Jason Aldean Relates ‘Try That in a Small Town’ to Boston Marathon Bombing at MA Concert

Jason Aldean connected his controversial song “Try That in a Small Town” to the Boston Marathon bombing during his concert at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Mass., on Saturday (July 29).

Prior to performing the song at his Highway Desperado Tour stop near Beantown, the 46-year-old country star thanked fans for their support following the backlash surrounding the track and its corresponding music video, and related the song to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and injured hundreds.

Related

“I was laying in bed last night and thinking to myself, you guys would get this better than anybody, right?” Aldean began. “Because I remember a time, I think it was April of 2013, when the Boston Marathon bombings happened. You guys remember this, right? What I saw when that happened was, not a small town — a big a– town — come together. The whole country, especially Boston, came together to find these two pr—- that did that. Any of you guys that would’ve found those guys before the cops did, I know you guys from Boston, and you guys would’ve beat the s— out of [them].”

In mid-July, the singer responded to claims that “Try That in a Small Town” is a “modern lynching song.” The track challenges those who “pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store” or “cuss out a cop” to, as the title suggests, try those actions in a small town and “see how far ya make it down the road.” The song’s music video features footage of an American flag burning, protesters having confrontations with police, looters breaking a display case, and thieves robbing a convenience store.

Last week, the “Try That in a Small Town” video was seemingly edited to remove imagery of a Black Lives Matter protest after the clip received backlash. The video is now six seconds shorter than when it was originally shared on July 14, according to The Washington Post. There is no longer a clip from Fox 5 Atlanta depicting violent interactions during Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020.

During Saturday’s show, Aldean reiterated that the song is “not about race. It’s about people getting their s— together, acting right. You’re hearing from the person that made the record. Everybody is trying to tell you what I meant. They don’t know what I meant.”

“We are a country, the greatest one in the world. I know you guys are like me. You want to be able to send your kids to school and not have to worry about something happening while they’re at school,” he added. “To me, that’s not a racial issue. I don’t give a s— what color you are. If you’re acting out, burning down buildings, costing taxpayers all this money, just for you to go and show that you’re pissed off, to me I just don’t get that. We’re just never going to see eye to eye about that s—.”

CMT pulled the video from its rotation after running it for three days, while Aldean’s wife, Brittany Aldean, came to his defense. Music stars like Sheryl Crow and Margo Price have spoken out against his choice to perform and release the song.

Sales and streaming surges catapulted “Try That in a Small Town” to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, dated July 29. The song, released in May, scored the biggest sales week for a country song in more than 10 years, according to Luminate.

Aldean ended his speech at Mansfield’s Xfinity Center by sharing his appreciation to fans for their continued support.

“You guys saw what was trying to happen here the last couple of weeks. A lot of people wanted nothing more than for this song to be something that it wasn’t, wanted you guys to turn on me and think that I was something that I wasn’t,” he said. “It makes me very proud, the fact that all you guys can see that and go, ‘Nuh-uh, not this time.’ You guys took this song and the video and you guys have made this thing one of the biggest things I’ve ever had in my career. Thank you guys for hearing the song, seeing the video, watching it with an open mind, seeing what it was about.”

Cardi B Throws Mic at Concertgoer Who Splashed Drink at Her Onstage

Cardi B got even with a concertgoer who tossed a drink at her during the rapper’s performance in Las Vegas on Saturday (July 29).

In a video circulating on social media, the 30-year-old hip-hop star is seen hurling a microphone at an unruly audience member after they splashed their beverage on her during a performance at Drai’s Beachclub.

Cardi was in the middle of delivering her hit song “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” — which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2017 — when the incident occurred. Afterwards, she retweeted a video of what went down. In the clip, the rapper seems surprised after being splashed by the liquid from the cup, but then turns angry and throws the mic at them while appearing to yell.

Cardi teamed up with her husband Offset on his new song “Jealousy,” which dropped Friday (July 28). The Migos rapper’s latest track sees him alongside Cardi dodging haters in a major kiss-off. “You offended when I be on defense/ They’re too worried ’bout me and my n—a/ You should worry ’bout the n—a yours sleep with, hmm,” she raps.

Cardi is the latest victim of a dangerous trend in which artists are being struck by objects while performing at concerts. In recent weeks, Drake called out a fan for throwing a vape on stage; Bebe Rexha was injured when a cell phone was hurled at her face; a fan tossed her dead mother’s ashes up onto P!nk’s stage; Kelsea Ballerini was struck by an object mid-song; someone sent a sex toy flying at Lil Nas X; and a mysterious object pelted Harry Styles near the eye and left him wincing in pain.

Taylor Swift Delivers Live Debut of ‘Right Where You Left Me’ With Aaron Dessner at Santa Clara Concert

Taylor Swift teamed up with her frequent collaborator Aaron Dessner for the first live performance of “Right Where You Left Me” in Santa Clara, Calif., on Friday (July 28).

The live debut of the 2020 Evermore bonus track, which was co-written by The National frontman, arrived during the surprise songs portion of the pop superstar’s set at Levi’s Stadium. Prior to the performance, Swift warned Eras Tour concert-goers that it was one of her more challenging songs to play live.

Related

“Because it’s one of our favorites, there’s more pressure on it,” Swift told the crowd. “Also, this is one of the wordiest songs. I have been rehearsing this for weeks, OK? And I’ve never, ever gotten it 100% right. Not even one time. If this is the time that I get it right, you have no idea what kind of celebration I’m going to be exhibiting after that. And also, this goes for you. If you can get all the words right to this song, you get to pat yourself on the back. You win an imaginary prize. It’s yours. We love this song and I hope that I somewhat do it justice.”

As expected, the songstress goofed up the lyrics before laughing it off and starting again where they left off. “It was too good to be true!” she said. “I knew that I would f— that up! We really can’t let that be it, so now we’ve got to go back.”

This isn’t the first time Dessner has appeared with Swift during the Eras Tour. The singer-songwriter has also popped up in several cities for onstage collaborations of “The Great War,” “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve,” “Seven” and “Ivy.”

Swift’s second surprise song of Friday evening was the first live performance of “Castles Crumbling,” from her recently released album, Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The studio version of the track features Paramore‘s Hayley Williams, but Swift delivered the track solo on piano.

The North American leg of the Eras Tour will continue in Santa Clara on Saturday (July 29) and close with six shows at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium (Aug. 3-5 and 7-9).

Bia Talks Working With ‘Legendary’ Timbaland & Busta Rhymes: ‘It’s Literally So Surreal’

Bia‘s career is just getting started. Despite having two albums under her belt — 2020’s For Certain and this year’s Really Her — she’s already had some major veterans in rap taking notice, something that she says is “surreal” to experience.

The rapper worked with Timbaland on recent single “I’m That Bitch” and Busta Rhymes on last month’s “Beach Ball,” and spoke about both collaboration on the lastest installment of Billboard News.

“Timbaland is so legendary, like he dropped so many gems and to just be in the same room with someone like that who has that type of catalog, you can just learn from them,” she said. “Aaliyah is actually one of my favorite artists of all time, so to even be in the room with him, just to see what he thinks of my music. I got to play him my album and he loved it. It’s literally so surreal, all of the people I look up to the most always embrace me, show me so much love and helped me become the artist I am today. I feel blessed to be here.”

As for the collaboration with Busta, Bia revealed that she was approached with the opportunity because he specifically had her in mind for the guest spot. “Me and Busta did this song months ago, he called me up, he’s like ‘Listen Bia, I’ve got this song. You gotta do this part. It’s only your voice that’s gotta this part,’ so I went to studio right away, I did it. And to perform with Busta during Hip-Hop 50…this is crazy. It’s unreal.”

Following the release of “I’m That Bitch,” the track hit the top 40 on Billboard‘s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, peaking at No. 27. The song spent a total of 90 weeks on the chart.

Mandy Moore Reveals Son Gus Has Rare Skin Condition Called Gianotti Crosti Syndrome

Mandy Moore revealed that one of her sons is having an issue with his health. On Friday (July 28), the “Candy” singer took to her Instagram Stories to share a photo of her two-year-old son Gus with a red rash on his body, along with some insight on his recently diagnosed condition.

“This sweet boy woke up with a crazy rash on Saturday am. We thought maybe an eczema flare? Poison oak? Allergy,” she captioned the photo. “We tried to deduce what it could be and did anything to help him find relief from the itch. Went to urgent care. Pediatrician. Dermatologist. pediatric dermatologist. All the while, he smiles and carries on with his day like the rockstar he is.”

She continued, “Turns out it’s a viral childhood rash that just spontaneously appears called Gianotti-Crosti syndrome. It sometimes accompanies a cold but not in Gus’ case. It’s all over his legs and feed and the backs of his arms but nowhere else. There’s nothing to do but a steroid cream and Benadryl at night. And it could last 6-8 weeks.”

According to the National Institute of Health, Gianotti Crosti syndrome is “a rare childhood skin condition characterized by a papular rash with blisters on the skin of the legs, buttocks, and arms.” The condition results in skin lesions that last a minimum of 10 days to several weeks, as described by Moore.

“This parenting thing is weird and hard and sometimes you feel so helpless (and yes I’m ever so grateful it’s only an itchy skin condition). Kids are resilient and as long as he’s smiling through it, we are a-okay,” the This Is Us actress concluded her Stories post.

Moore shares her two sons with Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith — the pair tied the knot in 2018. Gus, whose name is August “Gus” Harrison, on Feb. 20, 2021. The couple’s youngest child, Oscar “Ozzie” Bennett Goldsmith, was born in October 2022.

Jimmie Allen Has a Comedy Special in the Works

Jimmie Allen recently announced he will launch a three-date “I Said What I Said” comedy tour in October, and a rep for Allen tells Billboard that the shows will be filmed to put together a digital comedy special, which will be made available on his website at a later date.

No venues or specific dates for the I Said What I Said tour have been released at this time. Each of the trio of shows are invite-only, and Allen encouraged his followers to sign up via email to learn how to win tickets to the show.

The rep notes that though Allen is prepping for the comedy tour, he will continue making music and touring. The comedy tour and special mark the latest creative venture from Allen, who used to do stand-up comedy in high school and college. He also authored the children’s book My Voice is a Trumpet, and crafted the theme song for the Netflix series Titletown High.

The plans for a comedy tour and comedy special come amid sexual assault allegations that have been brought against Allen. In May, a Jane Doe filed a civil suit in Tennessee federal court against the country singer, claiming that he raped and sexually harassed her while she was a member of his management team. The case was filed by attorney Elizabeth Fegan, who has previously represented victims of Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein, as well as Dr. George Tyndall, a campus gynecologist at the University of Southern California, who was accused of sexually abusing patients. Allen responded with a statement saying that he and the Jane Doe accuser had a sexual relationship, but denied the rape and sexual assault allegations, saying that they “have no truth to them whatsoever.”

A second unnamed accuser later filed a suit against Allen, claiming the singer-songwriter assaulted her in a Las Vegas hotel room and filmed the encounter without permission. Earlier this month, Allen countersued both accusers, claiming that the first accuser defamed him, while the second accuser illegally took his cell phone.

Grupo Firme & Pipe Bueno, Plus More: What’s Your Favorite New Latin Music Release? Vote!

This week, our New Music Latin roundup — a compilation of the best new Latin songs, albums, and videos recommended by Billboard Latin and Billboard Español editors — is powered by new music from Darell, Grupo Firme, and Kany García, to name a few.

The weekly playlist kicks off with Darell’s 18-track album Everybody Go To The Discotek, named after his signature catchphrase. The set is specifically designed to dance and have a great time at the club, but also showcases the Puerto Rican artist’s musical versatility. In the set, Darell experiments with Brazilian funk (“Funka”), Dominican dembow (“Rulay”), and a merengue-bachata fusion (“Lollipop”).

From urban music, our recommendations navigate to a powerful ballad helmed by Kany García and Carin Leon. The requinto-driven melody tells the story of a couple who’s better off after a toxic relationship. “This love was too big for you/and you would say that I couldn’t live without you/and now you’re looking for any reason to talk about me/oh love, you still have that urge to hurt my heart,” says part of the track.

Banda music does not stay behind either as Grupo Firme reeled in Pipe Bueno for their latest track “Entre Botellas.” Penned by Firme group members Eduin Caz and Abraham Hernández, the new heartbreak anthem is about two friends who are catching up over drinks, and discover they have both fallen for the same woman.

Other notable releases this week include music from Caloncho, Jhayco, Blessd, Ivan Cornejo and many more.

Last week, Ryan Castro and Peso Pluma’s “QUEMA” won the reader poll with over 39 percent of the votes. They were closely followed by Myriam Hernández’s “Nos Lo Hemos Dicho Todo” with more than 32 percent of the votes.

Who should win this week? Vote below!
