Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame’s Grand Opening to Celebrate 2023 Inductees James Brown, L.A. Reid & Babyface, More

Back before Cleveland was tapped to be the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, its downstate rival, Cincinnati, was also (briefly) in the mix for the honor of being the institution’s host. The city got on the short list thanks to its legacy as the home of pioneering label King Records, where a number of very early rock n’ roll, funk and R&B sides were cut by the likes of James Brown, Bootsy Collins, Otis Williams and others; not for nothing, but Billboard was founded in the city in 1894.

And while the Queen City missed out on that Rock Hall of Fame, on Saturday (July 22), Cincinnati will get its own circle of honor when the long-awaited Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame opens to the public in a splashy ceremony that will unveil a years-in-the-works project to honor the city’s unique place in music history.

“The historical part of this place is that African-American slaves lived in this flood plain and [the Hall of Fame] is across from Paycor Stadium, where the annual Cincinnati Music Festival takes place,” says Hamilton County Commissioner Alicia Reece, the main driver behind the project in reference to the 61-year-old locally promoted gathering that has brought the best of funk, soul, R&B and jazz to her hometown for six decades.

Reece’s passion for the Walk of Fame is evidence by her bubbling enthusiasm over a recent Zoom call, as well as a voice already hoarse from her duties hyping her passion project in the lead-up to this weekend’s grand unveiling. And she comes by it naturally. Her mother, Barbara Howard, was a national recording artist, and her father, Steven Reece Sr., was a local rep for Motown Records who helped to bring both the Beatles and Aretha Franklin to town for their first-ever Cincinnati dates.

When her mother died at 57, Reece says she realized her purpose was to make sure that she left something for future generations. “These stories can’t die when we die,” she says. So she began the yearslong process of pushing to convert an empty downtown lot into her vision of a free-to-the-public Hall of Fame honoring the city’s Black music legends of pop, rock, funk, gospel, hip-hop, jazz and classical music.

Describing the multi-level Hall of Fame layout — a necessity due to its proximity to the Ohio River floodplain — Ron Bunt, senior VP of design firm JRA tells Billboard that visitors will descent a series of ramps with a number of interactive displays that will bring the city’s music history to life. After entering through a towering stainless steel arch that explains the various features, visitors will see a series of 13 podiums that each feature the stories of two prominent Black Cincinnati artists.

This year’s inductees include soul superstar Brown, who recorded some of his more iconic songs at King Records, as well as The Deele, an early 1980s R&B group featuring future superstars and local legends L.A. Reid and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. Also on the list is late Spinners (“Could It Be I’m Falling In Love”) singer Philippé Wynne and Louise Shropshire, who penned the original lyrics to what became the civil rights anthem “We Shall Overcome.”

The two previous classes included the first inductees, funk bass master Bootsy Collins, the Isley Brothers, gospel singer Dr. Charles Ford and The Charms doo-wop singer Williams; the 2022 class featured Klymaxx/Snap! singer Penny Ford, hip-hop producer Hi-Tek (50 Cent, Snoop Dogg), R&B/jazz guitarist Wilbert Longmire and funk group Midnight Star.

“Each podium has a brief bio, and album cover, which, when you scan the QR code, will make the artist pop out with more information,” Bunt says of the displays that will also feature copy in braille and a haptic panel that will allow hearing impaired visitors to “feel” the music. In addition, they will allow users to listen to a 30-second clip of the artist’s music, with the QR code providing access to the Walk of Fame’s website, where you can read more about all the inductees.

There is also a feature called the “Beatmaker,” with 8 drum heads that interact with the lights and an adjacent fountain, acting like a kind of Simon Says game in which visitors follow Hi-Tek’s instructions to keep up with the music, as well as areas with three-minute video clips about each act and panels with the stories of local music influencers.

“It’s a holistic experience that tells an important story that’s never been told,” says Bunt of the hands-on displays that will include an AR component allowing visitors to “jam” on stage with Bootsy and Ford’s avatars. He and Reece are also both excited about a twice-nightly “Takeover Dance party” where the speakers on all the displays will synch up for a music and light show that will encourage attendees to boogie to the music. “It’s kind of an ‘a-ha’ moment for a lot of people when you hear songs you grew up with that most people didn’t know were by people who are from here, which tells yo how worldwide this story is,” Bunt says.

The final iteration of the multi-million project will have room for up to 200 honorees and Saturday’s grand opening will feature a free show by the Ohio Players. “We wanted something that will bridge the gap between generations… grandmas and their grandkids can come and see something educational and entertaining,” says Reece.

Friday Dance Music Guide: The Week’s Best New Tracks From Gorgon City, REZZ & More

This week in dance music: The dance music community mourned ghetto house pioneer DJ Deeon, who passed away at age 56, Mayan Warrior organizers announced one final party for its recently burned down art car that happen this Halloween in Los Angeles, we spoke with Odetari, the Houston producer behind some of the biggest dance tracks of the year, the Chemical Brothers announced that their tenth studio album is coming this September, Steve Angello’s SIZE Records announced a partnership with Astralwerks and we shared exclusive Lightning In a Bottle 2023 sets from BLOND:ISH, Zhu, Moore Kismet, Wreckno and Liquid Stranger.

Along with all that has, once again, come a flurry of new dance tracks. Here are the best of the week.

Gorgon City feat. Santino Le Saint “Gasoline”

The Label: Astralwerks

The Spiel: Gorgon City are out with their fourth studio album, Salvation. Containing the already released singles “Voodoo,” and “Lost & Found” the album demonstrates that ten years in, this duo is deeply consistent, racking up a decade of sophisticated, very pretty and often quite cool music that builds up on the general aesthetic with each new release, but which never veers off too far from the core idea. The same remains true with “Gasoline,” which comes towards the clubbier end of the album and pulses with a dramatic piano intro, a rolling bass line, flecks of acid house, offbeat synth stabs and the same lushness and mystique that’s always been a key feature of the Gorgon City catalog. The breathy vocals here are from London singer Santino Le Saint, who delivers the titular sweet nothing “in the flames of desire, you’re the fuel to my fire, like gasoline.”

The Artist Says: “We really hope you guys love it as much as we do,” the pair wrote on Twitter. “It was an incredible experience writing it with all the amazing collaborators.”

The Vibe: Hot blooded.

CC:Disco!, Confidence Man, “Chez Moi (Waiting For You)”

The Label: Phantasy Sound

The Spiel: Australian-born, Lisbon-based DJ/producer/label head, etc CC:DISCO! links with the fellow Aussies of Confidence Man for “Chez Moi.” French for “at my house,” the title is a clever one, with the cerebral, dreamy deep house anthem floating in like a cloud before getting tough in a really nice way.

The Artist Says: “Thank you so much to everyone who has been so supportive and [Phantasy Sound] for taking a chance on this record,” CC:DISCO! wrote on Instagram. “Now get into the sunshine and play this at full volume. I hope you like it!

The Vibe: Friday night at chez moi

Alesso feat. John Newman, “Call Your Name”

The Label: Tomorrowland Music

The Spiel: A song several years in the making, “Call Your Name” is majorly anthemic stuff, with Alesso’s maximalist dance-pop production serving as a large-ass foundation for John Newman to sing to the rafters about wanting to call your name when you’re lost in the heat of the moment and whatnot. Both artists play the mainstage at Tomorrowland this weekend.

The Artist Says: “‘Call Your Name’ is a throwback to the dance era that we all know and love,” says Alesso. “John’s vocal really carries this nostalgic, powerful feeling and playing this one out recently has shown this track is made for the main stage!”

The Vibe: So excited at the mainstage that you’re legitimately barely keeping it together.

REZZ Feat. MKLA, “Haunted Eyes”

The Label: HypnoVizion Records

The Spiel: REZZ’s output has always had heavy elements, so a new EP exploring her rock influences isn’t all that surprising. But It’s Not a Phase does demonstrate how well her longstanding aesthetic — pummeling beats, headbanging, a general sense of darknesss — translates to less overtly electronic music, with the seven-track project heavily incorporating guitars and vocalists, much like the bands that the producer born Isabelle Rezzezadeh grew up listening to. A standout is the pummeling “Haunted Eyes,” which features Toronto-based singer, whose breathy vocals juxtapose expertly with REZZ’s slabs of sound.

The Artist Says: “With this goth EP, I’ve really encapsulated some of my early inspiration musically before I even got into dance music,” REZZ says. “I grew up listening to bands exclusively, and over time developed an understanding of what it was about those songs that I loved. Lots of use of guitar, eerie melodies and distorted basses – this is a blend between sounds I’m known for while also expanding on my range with using new vocal styles and instruments.”

The Vibe: The incredible catharsis of aggressively riding the rail.

Sam Divine feat. Josh Barry, “Take My Hand”

The Label: Defected Records

The Spiel: U.K. house veteran Sam Divine sounds fresh as ever on her latest, “Take My Hand.” The track shimmers with sophisticated flourishes, which all exist above a pulsing bassline that adds weight to the effervescent production. The track is completed by vocals from Josh Barry, whose previously sang on tracks by groups including Gorgon City and Rudimental, and who here adds warmth and soul to the pristinely produced track.

The Vibe: Take my hand, my heart, my bank account information, whatever — just don’t stop this song.

Keys N Krates & Rochelle Jordan, “What You Done”

The Label: Defected Records

The Spiel: The always divine Rochelle Jordan links with the Keys N Krates guys for a very cool, very sexy, very simmering heater on which Jordan delivers gorgeously silky vocals over a smart, spare production that leans equally into straight percussion and waves of synth.

The Vibe: ’90s Mariah.

BTS’ Jung Kook Lands Top 10 Debut In Australia With ‘Seven’

BTS star Jung Kook just misses out on his first solo chart crown in Australia, as “Seven” starts at No. 2.

Featuring rapper Latto, “Seven” (via ING/Universal) arrives on the ARIA Chart, published July 21, behind Dave and Central Cee’s “Sprinter” (Virgin Music Australia/Universal), which races away for its sixth non-consecutive week at No. 1.

That’s easily the best solo effort for the K-pop superstar, who featured on Charlie Puth’s 2022 release “Left And Right,” peaking at No. 19 on the national tally. Latto’s previous best was a No. 6 peak for 2021’s “Big Energy” featuring DJ Khaled.

Also new to the ARIA Singles Chart is Billie Eilish, with “What Was I Made For?” (Interscope/Universal) from the soundtrack to the Barbie movie, which has opened in theaters countrywide. “What Was I Made For?” debuts at No. 8, for the U.S. pop star’s 14th top 10 single in these parts, a collection that includes her chart-leader from 2019, “Bad Guy.”

Two other Barbie numbers are on the climb this week: “Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and AQUA (up 42-23) and Dua Lipa’s “Dance The Night” (up 40-27), both via Atlantic/Warner.

Australian pop artist Troye Sivan bags his 12th top 50 single with “Rush” (EMI), lifted from his forthcoming album, Something To Give Each Other, slated to drop in October. “Rush” is new at No. 12, and not far from his career best chart position, a No. 10 peak for 2014’s “Happy Little Pill.”

It’s all Taylor Swift on the ARIA Albums Chart as Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) (via Universal) retains top spot for a second week. A week ago, Swift’s third and latest “Version” LP replaced her own Midnights album at the summit, a handover never seen before on the Australian chart.

The two-week stint for Swift’s recorded Speak Now album eclipses the one-week reign for its original, from 2010, ARIA reports.

The highest debut on the albums tally belongs to legendary Australian artist Tina Arena, whose new set Love Saves (Positive Dream/ADA) starts at No. 2. Arena now boasts nine top 10 albums, including No. 1s for 1994’s Don’t Ask and 1997’s In Deep. Earlier this year, Arena was the inaugural recipient of Rolling Stone Australia’s Icon Award, which she received during a ceremony in Sydney.

Swift secures three of the top 5, with Midnights holding at No. 3 and Lover unchanged at No. 4.

Blur Return For Ninth Studio Album ‘The Ballad of Darren’: Stream It Now

New music from Blur doesn’t just sprout from the ground, fall from the air, or materialize without sufficient fanfare.

The British pop-rock band was a standout of the ‘90s Britpop era, an act with charm, hits, a loveable line-up, and, as it turns out, longevity and a knack for reinvention.

While many of their contemporaries are frozen in time, Blur remains relevant.

The original combination of Damon Albarn (vocals/keyboard), Graham Coxon (vocals/guitar), Alex James (bass) and Dave Rowntree (drums) returns for The Ballad Of Darren (via Parlophone), Blur’s ninth studio album and first in eight years.

Arriving at the stroke of midnight, The Ballad Of Darren was produced by James Ford, and recorded at Studio 13 in London and Devon, England in spring of this year.

Comprising 10 tracks, including the first release “The Narcissist,” which earned the lads their first Airplay Chart top 10 since 1997, plus followup “St. Charles Square,” The Ballad of Darren is the result of a fortuitous gathering of the bandmembers at Albarn’s West London studio just six months ago.

Since then, the foursome has shaken off the rust with several triumphant performances, including headline slots at Wembley Stadium on July 8 and 9. Both dates were sellouts.

More shows will follow.

Blur will embark on a run of Continental European festival dates, starting Saturday (July 22) at Italy’s Lucca Summer Festival, followed by spots at Japan’s Summer Sonic fest and additional dates in Central and South America. Fans everywhere can log into a “Live from London” presentation on July 25, for what is said to be the first ever performance of the new LP.

The Ballad of Darren follows the release of The Magic Whip in 2015, which hit No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart, one of the band’s six leaders. Albarn and Co. have landed 13 U.K. top 10 singles, including No. 1s with “Country House” (1995) and “Beetlebum” (1997).

7 Things You Didn’t See on TV at the 2023 Premios Juventud

The 2023 Premios Juventud celebrated its 20th anniversary from the Coliseo José Miguel Agrelot on Thursday (July 20) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the theme of “Exprésate a tu Manera” (Express Yourself Authentically).

Shakira was the night’s biggest winner, taking home eight awards, in addition to the coveted Agent of Change special award.

While her emotional speeches were televised, along with memorable performances such as Hoobastank singing a salsa version of “The Reason,” and reggaeton veterans such as Zion y Lennox, R.K.M. y Ken-Y, and more, joining forces for a throwback performance, Billboard was at the red carpet and media center, catching all the action you didn’t see on TV.

Check out the list below:

1. At the red carpet, Fuerza Regida, who performed on the show, told Billboard that they are big fans of Jhayco and, in fact, have a collaboration in the works but can’t share further details. The Puerto Rican rapper is no new face to the Música Mexicana realm. Cortez teamed up with Ivan Cornejo for “Esta Dañada (Remix)” in 2012 and this year, with Eslabon Armado in “Tomando Tequila.”

2. Billboard observed a real boy band encounter while interviewing Piso 21 on the red carpet. During the interview, where they were talking about their first-ever U.S. tour kicking off in September, Mexican pop group Camila walked by and greeted the boys. In the unexpected encounter, Pablo of Piso 21 told Camila that the reason they even became a group in the first place is because of Camila’s influence and inspiration.

3. Speaking of Camila, the Mexican pop group has reunited after more than 10 years. In its triumphant comeback, which included a performance of their latest single “Fugitivos” and a medley of their biggest hits, the group helmed by Samo, Mario Domm, and Pablo Hurtado revealed that they will be going on tour. This year, they will kick things off in Mexico and hope to extend the trek to the U.S. in 2024.

4. The Argentine movement was well represented at the 2023 Premios Juventud. Not only did Khea and Tiago PZK give an emotional performance of “Para Amarte a Ti,” followed by Tiago’s new perreo “Asqueroso,” but nominated act Rusher King was also present. “It’s incredible and we’re always conscious that if the artists of Argentina join forces, we can reach more people and transmit that union. That’s the message we want to send and we’re happy that we can do that with our music,” the artist, one of Billboard’s 23 Latin Artists to Watch in 2023, told Billboard. Both Rusher and Khea attended Premios Juventud for the first time.

5. Shakira was the big winner of the night, and although she did not visit the media center, she did go backstage for photos. The Colombian artist, rocking a red, fitted dress and her loose blonde locks, posed with her eight Premios Juventud trophies, and was joined by her sons Sasha and Milan, as the press captured photos and videos from afar.

Shakira speaks onstage during the 2023 Premios Juventud Awards at Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot on July 20, 2023 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

6. In a first-ever performance, Chiquis was joined onstage by her younger sisters Jacquie and Jenicka for a heartfelt performance of “Pedacito de Mi,” dedicated to their late mother Jenni Rivera. The performance marked Jacquie and Jenicka’s TV debut, telling Billboard at the red carpet that the best advice they got from Chiquis ahead of the performance was to be themselves… and to wear the same shoes that they wore at rehearsals.

7. Backstage at the media center, Mexican pop artist Kenia Os was surprised with three awards. She had no idea she was going to win, and in fact, thought she was going to walk away with zero-from-five nominations. A shocked Kenia, who proudly dedicated her wins to her fans and the Puerto Rican community, nabbed the awards for new generation – female artist, I want more, and best fandom. Following a brief Q&A with the press, the artist asked her publicist to take photos of her with her phone and happily posed with her silver PJs.

“Love Like This” features the 30-year-old diving head first into romance, regardless of the risks it poses. “I guess there’s love like this/ Usually I never wanna jump like this,” Malik sings on the track, over house inspired beats. “I guess there’s faith like this/ Give you everything and you can skate like this/ But I think I gotta take that risk ’cause I can not go back/ And I’m loving what you say, what you say, what you say when you’re on my line.”

“Love Like This” likely serves as the first single from Malik’s upcoming fourth album. The star recently inked a deal with Mercury Records. Billboard revealed that sources close to the ex-boy bander said the new music ZAYN is making marks a major departure from the sound featured on his hits in the 2010s like “Pillowtalk” and “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever.”

Malik’s previous albums, Mind of Mine (2016), Icarus Falls (2018) and Nobody Is Listening (2021) peaked at No. 1, No. 61 and No. 44 on the Billboard 200, respectively. The singer — who was the first of One Direction to go solo — previously scored two top 5 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Pillowtalk” (No. 1) and “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” (No. 2).

“KPOP” comes just a week before Scott’s Utopia livestream event at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt on July 28 to launch his first studio album in five years. The Houston rapper released his last album, Astroworld, on Aug. 3, 2018, which topped both the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and contained the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single “SICKO MODE” with Drake.

Eslabon Armado Inspires Massive Singalong with ‘Ella Baila Sola’ at Premios Juventud 2023

Eslabon Armado showcased their música mexicana hit-making prowess at Premios Juventud 2023 with a performance of their hit “Ella Baila Sola.”

Armed with invigorating requinto riffs and a standup bass to further amp up the vibe, the California troupe inspired a dance-off at the ceremony, with folks seemingly knowing every lyric to the corridos banger.

Moments before, Eslabon Armado collected their award for best song – regional Mexican music for the popular number, originally sung with July Billboard cover star, Peso Pluma. Unlike some artists who accepted their prizes, the background was lit with the crowd shouting the words to the No. 1 song on Billboard Latin charts. Frontman Pedro Tovar sang part of it too, thrilled, before speaking to the audience.

No tengo palabras, ahorita mi corazón esta palpitando muy recio. ¡Puro México, y que viva Puerto Rico! También les quiero decir que si no fueran por ustedes, no estuviéramos aquí,” said the lead singer. (“I have no words, right now my heart is pounding so hard. Long live Mexico, and long live Puerto Rico! I also want to tell you that if it were not for you, we would not be here.)

Eslabon Armado made history with Desvelado, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart.  “It means a lot being No. 1 on Top Latin Albums,” Pedro Tovar told Billboard in May. “It’s probably our favorite album, but we didn’t expect it to go that high. Mainly because I know that people don’t like something at first, but when four, five, six months or a whole year pass by, there’s always that one song that hits, and then everybody is like, ‘Oh, this is my favorite album!’”

On the all-genre Billboard 200, Desvelado opened at No. 6, becoming the highest-ranking ever for a regional Mexican album since December 2014, when the tally began tracking physical units alongside on-demand streaming and digital track sales.

Premios Juventud celebrates its 20th anniversary from the Coliseo José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the theme of “Exprésate a tu Manera” (Express Yourself Authentically). The ceremony is televised by Univision.

Co-hosted by Alejandra Espinoza and Angela Aguilar, this year’s PJs debuts 15 new categories that “reflect the latest trends” in Latin music, such as best song for my ex, best urban track and best urban mix, among others.

This year, Shakira and Camila Cabello will receive the special “Agent of Change” award, joining past honorees that include Jesse & Joy, Maluma, Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Kany Garcia, Jenni Rivera Foundation, Ricky Martin, Becky G, Pitbull, Juanpa Zurita, and Wisin y Yandel.
