ARIA Awards 2023 Set For Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion

The 2023 ARIA Awards is locked in for Nov. 15, and will return to Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion.

Confirmed this week, it’s the ARIAs’ second successive year at the Hordern, a Sydney landmark with 100 years’ history and the site of countless concerts, from Frank Sinatra to Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, David Bowie, Queen and the Jackson Five.

From its grand opening in 1924 until 1983 (when the now demolished Sydney Entertainment Centre first opened its doors), the Hordern, with its 5,500-capacity, was the largest indoor venue in the country’s biggest city. Its reputation for hosting cracking concerts remains very much intact.

“Since 1987,” comments ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd, “the ARIA Awards have represented the pinnacle of achievement in Australian music. The incredible releases over the last 12 months prove there’s no shortage of world-class talent on our shores, and Nov. 15 is our opportunity to showcase a year of amazing Australian music to the world.”

The Australian recording industry’s flagship awards ceremony will premiere live on Stan for the first time (from 5pm local time). That live stream will be followed by a free-to-air feed from commercial TV broadcaster the Nine Network (from 7.30pm local time) with performances and moments available on-demand on the @ARIA.official YouTube channel.

The 2023 edition of the ARIAs marks the fifth year in partnership with streaming giant YouTube, an alliance which has reached some 29 million views. Last year’s awards captured more than 1.7 million views on the platform, according to YouTube, which will also live stream the red carpet globally.

“Sydney is already the centre of much of the recorded music industry, but we want to make music a bigger part of our state’s story,” comments John Graham, minister for the arts, minister for music and the night-time economy and minister for jobs and tourism. “I want to thank ARIA for their advocacy for the industry.”

More announcements on the 37th annual ARIA Awards, including nominations, will be announced “very soon,” organizers state.

The 2023 ARIA Awards event team is led by Roving Enterprises (production), and includes executive producer Craig Campbell and event producers Second Sunday. Twofold Media handles PR and red carpet, and White Noise Agency is tasked with sponsorship.

Hozier Lands First U.K. No. 1 With ‘Unreal Unearth’

Hozier enjoys an unreal start on the U.K. albums chart as his third studio album blasts to No. 1.

Unreal Unearth (via Island) debuts atop the Official U.K. Albums Chart, published Aug. 25, for the Irish singer and songwriter’s first leader.

The leader at the midweek stage and best-seller on vinyl across the latest full-week chart cycle, Unreal Unearth eclipses the No. 3 of Hozier’s self-titled debut from 2014, and the No. 6 best for his sophomore album from 2019, Wasteland, Baby.

Hozier (real name: Andrew Hozier-Byrne) holds off the Weeknd’s hits package The Highlights (up 6-2 via Republic Records/XO) and Taylor Swift’s Midnights (up 7-3 via EMI), respectively. Midnights is one of three Swift LPs in the top ten (1989 holds at No. 5 and Lover lifts 11-7).

Also new to the latest albums survey is the View’s Exorcism of Youth (Cooking Vinyl), the Scottish indie-rock outfit’s sixth studio album.

Exorcism becomes the band’s fourth U.K. top 10 album, and highest chart position since their 2009 sophomore album Which Bitch, which peaked at No. 3. The View’s career got off to a hot star with debut Hats Off to the Buskers hitting No. 1 back in 2007. That LP featured the View’s first and only U.K. top 10 single, “Same Jeans,” which reached No. 3 in the year of release.

Meanwhile, U.S. singer and actor Renee Rapp earns her first U.K. top 10 with Snow Angel (Interscope), which flies in at No. 7.

And finally, U.K. singer and songwriter Birdy flaps her wings for a fifth U.K. top 40 appearance with Portraits (via Warner Music U.K.), new at No. 13. Birdy (real name: Jasmine Lucilla Elizabeth Jennifer van den Bogaerde) previously charted with her self-titled 2011 debut (No. 13 peak), 2013’s Fire Within (No. 8), 2016’s Beautiful Lies (No. 4) and 2021’s Young Heart (No. 4).

Meghan Trainor, Jonas Brothers Among Winners at 2023 Streamy Awards

Pop artists Meghan Trainor and the Jonas Brothers joined the winners’ circle Sunday (Aug. 27) at the 2023 Streamy Awards, which this year celebrated the past, present, and future of Internet culture.

“All About That Bass” singer Trainor was, for the first time, named as the Rolling Stone sound of the year winner. As she collected the award, Trainor delivered a sweet acceptance speech, during which she gave a shout-out to her kids, including her newborn baby.

Trainor won for “Made You Look,” in recognition of the song’s unparalleled impact on content creation across social media and its “resonance within popular culture,” reps say.

“Made You Look” last year peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart. Her son Riley helped grow the song’s profile on social media, including TikTok, where the track had been prominent throughout its charts run run. Taken from Trainor’s album Takin It Back, “Made You Look” was announced just after Trainor shared with the world the good news of her pregnancy with a second child.

Also at the Streamys, the brothers Kevin, Jon and Nick Jonas won the crossover category.

Performers on the night included viral hip-hop artist Armani White, who performed a medley of “Billie Eilish” and “Silver Tooth”; and Swedish dance-pop duo Icona Pop, who performed their 2012 punk-channeling smash “I Love It” along with new single “Fall In Love”.

Multiple winners at the Streamys included Fanum (breakout streamer, lifestyle); Kai Cenat (streamer of the year, lifestyle), MrBeast (creator of the year, collaboration) and Vivienne Medrano (animated, Streamys creator honor).

Produced by Dick Clark Productions and Tubefilter, and held in in Los Angeles, the Streamy Awards celebrate content creators across beauty, comedy, food, gaming, music, podcasts and sports, and was hosted by MatPat, a seven-time winner.

DCP is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a Penske Media Corporation (PMC) subsidiary and joint venture between PMC and Eldridge. PMC is the parent company of Billboard.

Dua Lipa Shimmies to U.K. No. 1 With ‘Dance The Night’

Thirteen is the lucky number for Dua Lipa as “Dance The Night” (via Warner Records) completes its coronation on the Official U.K. Singles Chart.

Lifted from the Barbie soundtrack, “Dance The Night” rises 2-1 for its first stint at the summit, doing so in its 13th week on the national tally, published Friday, Aug. 25.

With that effort, Lipa becomes just the sixth British female solo artist to bag four leaders, drawing level with Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora and Spice Girl Geri Halliwell. Only Jess Glynne (seven) and Girls Aloud’s Cheryl (five) have more No. 1s, the Official Charts Company reports.

Lipa previously led with 2017’s “New Rules,” 2018’s “One Kiss” with Calvin Harris, and 2021’s “Cold Heart” with Elton John and Australian electronic production outfit Pnau.

The last British female artist to reign over the U.K. singles chart was Kate Bush, with her 1985 classic “Running Up That Hill,” which exploded off the back of Stranger Things season four.

“Dance The Night” replaces another hit from Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made” (Interscope/Atlantic) which dips 1-2. The podium is completed by Olivia Rodrigo‘s “Vampire” (Interscope), unchanged at No. 3.

Meanwhile, Doja Cat makes an impressive leap on the chart with “Paint The Town Red” (RCA), up 15-4 for a new high. “Paint The Town Red” is the new No. 1 in Australia.

Continuing the Girl Powered look of the U.K. singles chart in recent weeks, female artists lead the top seven tracks, and eight of the top ten.

There’s a notable entry for Oliver Anthony Music‘s divisive Billboard Hot 100 leader “Rich Men North of Richmond,” which cracks the U.K. top 40 for the first time. The independently-released country music hit single is up 64-23 on the Official Chart.

Finally, the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on the Disney+ streaming platform has a measurable impact on the Official U.K. Singles Chart as Florence + The Machine’s “Dog Days” (Island), which appears on the Marvel franchise’s soundtrack, re-enters the top 40. “Dog Days” drops in at No. 27, not far from its peak position of No. 21.

Florence Welch Reveals She Had Emergency Surgery: ‘It Saved My Life’

Florence Welch, the lead vocalist of Florence + The Machine, has shared that she has undergone life-saving, emergency surgery. The news comes after the band canceled its festival appearances that were scheduled for this weekend.

“I’m so sorry that I had to cancel the last couple of shows. My feet are fine, I had to have emergency surgery for reasons I don’t really feel strong enough to go into yet, but it saved my life,” Welch wrote on Sunday (Aug. 27) in an update posted on Instagram.

She told fans, “And I will be back to close out the Dance Fever tour in Lisbon and Malaga. (Maybe not jumping so much but you can do that for me.)”

“Suffice to say I wish the songs were less accurate in their predictions,” said Welch. “But creativity is a way of coping, mythology is a way of making sense. And the dark fairytale of Dance Fever, with all its strange prophecies, will provide me with much needed strength and catharsis right now.”

Florence + The Machine had called off an Aug. 25 performance at Zurich Openair and an Aug. 26 performance at Rock en Seine due to medical advice, the band previously announced to fans.

The group unfortunately also had to cancel tour dates last fall, when Welch broke her foot and was told not to perform in order to prevent further damage.

See her latest note below. Florence + The Machine’s most recent album, Dance Fever, was released in May.

Bad Bunny Shares Steamy Shirtless Selfie and More Recent Photos

“Benito” was trending all over social media after Bad Bunny shared several personal photos on Sunday (Aug. 27). The picture that had most people talking? A selfie in which the Puerto Rican star bares almost everything.

In the pic, Bad Bunny has a cell phone blocking his face, but his bare chest, arms, abs and even part of his groin are on display. The mirror selfie as posted is dark and shadowy — more of a silhouette of Benito — but little was left to the imagination when fans started lightening the image and reposting it.

Bad Bunny’s photo dump on Instagram Stories also included shirtless workout and baseball-playing pictures and snapshots from a trip out in nature. There’s a clip of someone, whose voice some are guessing is Kendall Jenner’s, chasing a squirrel.

The Un Verano Sin Ti hitmaker has reportedly been dating Jenner since early this year, with their relationship heating up in the spring.

Related

The pair looked cozy in April while at Coachella together, and in May, they were seen sitting courtside at a Lakers game together. Earlier this month, Bad Bunny and Jenner were captured on video in full couple mode at a Drake concert in Los Angeles.
