8 Must-Hear New Country Songs: Jelly Roll, Tyler Childers, Carter Faith & More

In this week’s new crop of musical contenders, Jelly Roll teams with Apple Music to give an older demo track new life. Meanwhile, Tyler Childers and Silas House team to release a stirring music video (and new song from Childers) that highlights unyielding love.

Jelly Roll, “Dragging These Roots”

Over his past rap and country projects, Jelly Roll has only grown more adept at crafting and vocally unfurling songs with dynamic melodies and dramatic rock fluency, as on his latest, “Need a Favor.”

Here, he takes a song written by Jesse Frasure, Josh Thompson and Ben Hayslip, about never being fully capable nor inclined to shuffle off one’s native outset, and fuels it with his growling, agile vocals. Jelly Roll teamed with Apple Music to record this previously unreleased track as part of Apple Music’s Lost & Found project.

Tyler Childers, “In Your Love”

This stirring song, written by Childers with Gino Seale, is accompanied by a gripping, tender and essential music video (with the video treatment written by journalist/novelist Silas House). The clip highlights the love story of two men, Jasper and Matthew, who escape work in the coal mines in 1950s Appalachia — and the violence and discrimination of their co-workers — to build their life together on a farm deep in the country.

The beautifully-shot video depicts the love, passion, joy and sorrows the couple experiences– from having dinner with friends to enjoying a concert– but also the discrimination and fear that threads through their time together. “In Your Love” offers a rich look at the complete arc of the couple’s relationship, and a romance that lingers long after Matthew passes away from black lung, due to his work in the coal mines.

The song is the first glimpse into Childers’ upcoming album Rustin’ in the Rain.

The Oak Ridge Boys and Alabama, “Jesus and John Wayne”

For the first time, these two Country Music Hall of Fame-inducted groups (the Oaks in 2015; Alabama in 2005) team up for a vocal collaboration that pays tribute to gospel songwriting duo, Bill and Gloria Gaither. The song, previously recorded by the Gaither Vocal Band, was written by Bill and Gloria as well as Benjamin Gaither and Kim Williams, and pays tribute to the influence of both a hard-driving, uncompromising father and a soft-hearted mother. Sonically, this fiddle-drenched track is reminiscent of Alabama’s 1980s country sounds, though the lyrics fail to rise above country/gospel tropes. However, the song reaches its zenith when the music momentarily quiets, leaving the two iconic vocal groups to blend their signature harmonies.

Parker Ryan, “First on My List”

This Texas native issued his debut project, Talbert Street, Pt. 1, in 2020, followed by Pt. 2, and a eponymous project. His recently released three-song project includes “First on My List,” an amalgam of airy folk, country and bluesy-rock tones. Here, over a swirl of hypnotic acoustic guitar, he sings of spending his days piling up miles, money and vacation time in pursuit of dreams. “Maybe part of me wishes you would fix up all my feelings/ Help me with my healing,” he contemplates, before doubling down on where his commitment lies. A chorus of voices joins as the song ascends to its close, as he reconfirms that the relationship remains his priority.

Carter Faith, ‘Cowboy Forever”

Singer-songwriter Faith previously issued her debut EP Let Love Be Love. On her latest, Spanish guitar flourishes, a cinematic Western vibe and Faith’s unique, sultry twang meld to convey this tale of a young woman who falls for a headstrong, restless cowboy. “I was dreaming of his cattle ranch/ His grandmother’s diamond on my left hand,” she muses, later calling herself a “lovesick fool.” Masterful use of Faith’s airy falsetto lends to the song’s freewheeling-yet-wounded mystique. Faith wrote this song with Lauren Hungate and Tofer Brown.

Mitchell Tenpenny, “Bigger Mistakes”

“At the End of a Bar” hitmaker Tenpenny adds to post-breakup misery in this pop-punk-tinged track, telling his ex-lover, “I’ve made bigger mistakes than you.” On the surface, it’s a searing insult, but embedded in the lyrics is his realization that a breakup isn’t the end of the world. He reserves those weightier, more haunting self-recriminations for failing to have a drink with his good friend (and fellow country singer), the late Joe Diffie, before Diffie’s passing in 2020, or failing to put a ring on the finger of a different ex, whom he calls “the one who got away,” years ago. Tenpenny’s gravelly voice is all remorse and swagger here, to great effect.

Cooper Alan, “Never Not Remember You”

Alan has become a TikTok sensation thanks to songs including “New Normal” and “Colt 45 (Country Remix).” His latest, a ballad about remembering the sweeter moments after a loved one’s passing, is somewhat of a throwback — no hip-hop leanings, no angst-fueled rock shadings — just a straightforward song that swells with piano and strings, and one that highlights Alan as an elegant-voiced crooner with a hint of twang. Alan also further proves his growth as a songwriter as a co-writer on the track, alongside hitmaking writers Victoria Shaw (“The River”) and Seth Mosley (“Fix My Eyes,” “Joy”).

Drake Milligan and the Reklaws, “Honky Tonkin’ About”

Texas native Milligan teams with duo The Reklaws for this hard-charging, rousing track. The song centers on a guy questioning a potential lover’s country bona fides (“Was there dust on your driveway … did your daddy drive a tractor?”), before deciding that no matter her origin story, he’s ready to see where the evening takes them. Milligan’s hearty voice is as commanding as ever, even on this more lighthearted outing. The song comes courtesy of writers Blake Redferrin, Thomas Salter, Callum Maudsley and The Reklaws’ Stuart Walker.

Paul McCartney Teases Major International Tour: ‘Got to Get You Into My Life’

Paul McCartney appears to be laying the groundwork for another global tour.

The evergreen Beatle posted a cryptic message to his social channels over the weekend, encouraging fans to sign up for his mailing list with the promise of “news coming soon.”

“Got to get you into my life!” reads the post, a nod to the Revolver-era classic.

That same message, set against a blue sky with white clouds, over the sound of an old-school radio set tuning into a station, is reposted on the official channels for Frontier Touring, the Australian concerts giant.

Founded by the late Michael Gudinski, Frontier Touring produced McCartney’s 2017 stadium tour of Australia and New Zealand, his first in these parts in almost a quarter century.

The 81-year-old, two-time Rock And Roll Hall of Famer is showing no signs of slowing down.

Following the release of Peter Jackson’s three-part 2021 documentary series The Beatles: Get Back, McCartney hit the road for his Got Back Tour, which last year nudged his total career gross north of the $1 billion mark, making him one of just 11 artists to surpass the 10-digit mark in Boxscore’s 30-year-plus history.

There’s more music on the way. McCartney explained in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today, airing June 13, that the “final Beatles record” will be released later in 2023, and that artificial intelligence would be used to separate vocal tracks from background noise and instruments.

When his comments drew strong reactions from both sides of the AI debate, the Liverpool legend clarified his comments by way of a social update.

“Can’t say too much at this stage but to be clear, nothing has been artificially or synthetically created,” he wrote June 22. “It’s all real and we all play on it. We cleaned up some existing recordings – a process which has gone on for years.”

He continued, “No one is more excited than us to be sharing something with you later in the year. We hope you love it as much as we do.”

On the solo recording front, his McCartney III LP arrived in December 2020, arriving at No. 1 in the U.K., and on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart and Top Rock Albums tally, and No. 2 on the all-genres Billboard 200.

Its predecessor, Egypt Station debuted at No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart in September 2018, for as his first leader in the U.S. in 36 years.

‘Barbie: The Album’ Sets U.K. Chart Record

It’s official: Barbie is slaying at the box office, and she’s also smashing the music charts.

Barbie: The Album (via Atlantic) leads the U.K.’s compilations chart and three tracks from it climb into the national singles chart top 5 — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For” (up 10-3 on a 71% week-on-week gain in chart sales, via Interscope), Dua Lipa’s “Dance The Night” (up 15-4 on a 86% lift in chart sales, via Warner Records) and Nicki MinajIce Spice and Aqua‘s “Barbie World” (up 20-5 with a 115% boost in chart sales, via Atlantic/Capitol/Republic).

Until now, no film soundtrack has simultaneously landed three top 5 singles in the U.K.

The first film soundtrack to bag three simultaneous U.K. top 10s was 1978’s Saturday Night Fever (“Night Fever,” “If I Can’t Have You,” “More Than A Woman”), and the Grease soundtrack from the same year launched three top 10 hits (“Summer Nights,” “Grease,” “Hopelessly Devoted To You”).

Disney’s Encanto from 2022 became the first animated film soundtrack to claim three simultaneous top 10s (“We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” “Surface Pressure” and “The Family Madrigal”).

It’s a good week for Aqua, with not one but two top 40 appearances. Powered by the popular Margot Robbie-starring film, “Barbie World,” which interpolates Aqua’s one-time U.K. No. 1 “Barbie Girl,” gives the Norwegian pop outfit their first U.K. top 5 spot in 25 years, since 1998’s “Turn Back Time,” the Official Charts Company reports. It’s Aqua’s sixth U.K. top 10 appearance, Minaj’s 15th and Ice Spice’s first.

“Barbie Girl,” meanwhile, reenters the top 40 for the first time in 25 years, at No. 40, with a 91% week-on-week uplift in combined sales, according to the OCC. The kitsch classic from 1997 is a member of the U.K.’s million-seller club, coming in at No. 16 on the all-time list.

Barbie playtime doesn’t end there; a total of six entries from the soundtrack appear in the U.K. top 40, published Friday, July 28, including cuts by Charli XCX, “Ken” actor Ryan Gosling, and Lizzo.

Barbie: The Album is the current No. 1 in Australia, where it becomes the first soundtrack since Encanto to lead the ARIA Chart.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie movie has raked in $774.5 million at the global box office in just 12 days.

At the top of the singles chart mountain in the U.K. is Dave and Central Cee’s “Sprinter” (Live Yours/Neighbourhood), which wins the chart race for an eighth consecutive week, ahead of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” (Geffen), which holds at No. 2.

Blur Breezes to No. 1 In U.K. With ‘The Ballad of Darren’

Blur is back on top in the U.K. as The Ballad of Darren arrives at No. 1, for the Britpop legends’ seventh leader.

The Ballad of Darren (via Parlophone) opens with 44,000 chart units, the Official Charts Company reports, with physical formats proving popular. Almost 90% of those first-week units were sold as physical copies.

That Blur would crown the chart on Friday, July 28 was virtually assured when, at the midweek point, the album was reported to be outselling the rest of the top 10 combined.

The foursome, which also includes guitarist Graham Coxon, bass player Alex James and drummer Dave Rowntree, also hit No. 1 with Parklife (1994), The Great Escape (1995), Blur (1997), 13 (1999), and Think Tank (2003) and The Magic Whip (2015), while their first two albums, 1991’s Leisure and 1993’s Modern Life is Rubbish, reached No. 7 and No. 15, respectively.

With seven albums chart crowns, Blur joins the likes of Elton John, George Michael, Paul McCartney and Barbra Streisand, and they’re just one title short of the eight leaders accumulated by Oasis, Blur’s ‘90s nemesis. Oasis’ string of leaders does, however, including a greatest hits collection, 2010’s Time Flies – 1994-2009.

For frontman Damon Albarn, a second No. 1 of the year after his other band, Gorillaz, reigned over the Official U.K. Albums Chart in March with Cracker Island, a feat that places him in rare company. The likes of ABBA, Taylor Swift, The Beatles, Diana Ross and Robbie Williams have also landed two chart-toppers in a calendar year.

Meanwhile, American rockers Greta Van Fleet snag a second top 10 album with Starcatcher (EMI), new at No. 8. That’s an equal career high, matching the No. 8 best for 2021’s The Battle at Garden’s Gate, and beating the No. 12 peak for their 2018 debut Anthem of a Peaceful Army.

Finally, As December Falls enjoys its first appearance on the U.K. chart with Join The Club (ADF), new at No. 11, while K-pop girl group NewJeans land at No. 15 with their second EP Get Up.

Foo Fighters & Alanis Morissette Pay Tribute to Sinead O’Connor With ‘Mandinka’ Cover

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl welcomed Alanis Morissette to the band’s stage this weekend at the 2023 Fuji Rock Festival at Japan’s Naeba Ski Resort. Together, they honored the late Sinead O’Connor with a live cover of “Mandinka,” which was an early single of O’Connor’s from her debut album, The Lion and the Cobra.

“Tonight we’re gonna do something that we’ve never done before with someone that we love very much,” Grohl told the crowd. “We want an old friend to come up and sing with us tonight for a very special reason.”

He introduced Morissette — who was also on the July 28-30 fest’s lineup — and gave her a hug when she joined the band on stage.

Morissette then dedicated their version of “Mandinka” to “a beautiful woman with high intelligence and deep empathy, way ahead of her time, who is no longer with us. This is for her.”

O’Connor died at age 56. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” her family said in a statement to the BBC on July 26.

Morissette was one of countless music artists to post condolences and share memories of the singer upon hearing the news of her death.

“Sinead was a profound inspiration to many,” she wrote in an Instagram Story. “And to me. Her passion, poetry, and unapologetic expression raised the bar on artistry and female empowerment. Her questioning of societal norms deeply influenced culture’s appreciation of female complexity. Her ability to vulnerably dwell on the small part of the bell-shaped curve was thought provoking, stirring and inspiring. I’m feeling empathy for Ireland, for the world, and for all of us who are saddened by this news.”

Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson & Samara Joy Celebrate Quincy Jones’ 90th Birthday at the Hollywood Bowl

“Q, this is for you!” proclaimed singer Patti Austin in kicking off the second of a two-night celebration of Quincy Jones’ 90th birthday at the Hollywood Bowl (July 28-29). The two-and-a-half-hour tribute delivered a power-packed sampling of the music icon’s multifaceted, illustrious career as an artist, producer, arranger and conductor.

Jones’ goddaughter Austin, Stevie Wonder and acclaimed newcomer Samara Joy were among the artists who lifted their divine voices in tribute. Backing them were core members of Jones’ longtime house band over the years, including music director/keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, guitarist Paul Jackson Jr. and bassist Nathan East, alongside the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra led by conductor Jules Buckley.

And while Jones, born Quincy Delight Jones on March 14, 1933, wasn’t in attendance, there’s no doubt he felt the good vibrations emanating from the Bowl. Here are five memorable moments from Saturday night’s (July 29) performance:

A Wonder-Full Time: Reprising his surprise celebration appearance from the night before, Wonder joined Austin onstage for a memory-evoking rendition of “Betcha’ Wouldn’t Hurt Me” — a song the latter guested on originally for Jones’ 1981 album The Dude. After that, Wonder took an elated Bowl audience back to one of his classic albums, 1972’s Talking Book, with the song “You’ve Got It Bad Girl.” Before that, Wonder shared with the audience that he’d first met Jones when he was a 14-year-old “running around the Apollo Theater like I could see” and heard that Jones was in the building.

“When I met Quincy, it was magical,” added Wonder. “I’d grown up listening to his music and arrangements; he knew Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra and others. After I did Talking Book, he recorded ‘You’ve Got It Bad Girl’ for one of his albums and also did ‘Superstition’ with Ray Charles for another.” Concluding his full-circle moment, Wonder noted, “I want to thank you [Quincy] for everything you’ve given me — all the inspiration, the many times you said it’s not quite right; keep working on it, and for bringing people together through music.”

Before teaming with Wonder, Austin delivered a soaring read on one of her own gems, “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?” A duet with singer James Ingram that was introduced in the 1982 film Best Friends, it became a hit single after being featured on Ingram’s Jones-produced 1983 debut album, It’s Your Night. Afterwards, Austin shouted out “two dear friends [now deceased] who made all of this possible”: Ingram and Marilyn Bergman, the song’s co-lyricist with widower Alan Bergman.

Samara Joy performs at Quincy Jones’ 90th-Birthday Tribute: A Musical Celebration at the Hollywood Bowl on July 29, 2023.

A Joyous Moment: With her reinterpretation of “Misty” — the Erroll Garner jazz classic that Sarah Vaughan recorded with Jones and his orchestra in 1958 — Samara Joy effortlessly underscored why she was awarded Grammys for best new artist and best jazz vocal album earlier this year. With a rich, full-bodied voice and subtle-into-soaring range and emotional nuances that belie the 23-year-old’s age, Joy and her performance — complemented by a riveting sax solo from another Jones collaborator, Larry Williams — called to mind Jones’ early start as a jazz trumpeter, arranger and conductor and his work with other female vocalists such as Dinah Washington. So did Aloe Blacc’s engaging rendering of one of Jones’ most famous arrangements: Frank Sinatra’s swinging take on the standard “Fly Me to the Moon” in 1964 with the Count Basie Orchestra also along for the ride.

Hudson’s Homage: Bringing forth the gusto that propelled “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” her signature song in the 2006 film Dreamgirls, Jennifer Hudson (who only performed on Saturday) fiercely punched her way through Lesley Gore’s 1963 feminist pop anthem, “You Don’t Own Me.” Jones, who broke the C-suite color barrier at a record label when he was appointed a vp at Mercury Records in 1961, produced the No. 2 single and also Gore’s earlier No. 1 debut, “It’s My Party.” Hudson’s performance — peppered with high, sustained notes — showed off her impeccable range as she strutted back and forth. Then as the music stopped, she strode offstage still belting out the phrase “you don’t own me” — prompting an audience member to yell, “You go, girl!”

The MJ Suite: Following a 20-minute intermission, the celebration got back down to business with a salute to the top-selling, award-winning collaborations between Jones and King of Pop Michael Jackson. Vula Malinga, one of the evening’s five talented background vocalists, jumpstarted the second half with a rousing performance of “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.” She returned to perform “P.Y.T.,” while fellow backing vocalist Avery Wilson energetically reprised “Rock With You,” “Off the Wall” and “Thriller.” With his mother Suzie Collier as conductor, Jones protégé Jacob Collier sat down at the piano for a touching take on “Human Nature.” Adding the icing on the segment was Siedah Garrett, who sang “Man in the Mirror,” which she and Glen Ballard co-wrote for Jackson. Her passionate and urgent delivery emphasized just how timeless that 1988 No. 1 song is given the current social and political climate here and globally.

John Legend
John Legend performs at Quincy Jones’ 90th-Birthday Tribute: A Musical Celebration at the Hollywood Bowl on July 29, 2023.

Double Encores: The Bowl’s full house was treated to two encores. The first: Jones’ cover of “Let the Good Times Roll” with Bono, Ray Charles and Wonder from 1995’s Q’s Jook Joint. Trading verses for the 2023 version were Austin, Joy, Collier, Jones’ protégé pianist Alfredo Rodriguez and trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf with guest drummer Gregg Field. Then Wonder returned to lead them and the evening’s other performers in his 1980 song “Happy Birthday,” written to commemorate the first national celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Wonder played an instrumental role in securing a federal holiday for the civil rights pioneer. “It would be crazy for me to not end this celebration with something that Quincy was the first one to say I’ll do it,” said Wonder referencing a TV special that marked the holiday’s first celebration. If not for you [Quincy], all of us on this stage wouldn’t be where we are today.”

Among the other artists comprising the lineup for the two-night Quincy Jones’ 90th Birthday Tribute: A Musical Celebration were: John Legend (Friday), Angélique Kidjo (Friday), BJ The Chicago Kid (Friday), Sheléa and Stevie Mackey.
