Lizzo Scraps Montreal Concert Due to Illness: ‘I think It’s The Flu’

Lizzo isn’t feeling special right now.

The celebrated singer scrapped her concert Thursday (May 4) at Montreal’s Centre Bell, due to illness.

It’s no ordinary sniffle. The Detroit native posted an apology on her socials just hours before showtime. “Montreal I’m so sorry but I physically cannot do the show. I promise we will honor your tickets,” reads her post on Instagram.

The award-winning singer also shared a video, in which she appears to be wrapped up in bed, with a mask over her face, clearly suffering.

After feeling unwell Wednesday night, she went to bed. “And I woke up this morning and its worse,” she remarks. “My body’s weak, and I have chills and my head hurts. Normally if it’s just a cold, I’d shower, I’ll eat, take some medicine and get better, but this is getting worse. I think it’s the flu. And I have to make the unfortunate decision to cancel today. I want to find a date to reschedule but I just can’t perform tonight. This is the second time I’ve had to cancel due to health in my entire career. And I will make it up to you, Montreal. So sorry.”

The next date on Lizzo’s current tour, in support of her 2022 LP Special, her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, is set for Saturday (May 6) at the XL Center in Hartford, CT.

The trek has been action-packed. So far, she’s used the platform of her concerts to protest anti-LGBTQ+ laws in Tennessee with help from several queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race, designed a custom tattoo for a fan mid-show, danced in a bikini in front of the famous St. Louis Arch and more.

Earlier in the week, Lizzo made an appropriately dramatic entrance at the 2023 Met Gala, wearing a sleek updo which paid homage to Audrey Hepburn.

Ed Sheeran’s ‘Subtract’ Has Arrived: Stream It Now

Ed Sheeran‘s final album in his mathematics series, Subtract, is officially available to stream as of Friday (May 5).

Related

Preceded by singles “Eyes Closed” and “Boat,” the album concludes a major chapter in Sheeran’s discography. Upon announcing the LP’s arrival, the British pop star revealed that its lyrical content and personal nature came as a result of personal tragedy in his life, namely his wife Cherry Seaborn developing a brain tumor while pregnant and his close friend Jamal Edwards passing away.

“I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air. As an artist I didn’t feel like I could credibly put a body of work into the world that didn’t accurately represent where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life,” he wrote via Instagram on March 1.

He continued, “This album is purely that. It’s opening the trapdoor into my soul. For the first time I’m not trying to craft an album people will like, I’m merely putting something out that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life. This is last February’s diary entry and my way of making sense of it. This is Subtract.”

The standard edition of the album contains a total of 14 tracks, whilst the CD and deluxe vinyl editions of the album contain 18 and 23 songs respectively.

Subtract also notably arrives less than 24 hours after Sheeran was found not liable of copying the chord structure of Marvin Gaye‘s 1973 classic “Let’s Get It On” in his 2014 track, “Thinking Out Loud.”

Here Are the Top 10 Most-Watched Super Bowl Halftime Shows

While the Super Bowl is one of the biggest television events in the United States every year, the star-studded halftime show is often what gets the most online attention.

In 2023, Rihanna returned to the stage for the first time in more than five years to perform at Super Bowl LVII at Glendale, Ariz.’s State Farm Stadium, and the hype surrounding the performance led to a history making accomplishment. With 121.017 million viewers, RiRi’s performance narrowly surpassed Katy Perry’s 2015 performance as the most-watched halftime show of all time.

Rihanna’s achievement comes after Nielsen revised this year’s original 118.7 million viewers “after a review that revealed encoding irregularities as well as issues with out-of-home measurement,” according to the Associated Press. (The revised report regarding the Super Bowl LVII game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles also made this year’s football match the most-watched Super Bowl in history with 115.1 million viewers.)

Over the years, a number of stars have passed the 100 million viewership mark, stretching all the way back to Black Eyed Peas’ 2011 performance. From Rihanna and Beyoncé to Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake, see below for the Super Bowl halftime shows with the all-time most viewership.

Post Malone to Receive Hal David Starlight Award at 2023 Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala

Post Malone is slated to receive the Hal David Starlight Award at the 2023 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Dinner, which will be held Thursday, June 15, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York.

SHOF Chairman Nile Rodgers said in a statement, “Over the last few years I have had the pleasure of watching Posty become one of the biggest artists in the world and he’s done it by writing phenomenal songs. Way before Post Malone was a superstar, he was a great songwriter, and this is his first step into the Songwriters Hall of Fame!”

According to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Hal David Starlight Award recipients are “gifted young songwriters who are making a significant impact in the music industry with their original songs.” The award is meant as a balance to the Johnny Mercer Award, which is a career capper for a legendary writer. Tim Rice is this year’s winner of the Johnny Mercer Award.

Post Malone is the third recipient of the Starlight Award who hails from the world of hip-hop, following Drake, the 2011 recipient, and Lil Nas X, who received the honor last year.

Post Malone, a Universal Music Publishing Group writer, has amassed 10 Grammy nominations – though he has yet to win. His nominations include three consecutive nods for record of the year, for “Rockstar” (featuring 21 Savage), “Sunflower” (a collab with Swae Lee) and “Circles.” The latter song was also nominated for song of the year – Post Malone’s only songwriting nod to date. Posty (real name: Austin Post) co-wrote that silky smash with Louis Bell, Adam Feeney, Kaan Gunesberk and Billy Walsh. He has also nabbed two album of the year nods for beerbongs & bentleys and Hollywood’s Bleeding.

“Rockstar,” “Sunflower” and “Circles” all reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, as did “Psycho” (featuring Ty Dolla $ign). Both of the aforementioned albums had long runs at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Inductees at the 52nd Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Dinner are Glen Ballard, Snoop Dogg, Gloria Estefan, Jeff Lynne, Teddy Riley and Liz Rose. (Sade Adu had to defer her induction due to a schedule change.)

Songwriters become eligible for SHOF induction 20 years after their first song gained wide exposure. None of the Starlight honorees (see complete list below) have yet been inducted, but many are expected to be as they reach that two-decade mark.

The Starlight Award is named in honor of Hal David, who teamed with Burt Bacharach to write dozens of pop hits from the late ‘50s to the early ‘70s. Bacharach and David were elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972 and received the Johnny Mercer Award in 1996. Their 1965 classic, “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” received the organization’s Towering Song award in 2004. It was voted into the National Recording Registry this year.

Bacharach and David received a trustees award from the Recording Academy in 1997. In 2012, they became the first songwriting team to win the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.

David was chairman of the Songwriters Hall of Fame from 2000-10, and served as chairman emeritus from 2010 until his death in 2012. He was awarded the organization’s first Visionary Leadership Award in 2011.

Tickets for the Songwriters Hall of Fame event begin at $2,000 each and are available through Buckley Hall Events, 914-579-1000, and SHOF@buckleyhallevents.com. Net proceeds from the event will go toward the Songwriters Hall of Fame programs. Songwriters Hall of Fame is a 501(c)3 organization. Contributions are fully tax-deductible as provided by law. The non-deductible portion of each ticket is $215.

Suga’s Agust D Project Debuts at No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Record Store Day Releases Rush Onto Chart

Agust D (an alias of BTS’ Suga) sees his solo debut studio effort D-Day bow at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated May 6), selling 122,000 copies in the United States in the week ending April 27, according to Luminate. That marks the fourth-largest sales week for an album in 2023.

D-Day is the first leader for Agust D, and he’s the second member of BTS to achieve a No. 1 on Top Album Sales. He follows Jimin, who bowed at No. 1 earlier this year with FACE (April 8-dated chart). BTS itself has notched six No. 1s on Top Albums Sales, most recently with the retrospective collection Proof in 2022.

Like many K-pop releases, the CD edition of D-Day was issued in collectible CD packages (seven total, including exclusives for Target, Walmart and the Weverse webstore) each containing a standard set of items and randomized elements (in this case, photo cards). It was also available as a standard digital download album, as well as three alternative cover digital download variants that were sold exclusively through the artist’s official webstore. Of D-Day’s first-week sales, 90% were CDs, while the remaining 10% were digital album downloads. The set was not available in any other retail format (such as vinyl or cassette).

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

Taylor Swift’s Record Store Day-exclusive vinyl release Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions launches at No. 3 on Top Album Sales with 75,000 sold – all from sales of its vinyl LP. It’s the single-largest sales week for an album on vinyl in 2023. It’s the 15th top 10 for Swift on Top Album Sales.

The live acoustic album, which was previously available only as bonus tracks on a deluxe digital and streaming edition of her Folklore studio album (released in 2020), was issued on vinyl LP (its first physical release of any kind) for Record Store Day (RSD) (April 22) at participating independent record stores. It was previously announced that Long Pond’s production run for Record Store Day would be 75,000 copies in the United States, and the set sold out instantly. It’s typical for many albums and singles to garner unique and limited edition runs exclusively for the annual independent record store day celebration.

Typically, high-profile Record Store Day-exclusive titles might have a production run of 10,000-to-20,000 in the United States. For Record Store Day 2022, there were 10 titles that had pressings ranging from 10,000 to 18,000, but nothing larger. For Record Store Day 2023, Swift’s Long Pond title had by far the largest production run of any RSD title. Pearl Jam’s live concert album Give Way had the second-biggest production run, with 15,500 vinyl LPs pressed.

Metallica’s former leader 72 Seasons falls 1-3 in its second week on Top Album Sales with 25,000 sold (down 81%).

Pearl Jam’s Give Way starts at No. 4 with 22,000 copies sold – representing vinyl, CD and digital download sales combined. The set made its retail debut on both vinyl LP (one set available at indie retailers and one sold through the band’s fan club) and CD (exclusive to indie stores), as well as a digital download. The album was recorded in 1998 during the group’s Yield Tour. Give Way is the 17th top 10 effort on Top Album Sales for Pearl Jam.

Swift has a second title in the top 10, as her chart-topping Midnights dips 4-5 with a little over 15,000 sold (up 20%). Melanie Martinez’s former No. 1 Portals falls 3-6 with 14,000 (up 5%), Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. is a non-mover at No. 7 with 11,000 sold (up 25%) and Boygenius’ The Record climbs 13-8 with 10,000 (up 47%).

Coming in at No. 9 is a re-entry from The Cure with its live album Show, and Stevie Nicks debuts at No. 10 with Bella Donna: Live 1981.

Show’s sales (just over 10,000) are driven almost entirely from a new picture disc vinyl release of the album for Record Store Day. The set was originally released widely in 1993 and initially peaked at No. 42. Show was recorded during The Cure’s 1992 Wish album tour.

For Nicks, Bella Donna: Live 1981 made its debut as stand-alone album for Record Store Day, and only on vinyl. It sold 10,000 copies. Its tracks were originally commercially released on an album as part of a deluxe edition of Nicks’ 1981 studio album Bella Donna, released in 2016. The Bella Donna: Live 1981 album was recorded during Nicks’ White Winged Dove Tour on  Dec. 13, 1981.

In the week ending April 27, there were 2.927 million albums sold in the U.S. (up 44.4% compared to the previous week). Of that sum, physical albums (CDs, vinyl LPs, cassettes, etc.) comprised 2.583 million (up 54.3%) and digital albums comprised 339,000 (down 2.8%).

There were 760,000 CD albums sold in the week ending April 27 (up 9.6% week-over-week) and 1.809 vinyl albums sold (up 87.5%). Year-to-date CD album sales stand at 11.224 million (up 4.9% compared to the same time frame a year ago) and year-to-date vinyl album sales total 16.296 million (up 28.7%).

Overall year-to-date album sales total 33.707 million (up 10.9% compared to the same year-to-date time frame a year ago). Year-to-date physical album sales stand at 27.699 million (up 17.8%) and digital album sales total 6.009 million (down 12.5%).

Taylor Swift & Matty Healy Are Rumored to Be Dating & Fans Are Having a Field Day

Taylor Swift is single, which means that the dating rumors have begun to flood in. Since her split from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn became public last month, the “Bejeweled” singer has already been linked to her “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)(10-Minute Version)” short film star Dylan O’Brien, Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso and even Bradley Cooper.

On Thursday (May 4), new rumors hit the Internet that Swift is dating The 1975 frontman Matty Healy, according to The Sun, who allegedly found a source that noted that the two are “both massively proud and excited about this relationship.”

Swift and Healy have been longtime friends, with the 12-time Grammy winner surprising fans during the band’s concert at the O2 Arena in London in January to cover The 1975’s “The City” and perform “Anti-Hero” for the first time.

Back in October, Healy and his bandmate George Daniel shut down rumors of a collaboration with Swift in an interview with BBC Radio 1. “Oh no, we’re not [working with Swift],” Healy explained. “We’d love to. Love to work with Taylor Swift. Love Taylor Swift. Think she’s one of the best songwriters.”

He jokingly added, “She’s probably sat there watching this, pining for a feature on a 1975 track.”

Of course, the dating speculation is just rumors, and neither Swift nor Healy spoken out publicly about the situation. However, that didn’t stop fans from poking fun on Twitter, sharing hilarious tweets about the possibility of a romance between the two. See the best reactions below.

Here’s What Carey Hart Thinks About P!nk Writing Songs About Him

P!nk has never been one to shy away from discussing her relationship with her husband, Carey Hart — in her music or otherwise. And thankfully, Hart doesn’t seem to be fazed by it, as he revealed during his Thursday (May 4) appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

During P!nk’s recent appearance on the talk show earlier in the week, Clarkson asked about Hart’s thoughts on her songwriting. “You have to take in Carey’s amount of feelings he can handle and how much he is actually thinking about the words I’m saying or listening at all. I think he’s fine,” P!nk told the host. “There’s one on the new album … it was a hard day. I played it for him, because that’s fair. He should know what’s being said about him in the world. And he just started giggling and he’s like, ‘Well, you’re welcome.’”

Related

P!nk was correct in her assumption, as Hart told Clarkson that he tends to be unflinching when it comes to his wife’s music.

“We’ve been together for 21 years. I have very thick skin, so very little affects me, and I don’t know exactly what day she’s talking about specifically. It was probably just the temperature,” the former professional motocross racer joked with Clarkson on Thursday.

P!nk’s most recent album, Trustfall, was released in February. The set earned the pop star her ninth top 10 album on the Billboard 200, as it peaked at No. 2 on the all-genre albums chart.

Watch Hart talk about being referenced in P!nk’s music in the video above.

Suga’s Agust D Album ‘D-Day’ Launches at No. 1 on Top Rap Albums Chart

BTS member Suga, who performs solo material under the alias Agust D, achieves his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart as D-Day opens in the top slot of the list dated May 6. The project starts with 140,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 27, according to Luminate.

Album sales contribute most of D-Day’s first-week activity, with 122,000 copies sold. The six-figure haul makes D-Day the best-selling album of the week across all-genres. Streaming activity comprises 12,500 units (equaling 17.9 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks), while the remaining 5,500 are from track-equivalent units. (One unit equals the following levels of consumption: one album sale, 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams for a song on the album.)

Related

Like many K-pop releases, the CD edition of D-Day was issued in collectible CD packages (seven total, including exclusives for Target, Walmart and the Weverse webstore) each containing a standard set of items and randomized elements (in this case, photo cards). It was also available as a standard digital download album, as well as three alternative cover digital download variants that were sold exclusively through the artist’s official webstore. Of D-Day’s first-week sales, 90% were CDs, while the remaining 10% were digital album downloads. The set was not available in any other retail format (such as vinyl or cassette).

D-Day gives Agust D a first champ on Top Rap Albums upon his second visit to the list. The 10-track D-2 mixtape debuted and peaked at No. 9 in June 2020. Elsewhere, D-Day enters at No. 1 on the World Albums chart and at No. 2 on the all-genre Billboard 200, behind only Morgan Wallen’s now eight-week champ, One Thing at a Time.

In addition to a first rap No. 1, Agust D also claims his first top 10 solo hit on the Hot Rap Songs chart as “Haegeum” begins at No. 9. The track sold 32,000 copies in the tracking week, with 23,000 of that from digital retailers; the latter figure allows for a No. 1 launch on the Rap Digital Song Sales chart and gives Agust D his fourth career champ there. “Haegeum” was also the week’s most-streamed D-Day track, with 4.6 million clicks. As Suga, the rapper first made the Hot Rap Songs’ top 10 with “Girl of My Dreams,” a collaboration with Juice WRLD, in December 2021.
