Fans Choose Dua Lipa’s ‘Dance the Night’ as This Week’s Favorite New Music

Dua Lipa‘s “Dance the Night” has topped this week’s new music poll.

Music fans voted in a poll published Friday (May 26) on Billboard, choosing the 27-year-old pop singer’s Barbie movie song as their favorite new music release of the past week.

“Dance the Night” brought in 37% of the vote, beating out new music by Taylor Swift, Lil Durk, d4vd, Peso Pluma, and others.

The disco-tinged track — the first single from Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film and its respective soundtrack — was co-written with Mark Ronson, Caroline Ailin and Andrew Wyatt. The track was co-produced by Wyatt and Picard Brothers.

Lipa offers up stylish synth instrumentals and disco elements that send a surge of dopamine to the brain, while serving as an extension of her wildly successful Future Nostalgia album run. Complicated romances, broken hearts and tears do not stand a chance when the singer is burning up the dance floor.

The pop star is confirmed to be starring in the highly anticipated live-action movie, in which she’ll play a mermaid doll alongside Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken.

Ronson serves as executive producer for the Barbie soundtrack, which is officially titled Barbie the Album. Other artists appearing on the set include Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, Lizzo, Charli XCX, and PinkPantheress. The soundtrack arrives July 21 — the same day the movie hits theaters.

Trailing behind “Dance the Night” on the poll is Swift’s Midnights (The Til Dawn Edition), with nearly 22% of the vote, followed by her Ice Spice-assisted “Karma” remix, with approximately 18% of the vote.

Ed Ames, Singer With the Ames Brothers & TV Star in ‘Daniel Boone,’ Dies at 95

Ed Ames, the youngest member of the popular 1950s singing group the Ames Brothers, who later became a successful actor in television and musical theater, has died. He was 95.

The last survivor of the four singing brothers, Ames died May 21 from Alzheimer’s disease, his wife, Jeanne Ames, said Saturday (May 27).

“He had a wonderful life,” she said.

On television, Ames was likely best known for his role as Mingo, the Oxford-educated Native American in the 1960s adventure series Daniel Boone that starred Fess Parker as the famous frontiersman. He also was the center of a bit on The Tonight Show that — thanks to his painfully uncanny aim with a hatchet — became one of the show’s most memorable surprise moments.

Ames had guest roles in TV series such as Murder, She Wrote and In the Heat of the Night, and toured frequently in musicals, performing such popular songs as “Try to Remember” and the song that became his biggest hit single, “My Cup Runneth Over.”

As part of the 1950s music scene, he and his brothers were one of numerous pop quartets that included the Four Aces, Four Lads, Gaylords, Hilltoppers, Lancers, Four Knights, Ink Spots and, still around from a previous era, the Mills Brothers. But the Ames Brothers — Ed, Joe, Gene and Vic — had a unique tone: they were basses and baritones, not tenors.

Their recordings of “Rag Mop,” “Sentimental Me” and “Undecided” became big hits, and they launched a busy career appearing on TV variety shows, recording 40 albums and playing in night clubs and auditoriums across the country.

By the end of the 1950s, rock ‘n’ roll had overtaken the pop charts and singing quartets were on the decline. The Ameses, meanwhile, had tired of the constant travel and absence from their growing families. The finale for Ed came when he arrived home unexpectedly and his wife called to their 3-year-old daughter: “Who is it?” The girl replied, “One of the Ames Brothers.”

“That did it,” he told a reporter. “My brothers and I agreed that we had all had it and should go our separate ways.” The group, which was earning $20,000 a week, played its last engagement at the Sahara in Las Vegas on New Year’s 1961.

Ed’s efforts to establish himself as a solo singer were not immediately successful and he turned to acting. He almost lost his house before he found a role in a production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.

In the long-running musical The Fantasticks, he sang “Try to Remember,” which became one of his theme songs. He joined the traveling company of Gower Champion’s Carnival and transferred to the New York company until the show’s final performance.

In a role that presaged his future role on Daniel Boone, he then won attention as the stoic Native American in the 1963 Broadway play One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest with Kirk Douglas and Gene Wilder in the adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel.

Ames earned top money at Las Vegas casinos and in hotel supper clubs and toured extensively in the musicals Man of La Mancha, Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific and I Do, I Do.

I Do, I Do provided his biggest hit single, “My Cup Runneth Over,” a gold record winner in 1967. He had another hit in 1968 with “Who Will Answer?”

It was during his run on Daniel Boone that he contributed to what was called the longest sustained burst of laughter in the history of The Tonight Show.

For a 1965 episode he was persuaded to demonstrate the hatchet-throwing skills he learned as Mingo. The silhouette of a cowboy was painted on a piece of wood, and Ames threw a hatchet at the target. It landed on squarely on the cowboy’s crotch.

Ames was born Edmund Dantes Urick in Malden, Massachusetts, the youngest of 11 children, four who died in childhood. Their parents were Ukrainian immigrants and their mother taught the children to read Shakespeare and to appreciate music they heard every Saturday on the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts.

The four youngest boys began singing at local events as the Urick Brothers. Ed was still in high school when they moved to night clubs, but as a husky six-footer with a deep voice, he was able to pass for 21.

In New York, comedy writer Abe Burrows advised a name change because Urick was hard to remember. Ames was the brothers’ choice.

After the four brothers split up, the other brothers also continued performing and recording, but gained less notice than Ed. Vic died in 1978, Gene in 1997 and Joe in December 2007.

Ames and his first wife, Sara Cacheiro, had three children: Sonja, Ronald and Linda. The couple divorced in 1978, and in 1998 he married Jeanne Arnold.

Feid, Wisin & Yandel, Ivy Queen & More: Sueños 2023’s Best Moments From Day 1

The 2023 edition of Sueños got off to a strong start with performances by Feid, Wisin & Yandel, El Alfa, Ivy Queen, Gera MX, paopao and many more.

Unofficially launching the summer, day one of the music festival in Chicago had it all: old-school perreo with Chencho, girl-power with the ever-so fierce Ivy Queen and even a passionate speech from Chicago’s new mayor, Brandon Johnson.

“As long as I’m mayor of Chicago, Sueños will always exist,” the newly-elected leader said in front of a euphoric crowd.

The exclusively all-Latin Sueños is taking place in the city’s Grant Park on Memorial Day Weekend (May 27-28). From the founders of Mexico’s Baja Beach Fest, Sueños made its debut in 2022 with headlining acts J Balvin, Ozuna, and Farruko. Returning acts include Puerto Rican rapper Myke Towers, Dominican dembow purveyor El Alfa, as well as reggaeton pioneers Wisin & Yandel.

“We’re thrilled to be coming back to Chicago for our second annual Sueños festival,” Aaron Ampudia and Chris Den Uijl, co-founders of Sueños, previously told Billboard Español. “Last year was such a moment, you could feel the energy and excitement from fans no matter where you were at in the festival. It just felt like we were meant to be there, celebrating Latin music and culture with Chicago’s thriving Latino community — and this year we’re bringing even more.”

For a second year in a row, Wisin & Yandel — or best known as “El Dúo de la Historia” — helped close out the fest. The Puerto Rican hitmakers took fans down memory lane performing all the reggaeton hits such as “Abusadora,” “El Teléfono” and “Pam Pam,” to name a few.

Taylor Swift’s Best Moments at MetLife Stadium on Night 2 of Her Blockbuster Eras Tour

Taylor Swift brought her Eras Tour – which, so far, has seen arguably the biggest pop star on the planet playing to sold-out crowds on a trek that’s on track to net at least $590 million in ticket sales – to East Rutherford, New Jersey for a second night on Saturday (May 27).

Aside from the hoops everyone at MetLife Stadium went through to be present (Swift’s tour ticket sales proved too much for Ticketmaster to handle, a situation that escalated to the U.S. Congress), people showed up with fairly high expectations for the evening. After all, the previous night’s Eras Tour stop in Jersey saw a surprise appearance from Ice Spice on their newly released “Karma” remix; Jack Antonoff joined his frequent collaborator for “Getaway Car” on one of two surprise songs; and Swift debuted three flashy new outfits.

So on Saturday, the crowd was prepared for a show. And after a three-and-a-half-hour tour through the catalog of one of the 21st century’s biggest artists – one whose discography has shown a lyrical breadth and growth that few of her peers can lay claim to – attendees were more than satisfied, if not ecstatic, after night two of the MetLife dates.

It didn’t hurt that Ice Spice made her second consecutive appearance on the tour for the show-ending “Karma,” a sly pop bop that afforded the Bronx-based rapper the opportunity to flex in front of a 74,000-strong crowd of New York and New Jersey folks following the breakout success of “Munch (Feelin’ U)” and the Nicki Minaj collab “Princess Diana.”

Here are the seven best moments of Taylor Swift’s second night at MetLife Stadium.

Roger Waters Calls Criticism Over Berlin Concerts a ‘Smear’ Campaign: ‘I Will Continue to Condemn Injustice’

Roger Waters is addressing widespread backlash he’s received after wearing a Nazi-like uniform during his recent concerts in Berlin.

On Friday (May 26), the Pink Floyd co-founder shared a statement on social media about his controversial May 17-18 shows at Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz Arena, which have prompted an investigation by German police.

“My recent performance in Berlin has attracted bad faith attacks from those who want to smear and silence me because they disagree with my political views and moral principles,” Waters wrote in his statement, which was posted on Twitter.

“The elements of my performance that have been questioned are quite clearly a statement in opposition to fascism, injustice, and bigotry in all its forms. Attempts to portray those elements as something else are disingenuous and politically motivated.”

During his Berlin shows, Waters wore a costume reminiscent of a Nazi SS soldier’s uniform — a long black coat with a red armband — while pointing a fake rifle at the crowd. In his statement, the singer/bassist said that the “depiction of an unhinged fascist demagogue” has been featured in his past live performances since the release of the 1980 film The Wall.

Following the concerts, Berlin police opened an investigation of Waters on suspicion of incitement over the Nazi-style uniform. Authorities said the costume could constitute glorification, justification or approval of Nazi rule and therefore a disturbance of the public peace, the Associated Press reports.

“I have spent my entire life speaking out against authoritarianism and oppression wherever I see it,” Waters wrote in reaction. “When I was a child after the war, the name of Anne Frank was often spoken in our house, she became a permanent reminder of what happens when fascism is left unchecked. My parents fought the Nazis in World War II, with my father paying the ultimate price.”

Waters concluded his statement, writing, “Regardless of the consequences of the attacks against me, I will continue to condemn injustice and all those who perpetrate it.”

9 Best Moments of Taylor Swift’s First Night at MetLife on Her Eras Tour

“Oh, New Jersey, I feel absolutely fantastic right now.”

Taylor Swift brought her blockbuster Eras Tour — on track to net an estimated $590 million in ticket sales and become the biggest trek of her entire career — to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. on Friday (May 26) evening for the first of three sold-out shows at the massive venue.

The tour (which began in March in Glendale, Ariz., and moves on to Chicago after the Jersey dates before wrapping in August in California) is a three-hour marathon of Swift’s imposing catalog of pop, folk and country classics, which spans massive hits on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as deep-cut fan favorites.

After a muscular opening set from GAYLE and a crowd-pleasing performance by the ever-reliable Phoebe Bridgers, Swift took the stage to thunderous applause.

“There is one thing I dream of with the childlike wonder of a hundred birthdays – the first night of MetLife,” Swift told the crowd at the top of her set. And clearly, her Friday night concert for the New Jersey/New York crowd was a meaningful one for her – not only did she debut three new outfits, but she brought out three guest performers — and offered MetLife attendees an advance screening of the music video for “Karma” approximately an hour before it landed online.

From her marvelous surprise song choices to a moment when the audience surprised Swift to her flashy new threads, here are the best moments from night one of Taylor Swift’s first evening at MetLife on her Eras Tour.

Taylor Swift Debuts Music Video for Ice Spice ‘Karma’ Remix at MetLife Eras Tour Stop: Watch

Twenty-four hours after Taylor Swift debuted her Ice Spice-powered “Karma” remix, she’s unleashed the music video for the Midnights (Til Dawn Edition) collaboration at, of course, midnight.

The first lucky Swifties to see the video were the tens of thousands of fans at Friday’s (May 26) first of three Eras Tour stops at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. (And that wasn’t all: They also got the live debut of the remix when Ice Spice joined Swift as a special guest to end the night.)

The video is packed with stunning visuals, with Swift inside an hourglass that shifts sideways to turn into her perfectly lined cat eye, to Swift’s head lying on a cat curled up in the shape of the moon. Ice Spice gets in on the cinematography too, including her trademark red curls morphing into a fluffy cloud, rapping from a golden clamshell, and Ice and Taylor lassoing various celestial bodies. Swift even turns into a tree-covered mountain range in one scene.

The icy new remix is from the just-released Midnights (Til Dawn Edition), a deluxe version of her blockbuster November album that included the eight-week No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Anti-Hero.” In addition the new rap-infused “Karma,” Til Dawn also has a “More Lana Del Rey” version of “Snow on the Beach.” Some editions also include the new song “You’re Losing Me,” which is available on the CD version of the album for sale on-site at The Eras tour stops at MetLife Stadium this weekend and became available for digital purchase late Friday too.

Taylor Swift Brings Out Surprise Guest Ice Spice for ‘Karma’ Remix Live Debut

Less than a day after releasing the expanded new version of her Billboard 200-topping album Midnights, Taylor Swift took the stage at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Friday (May 26) for the first of three sold-out shows at the venue. Aside from a three-hour set full of massive hits and beloved deep cuts (which fans have come to expect on her blockbuster Eras Tour), Swift brought out a surprise guest who helped bring the night to a raucous close.

Ice Spice, who features on a remix of the kismet bop “Karma” from Midnights (Til Dawn Edition), came out at the end of the night to perform her verse alongside Swift.

The “Princess Diana” rapper made a royal entrance, emerging onstage from below. Ice and Swift strutted around the stage holding hands, with the rapper patting her hair confidently after delivering her verse. As confetti fell at the end of the concert, the pair had their arms around each other. Spice — who was raised in the Bronx, just across the Hudson River – seemed confident and in command as she played to the largest crowd of her burgeoning career.

Earlier in the night, Swift also surprised the crowd with the premiere of the cinematic music video for the “Karma” remix, and when she introduced the visuals, she explained how the collab with Ice came together.

“At the very beginning of the year, when I was just starting to train for this tour, I got reached out to by Ice Spice,” Swift said. “She reached out and said, ‘If you’d ever like to do a collab, I would love to.’ And what she didn’t know at the time is that when I was training for the tour, I was listening to pretty much exclusively just her music every single day. All day. … So I said, ‘Absolutely, when can we do it?’ So we immediately went into the studio and I just not only fell in love with her, but just decided she’s the entire future. … I’ve been around so many artists and so many artists just starting out, but I’ve never been around an artist who’s so prepared and curious and focused on what she wants.”

Prior to the “Karma” remix dropping, Swift praised Ice Spice’s artistry: “I’m a massive fan of this brilliant artist and after getting to know her I can confirm: she is THE ONE to watch.”

Spice covered Billboard magazine earlier this month and talked about her rapid rise to fame over the last two years. “Right now, I’m focused on music,” she told Billboard. “I’m still learning a lot, to be honest. But I’m so happy I’ve put in that time and that work — because it’s paying off.”

Swift plays two more dates at MetLife Stadium as part of her Eras Tour, which Billboard Boxscore reports is on track to be the biggest selling tour of her career.
