The Nine Best Moments From Taylor Swift’s First Night in Los Angeles on Her Eras Tour

At long last, Taylor Swift has arrived in Los Angeles for the final stop of her U.S. tour — or so fans thought.

Earlier on Thursday, August 3 — hours before the superstar would take the stage at SoFi Stadium — she announced a second leg of North American dates for 2024. The new dates include stops in Miami, New Orleans, Indianapolis and Toronto. “Turns out it’s NOT the end of an era,” Swift wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

And as she made perfectly clear on the first of her six-night run in L.A., slowing down is simply not in the cards. Neither is performing the same show night after night, as evidenced by the addition of two surprise songs to each set list, which Swift says is a fun way to challenge herself to dig deep into her extensive catalog — while also keeping fans on their toes, creating a sort of “gotta catch ’em all” energy.

But on Thursday, there was an even greater buzz radiating throughout the packed stadium as 70,000 fans poured in, many of whom were eagerly discussing rumors that Selena Gomez may make an appearance or that the next Taylor’s Version could be announced on this very night.

That’s the thing about the Eras Tour: it’s safe to expect the unexpected.

As it turns out, neither rumor was true. And yet, Swift’s opening night was nothing short of magical and filled with firsts, like having never performed at SoFi before or selecting a surprise song that she has never played live. And thankfully, it was all captured by a cameraman following her every move on stage, filming for something, as Swift managed to kick her power and poise into an even higher gear.

The night also included stellar opening sets from Gracie Abrams, who will join Swift on her 2024 dates, and HAIM. Of the sister trio, Swift said: “Not only are these three individuals my besties, but they’re my favorite band,” also noting it was a hometown show for the rockers.

“We have a lot to catch up on, musically speaking,” Swift said later on. “I haven’t toured in five years before the Eras Tour; This is the last city on the U.S. leg and we knew we wanted to end someplace special.”

And that is was. Below are the best moments from Swift’s opening night in L.A.

Billie Eilish Nabs No. 1 In Australia With ‘What Was I Made For?’

Billie Eilish is the new queen of Australia’s singles chart with “What Was I Made For?” (via Interscope/Universal), for her second leader.

Lifted from the soundtrack to Barbie, which, like elsewhere, is a monster hit at the Australian box office, “What Was I Made For?” climbs 2-1 on the ARIA Chart, published Aug. 4, for its first stint at the top.

The low-key number is the first single from Barbie to hit No. 1 on the Australian chart, and becomes the U.S. pop phenomenon’s 15th top 10 appearance, which includes a two-week run at the summit for “Bad Guy” in 2019.

“What Was I Made For?” dislodges Dave and Central Cee’s platinum-certified “Sprinter” (Virgin Music/Universal), down 2-1 on the latest survey, ending a seven-week streak at the peak, and is one of three Barbie singles in the top 5. They include Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua’s “Barbie World” (Atlantic/Warner), holding at No. 3, and Dua Lipa’s “Dance The Night” (Atlantic/Warner), which lifts 6-4. Meanwhile Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” (Geffen/Universal) continues to show bite, dipping 4-5.

Sinead O’Connor makes a posthumous return to the ARIA Chart with “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Originally a No. 1 hit for eight weeks back in 1990, when it finished the year as the best-selling single Down Under, “Nothing Compares 2 U” returns to the chart at No. 62, following the Irish singer’s death July 26 at age 56.

Over on the ARIA Albums Chart, Travis Scott takes the crown with Utopia (Epic/Sony). The followup to 2018’s Astroworld, Utopia propels 18 tracks onto the national singles survey this week, led by “Meltdown” at No. 6.

Utopia leads an all-new top two on the ARIA Chart, as Post Malone’s fifth and latest studio album, Austin (Universal), starts at No. 2. Posty, who toured Australia earlier in the year in support of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and is set for another solo visit later in 2023, previously hit No. 1 in 2018 with Beerbongs & Bentleys and again in 2019 with Hollywood’s Bleeding.

Meanwhile, Barbie: The Album (Atlantic/Warner), last week’s leader, slips 1-3.

King Stingray Wins Big at Australia’s 2023 AIR Awards

With three trophies, King Stingray was the big winner at the 2023 AIR Awards, held Thursday (April 3) at the Freemasons Hall Adelaide.

The Stingers, as they’re affectionately known in these parts, cleaned up with three of their four nominations, winning for best independent rock album or EP, independent album of the year (both for King Stingray) and breakthrough artist of the year.

The hattrick continues an impressive winning streak for the Yolŋu surf-rockers, who’ve already collected the 2023 Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition, and best song at the 2022 National Indigenous Music Awards (both for “Milkumana),” the Australian Music Prize, the Michael Gudinski breakthrough artist award, presented at the 2022 ARIA Awards, and best new artist at the 2022 Rolling Stone Australia Awards.

Meanwhile, the coveted independent song of the year went to Genesis Owusu, a multiple winner at last year’s AIR Awards, for “Get Inspired.”

Now in its 17th year, the AIR Awards are a celebration of the best and brightest from Australia’s independent music community.

Other winners on the night included former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns (best independent pop album or EP for FutureNever), Donny Benét (best independent jazz album or EP for Le Piano), Northlane (best independent heavy album for Obsidian), Confidence Man (best independent dance/electronica album or EP with TILT), and Cub Sport (best independent dance/electronica or club single with Always Got The Love).

Performers included Andy Golledge, Wanderers, Yours Truly and Jem Cassar-Daley.

The emotional moment of the night belonged to Dr. Catherine Crock and her work with the not-for-profile label Hush, which collected the outstanding achievement award. A quiet achiever, Crock established the award-winning label more than 20 years ago through the Hush Foundation, a charity that transforms healthcare through the healing power of music.

Hush now boasts 20-plus album releases featuring over 170 compositions, recorded by hundreds of homegrown artists and ensembles including Lior, Meg Washington, Missy Higgins, Kate Miller-Heidke, and many more. Addressing the audience from the podium, Crock explained that she’d begun the day, like so many others, in her surgery in Melbourne.

This year’s ceremony was once again bookended by the Indie-Con Australia conference, a gathering that focuses “on issues that are specifically relevant to the independent music sector,” say organizers, the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR). The South Australian Music Development Office is major sponsor for the annual awards.

Karol G Kicks Off Bichota Season at Lollapalooza 2023: 5 Best Moments From Her Set

In its more-than 30-year history, no Latin female artist had ever headlined Lollapalooza. That changed on Thursday, Aug. 3 when Colombian superstar Karol G closed out the festival performing a nearly two-hour set at the Bud Light stage. (J Balvin was the first Latino artist to headline in 2019.)

“Hey Chicago!” she said to a sea of fans exactly at 8:40 p.m. “Ay ay ay! How are we doing pues? We’re here to have a good time, yes or no? Trying with my English to say this is so amazing. Thank you for supporting Karol G. Let’s go!” Looking like the Bichota that she is wearing leopard-print bell-bottom pants and a Rolling Stones halter top, the woman of the hour — with her dramatically long pink hair and all — stepped foot onto her Mañana Será Bonito-inspired stage where flowers blossomed.

Karol G also blossomed into the superstar that she delivering anthem after anthem — powered by her all-women live band — in a setlist that spanned her albums KG0516 and Mañana Será Bonito. She kicked off with the empowering “TQG” and then went straight to the banger “Besties.” “Where are all my besties at?” she asked. Apparently, all her besties were in attendance and there to support their ruling Bichota.

Headlining the four-day Lollapalooza festival in Chicago — which this year is expected to have a daily capacity of 115,000 (compared to 100,000 in previous years) — is another milestone for the artist. Over the past years, Karol G hustled to cement herself as a leading force in Latin music. Last year, she made her Coachella debut on the main stage and also wrapped up 2022 with a record-breaking arena tour. After grossing $69.9 million and selling 410,000 tickets across 33 shows in North America, her $trip Love Tour became the highest-grossing U.S. tour by a female Latin act in history.

Furthermore, earlier this year, with Mañana Será Bonito, she became the first female artist to score an all-Spanish-language No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 – a landmark moment for women in Latin music. Her set at Lollapalooza served as a preview of what fans can expect at her first-ever stadium tour, which kicks off Aug. 11 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. That same day, she’s set to release her new album Mañana Será Bonito: Bichota Season.

Here are the best moments from Karol G’s history-making headlining set.

Halle Bailey Unveils Debut Solo Single ‘Angel’: Stream It Now

After conquering the seven seas as Princess Ariel in the live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Halle Bailey is ready to make her formal solo debut. “Angel,” the official debut solo single from Halle, has arrived. “Black girl with the Black girl hair,” she croons over a plaintive piano-backed arrangement.

Halle posted a teaser for “Angel” to her YouTube channel and social media on Monday (July 31). The short clip featured a montage of childhood home videos and clips of recent solo performances set to the track’s instrumental. The teaser closed with the quote, “Angels make a way somehow.”

While this is Halle’s formal solo debut, she lent her gorgeous voice to the soundtrack for The Little Mermaid (2023), which topped Top Soundtracks and peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard 200. She delivered a stunning rendition of the classic “Part of Your World,” which topped out at No. 19 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100, as well as the new original song “For the First Time,” which made Billboard’s ranking of the 50 best songs of 2023 so far.

As a member of the five-time Grammy-nominated R&B duo Chloe x Halle, Halle has earned earned two entries on the Billboard 200: 2018’s The Kids Are Alright (No. 139) and 2020’s Ungodly Hour (No. 16). The duo has also earned one entry on the Billboard Hot 100: “Do It” (No. 63), the lead single from Ungodly Hour.

2023 has been a banner year for Bailey. In addition to starring in The Little Mermaid, which grossed more than $118 million during its opening weekend, Bailey is also set to star in another movie musical later this year: Blitz Bazawule’s The Color Purple, which is scheduled to hit theaters on Christmas Day.

Doja Cat Launches New Single ‘Paint The Town Red’: Stream It Now

After kickstarting her new era with “Attention,” Doja Cat has unleashed her latest single: “Paint The Town Red.” The new single from the “Need to Know” rapper is available on all streaming and digital download platforms.

“B—h, I said what I said / I’d rather be famous instead / I let all that get to my head / I don’t care I paint the town red,” the Grammy-winner raps over a subtly brassy, finger snap-laden beat. The bouncy production provides an interesting contrast to the comparatively laid-back “Attention,” which peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 last month.

While the title of Doja’s upcoming fourth studio album is still a mystery, she has given fans a slew of clues about the aesthetic of her new record, from the blood-stained designs of her teaser videos to the horror vibes of the official music video for “Attention.” The new record will serve as the official full-length follow-up to Planet Her, Doja’s smash third studio album, which spawned a bevy of hits including “Kiss Me More” (with SZA), “Get Into It (Yuh),” and “You Right” (with The Weeknd).

In the time since her last studio album, the “Say So” rapper has remained musically active. Last year, she scored a top ten hit with “Vegas,” the lead single from the Elvis soundtrack, and she guested on a remix of SZA’s “Kill Bill,” which helped lift the song to its No. 1 peak on the Hot 100.

Doja Cat has earned 22 entries on the Hot 100, including “Need to Know” (No. 8), “Woman” (No. 7), and the No. 1-peaking “Say So” (with Nicki Minaj). On the Billboard 200, the cross-genre star has notched three entries: 2018’s Amala (No. 138), 2019’s Hot Pink (No. 9), and 2021’s Planet Her (No. 2).
