Jason Aldean’s ‘Try That in a Small Town’ Tops Hot Country Songs Chart

Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town” rockets back in atop Billboard’s streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart dated July 29.

The single re-enters at the summit after spending one prior week on the survey at No. 35 in June, following its release.

Related

The track returns with the biggest sales week for a country song in over 10 years, after CMT pulled its video, which premiered July 14, from rotation after three days, resulting in a surge of attention.

Aldean achieves his 10th Hot Country Songs leader and 37th top 10 with “Try That in a Small Town,” which was co-written by Kurt Allison, Tully Kennedy, Kelley Lovelace and Neil Thrasher.

It becomes Aldean’s first Hot Country Songs No. 1 since 2014, when “Burnin’ It Down” dominated for 14 frames starting that August. He first ruled in 2006 when “Why” led for a week that May.

Meanwhile, with 37 Hot Country Songs top 10s, Aldean has now peaked in the top tier at least once each year dating to his first such hit, “Hicktown,” in 2005 – the longest active streak of annual top 10s on the chart.

“Try That in a Small Town” sold 228,000 downloads – up 27,625% – in the July 14-20 tracking week, according to Luminate. It awards Aldean his 11th No. 1 on Country Digital Song Sales. It also crowns the all-genre Digital Song Sales survey, becoming his second leader, after “Burnin’ It Down.”

“Try That in a Small Town” boasts the largest sales week for a country track since Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise,” featuring Nelly, sold 244,000, as reflected on the chart dated July 6, 2013.

Concurrently, “Try That in a Small Town” drew 11.6 million streams (up 547%). On Country Airplay, it holds at No. 25, with 6.5 million audience impressions (up 16%).

On July 18, Billboard confirmed that CMT had dropped the song’s official video, after three days in rotation; the network declined to say why. Following CMT’s decision, Aldean posted a message to his Instagram Stories addressing the various reactions that the song and video have faced.

The official video for the track, released July 14, features footage of an American flag burning, protesters in confrontation with police, looters breaking a display case and thieves robbing a convenience store. The clip has prompted a firestorm of opinions about it and the song’s intent and messaging.

Aldean addressed the polarized response during his Highway Desperado Tour stop Friday (July 21) at Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center. “It’s been a long week and I’ve seen a lot of stuff suggesting I’m this, suggesting I’m that,” he told the crowd. “I feel like everybody’s entitled to their opinion. You can think something all you want to; it doesn’t mean it’s true. What I am is a proud American. I’m proud to be from here … I love my country, I love my family, and I will do anything to protect that, I can tell you that right now.”

Meanwhile, “Try That in a Small Town” marks the second title that has re-entered Hot Country Songs at the pinnacle since the list became an all-encompassing genre survey in 1958. Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” opened at No. 46 in May 2015 and re-entered at No. 1 that November. His first of three No. 1s led for two weeks, following his three wins at the 49th Country Music Association Awards.

Karol G, Shakira & More: Which Latin Artist Should Portray The Next Barbie? Vote!

People of all ages, from all parts of the world, hit movie theaters wearing pink to watch the highly anticipated Barbie movie during its opening weekend.

The social media buzz was so strong that the Warner Bros. film starring Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Ryan Gosling (Ken) claimed the top spot with a massive $155 million in ticket sales from North American theaters from 4,243 locations, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie (as well as every Marvel movie this year) as the biggest opening of the year and breaking the first-weekend record for a film directed by a woman, Billboard previously reported

With the Barbie phenomenon in full swing, Billboard put together a fan poll to ask readers which Latin artist should portray Barbie next — if, in a dream world, there’s a sequel to the movie.

The list includes 25 artists such as Karol G, whose “WATATI” in collaboration with Aldo Ranks is on the movie’s original soundtrack and includes a totally plastic and pink-tastic music video featuring scenes from the film.

Mexican pop star Kenia Os, who’s a big Barbie fan, is also on the list. “What I most remember about my Barbie era is that I was a little girl that really took care of every little thing,” she previously told Billboard. “I remember I had the pans, forks, all the little utensils that came with the Barbies, and I would really take care of them. My mom would let me play with my Barbies after doing my homework and I would always get home late from school because I went to school in the afternoon so I’d have little time with my Barbies. But when I was officially on vacation from school, I would play with my Barbies all day long.”

The poll also includes singers who are actresses too, such as Thalia, Greeicy, Danna Paola, TINI and RBD’s Anahí, to name a few.  Who should portray the next Barbie? Vote below

‘SpongeBob’ Voice Actor’s Wife Clarifies That Her Husband Is Not Dating Ariana Grande

There seems to have been some confusion as to which patty-flipping yellow sponge has reportedly stolen Ariana Grande’s heart — and now the record has been set straight.

Related

For context, the “7 Rings” singer is reportedly dating Ethan Slater, who starred as SpongeBob in Broadway’s The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage. Ari is not dating Tom Kenny, who voiced SpongeBob in the iconic Nickelodeon show.

Kenny’s wife, Jill Talley, clarified that she’s still very much married to the voice actor under an Instagram post about Grande’s alleged new relationship posted by The Cut. “Hi everyone, I’m married to Tom Kenny (who voices SpongeBob on the TV show),” she wrote. “He is not dating Ariana Grande. I don’t know if Ethan Slater (who played SpongeBob in the musical) is or isn’t dating Ariana Grande. However, they’re both adorable and I totally ship it. Just wanted to set the record straight. P.S. as for me and Tom Kenny — we are celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary today.”

Both TMZ and People report that Slater and Grande started dating after both of their relationships were over. Slater is separated from singer Lilly Jay; the two celebrated their four-year wedding anniversary in November 2022. Grande married Dalton Gomez two years ago, but the two separated.

Grande plays Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba in Jon M. Chu’s upcoming live-action film adaptation of the Broadway show Wicked, which will be split into two parts. In the film, Slater is playing Boq, a munchkin boy who, fittingly, has a crush on Glinda.

Sentence Announced for Man from Springfield Accused of Downtown Shooting

A man from Springfield will spend over a decade in prison on charges stemming from a shooting downtown that injured one person.

20-year-old Kerry Brooks was charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon after investigators say he shot another man in the foot in a parking garage on August 28 of last year.

He was arrested and charged two weeks later, on September 15.

Police saw video footage of the incident, where a person who appeared to be Brooks was carrying a handgun. The suspect pointed the handgun at a vehicle, forcing the driver out of the car.

At that time, another car pulled up with multiple people coming to the scene to assault the victim. Brooks then shot the man in the foot before fleeing the scene.

When authorities arrived, the victim was the only one at the scene.

The man told investigators Brooks asked to use a vape pen, but he said no.

Brooks was sentenced to 14 years in prison, seven for assault, four years for armed criminal action and three for assault.

The sentences will be served consecutively.

Man from Kansas Arrested in Springfield for Shooting an Infant

A man from Topeka is in custody in Springfield after allegedly shooting and killing an infant in Kansas.

29-year-old Alfred Smith was arrested in Springfield Thursday, July 20, and is being held in the Greene County Jail.

Investigators say Smith went to an apartment in Topeka to visit Toyana Taylor-Adams and their son, two-month-old Alonzoe on the night of July 14th.

Taylor-Adams says she hadn’t seen him since he abandoned her and the baby a few days after he was born.

She stepped outside the apartment to call relatives to let them know Smith was visiting when she heard a gunshot.

When Taylor-Adams came back up the stairs, she was met by Smith, holding the baby in his arms with blood on him and the child.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Alonzoe’s funeral services.

Prosecutors say Smith is being held without bond due to him crossing state lines as a fugitive.

The details of his charges have not been released at this time.

TikTok Sleuth Appears to Find Jim Crow Era News Story in Jason Aldean’s ‘Try That in a Small Town’ Teaser

Jason Aldean dared his audience to “Try That in a Small Town” — so one TikTok user decided to take him up on the offer.

Related

In a TikTok posted on Saturday (July 22), former minor league baseball player Danny Collins did a deep dive on one of Aldean’s promotional TikToks for his controversial song released back in May. Zooming in on a newspaper article in the background of one of the video’s shots, Collins found that it appears to be a piece pulled from a since-discontinued small newspaper from Mississippi.

Finding the original article in an online archive, Collins shared that the clipping used for the video looks to be from a 1956 issue of The Petal Paper in Petal, Miss., in which a public relations consultant for the NAACP wrote to the publication’s editor P.D. East, commending him for using his platform to ridicule white supremacists and criticize the Jim Crow era policy of segregation in schools.

“Never have I seen anything that startled me as much as the March 15 issue of the Petal Paper with its incredible ridiculing of the White Citizens Council crowd. I’m referring specifically to the full-page as I assume you wrote headed, ‘You Too, Can Be Superior,’” the letter read. “I hope I am not congratulating a dead man. This must have taken courage and I hope you are still with us.”

Collins goes on to read portions of East’s response letter, in which the editor detailed being called an “N-lover,” losing subscriptions to his paper and being “bothered and harassed” continually by citizens of his town. In a 1971 column written for The New York Times, East further detailed his experience, saying his open criticism of school segregation led to him losing every subscriber of the Petal Paper, and at one point receiving three death threats in a single week.

In closing his TikTok, Collins pointed back to the accusations against Aldean of including thinly veiled racist dogwhistles throughout his song’s video, saying that the inclusion of this letter to East in the promotional clip felt very on the nose. “Why would this happen to Mr. P.D. East? Because he tried that in a small town,” Collins said. “He challenged the Southern, racist establishment. But let Jason Aldean tell it … and this song has ‘nothing’ to do with race.”

Billboard has reached out to Aldean for comment.

Related

Billboard broke the news on July 18 that CMT had pulled Aldean’s video for the song from their airwaves. In response to the criticism of his song, the country singer shared a comment across his social media accounts, claiming that the accusations of racist songwriting against him were wrong. “There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it and there isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage,” he wrote. “While I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music — this one goes too far.”

“Try That in a Small Town” was written by Kelley Lovelace, Neil Thrasher, Tully Kennedy and Kurt Michael Allison.
