton, also known as “Ol’ Boy,” 50, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool to one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping and two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

By pleading guilty today, Tilton admitted that he participated in a conspiracy to kidnap the victim, identified as “M.H.,” in July 2020. Co-defendants Carla Jo Ward, 49, of Joplin, James B. According to the plea agreement, Ward picked up M.H., whom she knew was being sought by Tilton, and took him to Vaughan’s residence. Tilton, Thomas, and Gibson arrived at Vaughan’s residence in the early morning hours of July 15, 2020. They bound M.H.’s hands with handcuffs, and duct tape was placed around his mouth and other parts of his body. Gibson, Thomas, and others assaulted M.H. for a period of time. M.H. was cut, beaten, shot at, and burned with a blowtorch. As M.H. became bloody, Vaughan placed a plastic tarp on the floor. Tilton fatally shot M.H. in the head. Mýa Looks Back on 25 Years in the Music Industry: ‘It’s Just a Beautiful Journey’

After 25 years in the music industry, Mýa is showing no signs of slowing down. The pop-R&B star made her debut in 1998, when she put out her self-titled studio album via Interscope Records. The debut single from the album, “It’s All About Me” with Sisqó, reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and put the world onto Mýa’s sultry, angelic voice and cutting-edge R&B sound that infiltrated the mainstream pop market while drawing influences from hip-hop, dancehall, techno and more.

Related

She revealed in a new interview with Billboard News that the outfit she wore in the “It’s All About Me” music video, which was inspired by the traditional red Chinese wedding dress, is her all-time favorite look. “I sketched that outfit on paper, drew the designs that I wanted and I saw it come to life,” she said. “But this is something that I’ve been doing for years. I have this whole sketchbook of outfits that I wanted to create before I signed my first deal. And so, that was one of them. The seamstress brought it to life, and that was an amazing experience for me as a brand new artist.”

In June, she re-created the UNC jersey dress from her 2000 “Best of Me (Part 2)” video, featuring Jay-Z, while she was performing at Charlotte R&B Music Experience. (This reporter also re-created the UNC jersey dress look, as well as Mýa’s outfit from the 1999 “Take Me There” video with Blackstreet, Mase and Blinky Blink, due to endless claims that she resembles the singer. Decide for yourself in the video interview above!)

Aside from her iconic looks, pop-dancehall collaborations have been another constant in Mýa’s storied career. Over the years, she’s worked with Jamaican reggae and dancehall artists like Beenie Man (“Girls Dem Sugar,” “Lie Detector,” “Docta”), Sean Paul (“Things Come & Go”), Spice (“Take Him Out”) and, most recently, Bounty Killer, on her latest steamy single “Whine.”

“Funny story is I had a solo version of the video shot two years prior to reaching out to Bounty Killer,” she says. “And I’ve always wanted a feature on that record. And so we went back down to Jamaica two years later, to the same location, and put Bounty Killer in the video, inserted him, and it all looks cohesive now.”

Of her pop-dancehall collaborations, Mýa says they feel like a family effort. “Every time I go down there, it’s usually for music. But then my associates, music friends, become like family over the years. We understand the beauty of independency but also working together. And so, that’s a big part of the culture, too,” she explains. “I think it’s important also to just be authentic for representation, so it was important for me to be in Kingston, in the heart of Jamaica, to capture the essence of the good vibes and the music, the culture and the people and the dance.”

Outside of her debut LP’s 25th anniversary this year, Mýa also celebrated the 20th anniversary of her third album Moodring, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and earned her another Hot 100 top 20 hit with “My Love is Like…Wo.” (Missy Elliott co-produced the track two years after working with her on the five-week No. 1, Grammy-winning smash “Lady Marmalade” with Christina Aguilera, P!nk and Lil’ Kim from the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack.)

Earlier this year, she collaborated with Interscope/UMe to release the digital deluxe 25th anniversary edition of Mya, the digital deluxe 20th anniversary edition of Moodring and the “25th Anniversary Remix” of “It’s All About Me,” accompanied by the Brian Friedman-directed choreography video. Come December, Mýa will ring in the 15th anniversary of her fifth album Sugar & Spice.

“I was a baby, I was a kid, everything was brand new. Working in the studio with Dru Hill for the first album was really like a family and a camp, so I had big brothers around me … I learned a lot from them, watching them,” she reflects. “It’s just a beautiful journey. I’m excited as well about what’s to come. I just love music, so it’s a blessing to just still be here 25 years later and still feel like it’s brand new.”

Watch *NSYNC Re-Create a Hilarious Group Photo: ‘Who Had Us Pose Like That?!’

As *NSYNC revisit their boy-band days ahead of the release of their first new song in more than 20 years, they have one question: “Who had us pose like that?!”

On Tuesday (Sept. 19), the quintet posted a new Instagram video with that caption, that shows the five bandmates casually entering a room together, soundtracked by Simple Plan’s 2002 song “I’m Just a Kid,” only to fall into a completely ridiculous group pose. We then flash to the original photo, taken in January 2001, which has every guy making an over-the-top facial expression without any context or explanation against a white backdrop.

Related

Justin Timberlake posted the video to his own account with the simple caption “Just kids.” Jersey Shore star Snooki shared her thoughts in the comments section, writing, “I’m calling 911 i can’t handle all of this.”

She’s not alone: Fans are freaking out over the prospect of getting the first new music from *NSYNC — Timberlake, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick — since 2002 when “Better Place” from Trolls Band Together arrives on Sept. 29. The guys kicked the fan frenzy into overdrive last week when they reunited on the MTV Video Music Awards stage to present Taylor Swift with the best pop award. The next day, “Better Place” was announced in a new trailer for the Trolls threequel, in which Timberlake returns to voice the troll Branch.

Ahead of next week’s song release, on Thursday, the group will appear on Hot Ones, the First We Feast online series that asks celebrities spicy questions as they eat progressively spicier chicken wings. Timberlake previously appeared on Hot Ones solo in April 2020, when he revealed that the FCC nearly pulled “Di– in a Box” from Saturday Night Live last-minute. Good thing they relented: The song, which Timberlake co-wrote with Katreese Barnes, Asa Taccone, Jorma Taccone, Andy Samberg and Akiva Schaffer, won a Primetime Emmy for outstanding music and lyrics.

Lauren Daigle Returns to No. 1 on Top Christian Albums: ‘I’ve Stored Up This Record in My Heart for Quite Some Time’

Singer-songwriter Lauren Daigle returns to No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart (dated Sept. 16) with her self-titled set, now available as a deluxe version that adds 13 tracks to the original 10-song album.

Lauren Daigle arrived atop the survey on the list dated May 27 with 25,000 equivalent album units, becoming her fourth leader. After the deluxe edition was released Sept. 8, the set (with both versions combined into one chart listing) rebounds 5-1 for its second week on top. It earned 13,000 equivalent album units (up 388%), with 8,000 in album sales, Sept. 8-14, according to Luminate. On the all-genre Billboard 200, it re-enters at No. 79, after it opened at its No. 21 high in May.

Related

The full LP, which pairs Daigle with producer Mike Elizondo for the first time, is her first through Atlantic Records, with which her longtime label, Centricity, formed a partnership in January 2022.

“It took every ounce of me not to explode the secret of a second half,” Daigle tells Billboard.  “I’ve treasured and stored up this record in my heart for quite some time. I had the privilege of creating with Mike Elizondo and a host of incredibly talented writers who made these songs come to life. Since May, the team has helped pave a way for this music to be heard and I am deeply grateful that people listened. I always say that moments like this take a village. Hats off to all.  Keep sharing the love and the music … it’s what makes this music world go around!”

Daigle had last released new music with Look Up Child, which opened at the Top Christian Albums apex in September 2018 and proceeded to ring up a record 102 frames at No. 1. It was bolstered by the crossover smash “You Say,” which dominated the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Christian Songs chart for an also unprecedented 132 weeks starting in July 2018.

The first single from Daigle’s eponymous LP, “Thank God I Do,” rules Hot Christian Songs survey for a 19th week, having become her sixth leader in May. It tallied 6.1 million in all-format airplay, 2.2 million streams and 1,000 downloads sold during the tracking week. It also leads Christian Digital Song Sales for a 23rd week. It topped Christian Airplay for a week in July, giving the Lafayette, La., native her fifth chart-topper (and reached the top 15 on both Adult Contemporary and Adult Pop Airplay).

The LP’s sophomore single, “These Are the Days,” pushes 24-23 for a new high on Christian Airplay (987,000, up 38%). On Hot Christian Songs, it hops 43-29, after hitting No. 21 in May.
