Eurovision Semifinal: 10 Acts Advance, Including From Sweden & Finland

LIVERPOOL, U.K. — The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 kicked off Tuesday with a jubilant party of elaborate PVC costumes, soaring rock ballads and cheesy Euro pop, as contestants competed in the first of two semi-finals to determine which 20 acts would move on to Saturday’s Grand Final.

The semi-final at the 11,000-capacity M&S Bank Arena, standing on Liverpool’s waterfront next to the River Mersey, marked the official start of the annual competition. The 10 acts moving on were Croatia, Moldova, Switzerland, Finland, Czechia, Israel, Portugal, Sweden, Serbia and Norway. That means the Netherlands, Malta, Latvia, Ireland and Azerbaijan were eliminated.

The United Kingdom is hosting this year’s Eurovision Song Contest – famous for introducing ABBA to the world – on behalf of war-torn Ukraine, which won last year’s competition with “Stefania” by Ukrainian rap-folk band Kalush Orchestra (the U.K. finished second through Sam Ryder’s “Space Man”).

It is the first time that the U.K. has held the contest in 25 years with Liverpool – whose illustrious music history includes The Beatles and Echo & the Bunnymen — fully embracing its role as host city.

Memorable highlights (although not always for the right reasons) included Croatia’s Let 3, who stripped down to their underwear as they wielded giant missile props for their song “Mama ŠČ!”, and Israel’s Noa Kirel with her marauding dance pop track “Unicorn.”

Some of the night’s biggest cheers went to two of this year’s favorites to take home the main prize: Sweden’s Loreen, who won the competition in 2012 and performed “Tattoo” on Tuesday; and Finnish rapper Käärijä, who sung his catchy song “Cha Cha Cha,” semi-topless, wearing only black spiky trousers and bright green Incredible Hulk-style sleeves.

In a mid-show interval of the two-and-a-half-hour show Rita Ora also performed a medley of her biggest hits, including singles “Anywhere,” “I Will Never Let You Down” and Praising You.”

Other non-competition performers included Liverpool singer Rebecca Ferguson and Ukraine’s Alyosha in a duet of Duran Duran’s “Ordinary World,” which they dedicated to refugees who had been forced to leave their country.

The semi-final was hosted by British TV personality and singer Alesha Dixon, “Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham and Ukrainian singer Julia Sanina — who opened the show with her band The Hardkiss. It was broadcast live on television in the U.K. and throughout Europe.

In total, 37 countries are taking part in this year’s contest. Ukraine automatically qualifies for the final as 2022 winners, as do the so-called ‘big five’: the U.K., France, Germany, Italy and Spain, who all get a free pass to the main show because of their financial contributions to the event.

Viewers in participating countries vote to decide the winner, although people can’t vote for an act from their own country. The second semi-final takes place on Thursday when another 16 acts will perform.

In the runup to the competition, Liverpool has been transformed into a vibrant display of Eurovision banners and Ukrainian flags.

Ahead of Thursday’s semi-final, the English National Opera put on a free show at the purpose-built fan village on Liverpool’s Pier Head, where they were joined by a series of former Eurovision contestants, including singer Ruslana, who won for Ukraine in 2004, and international opera stars who performed classical arrangements of some of the contest’s past hits.

“I bring one message: Listen my sisters and brothers, we need to stop this bloody terrible war as soon as possible,” Ruslana said. “And I ask you, just help Ukraine to win. Because we are fighting for freedom. We are fighting for light. The light of human heart.”

It’s Small Business Week, and Kamala Harris is celebrating by supporting the record store industry.

The Vice President stepped out of Home Rule Records in Washington, D.C., this week and stopped to tell photographers all about her new purchases. “Do you know music?” she teased in a video posted to her Instagram page on Tuesday (May 9).

She goes on to pull out a record by Charlie Mingus, whom she deems “one of the greatest jazz performers ever;” Roy Ayers’ Everybody Loves the Sunshine, one of her “favorite albums of all time;” and Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald’s “beautiful” collaborative 1959 album, Porgy and Bess.

“Mingus, Ayers, Fitzgerald and Armstrong—if you don’t know, now you know!” Harris captioned the post.

Priyanka Chopra Reveals Her Favorite Song on the Jonas Brothers’ New Album

Priyanka Chopra spilled the tea on the Jonas Brothers‘ new music on Tuesday (May 9) in an interview promoting her movie Love Again.

“I love the new album so much,” the actress told The Hollywood Reporter. “And there’s a song called ‘Walls’ — which they’ve performed a few times — which just goes off especially live. So I love [that song].”

Indeed, Nick Jonas‘ wife was on her feet and visibly excited when the band performed the bombastic closing track — which will feature Jon Bellion on The Album — during the final night of their intimate, five-night run on Broadway — where the brothers also debuted as-yet-unreleased songs like “Montana Sky,” “Vacation Eyes,” “Celebrate!” and “Sail Away.”

During the joint interview with co-star Sam Heughan, Chopra dished on her pop star hubby’s hilarious cameo in the film as a douchey gym bro her character meets on a dating app. “I may have broken character so many times,” she confessed. “I was a complete, utter unprofessional on set that day. And usually my work ethic is very important to me, so… But it was just so funny and Nick really was, like, trying to figure out how this douchbag guy would, like, walk or talk or admire himself. And it was just little choices he made in the scenes, like, I was dying. It was very funny.”

Meanwhile, the JoBros’ The Album is set to be released Friday (May 12), the same day the siblings will take over Rockefeller Plaza in New York City to kickstart TODAY‘s Citi Summer Concert Series.

Watch Chopra talk about “Walls” and working with Nick on the set of Love Again below.

Watch Kelly Clarkson Deliver Soulful Rendition of Eva Cassidy’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’

Kelly Clarkson took fans back to the ’90s for the Tuesday (May 9) episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, performing the Eva Cassidy version of Simon & Garfunkel‘s signature hit “Bridge Over Trouble” for the opening Kellyoke segment.

Accompanied by her band, the three-time Grammy winner put her own spin on the Cassidy’s version of the classic track, using her signature belt to hit flawless high notes and stunning vibrato moments.

“When you’re weary/ Feeling small/ When tears are in your eyes/ I’ll dry them all/ I’m on your side/ Oh, when times get rough/ And friends just can’t be found/ Like a bridge over troubled water/ I will lay me down/ Like a bridge over troubled water/ I will lay me down,” she powerfully sang on the intro verse and well-known chorus.

“Bridge Over Trouble Water” was originally released as the second single from Simon and Garfunkel’s fifth and final studio album of the same name. Released in 1970, the Paul Simon-penned track has become a signature for the folk duo — upon its release, the track spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and a cumulatively 14 weeks on the chart. The track is their group’s most successful to date.

Cassidy’s version of the folk classic arrived in 1996 and appeared on her album, Live at Blues Alley. The LP was recorded live at the Washington, D.C.’s Blues Alley nightclub in January 1996.

Colde’s RM collaboration “Don’t Ever Say Love Me” takes the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s May 13-dated Hot Trending Songs chart, powered by Twitter.

Billboard’s Hot Trending charts, powered by Twitter, track global music-related trends and conversations in real-time across Twitter, viewable over either the last 24 hours or past seven days. A weekly, 20-position version of the chart, covering activity from Friday through Thursday of each week, posts alongside Billboard’s other weekly charts on Billboard.com each Tuesday, with the latest tracking period running April 28-May 4.

“Don’t Ever Say Love Me” was released May 4 after being teased for a few days on Korean singer-songwriter Colde’s social media, with some chatter owed to the featured appearance from BTS’ RM.

Concurrently, “Don’t Ever Say Love Me” debuts at No. 4 on the World Digital Song Sales chart thanks to 2,000 downloads, according to Luminate, with more chart appearances possible on the May 20-dated surveys upon the song’s first full seven weeks of tracking. It’s Colde’s second appearance on the chart, following his appearance on RM’s “Hectic,” which peaked at No. 6 in December 2022. As for RM, it’s his seventh appearance, which includes a No. 1 in “No.2” the same month.

“Don’t Ever Say Love Me” is one of eight songs from Colde’s new album Love Part 2. Another, for “Heartbreak Club” (featuring LEE CHANHYUK), received a music video treatment on May 4 as well.

Colde and RM reign over Jack Harlow, whose “They Don’t Love It” bows at No. 2 on Hot Trending Songs. “They Don’t Love It” is the breakout hit from the rapper’s surprise new album Jackman., which concurrently debuts at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 with 36,000 equivalent album units earned, as previously reported. The song itself is also the Billboard Hot 100’s Hot Shot Debut at No. 54, thanks to 8.6 million official U.S. streams and 1,000 downloads.

Nos. 3-5 on Hot Trending Songs are taken up by music from the late Gordon Lightfoot, who died May 1 at age 84. “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” a No. 2 hit on the Hot 100 in November 1976 for Lightfoot, starts at No. 3, followed by his lone Hot 100 No. 1, 1974’s “Sundown” (No. 4) and “If You Could Read My Mind” at No. 5 (also No. 5 on the Hot 100 in February 1971).

The National Notch Fifth Top Rock & Alternative Albums No. 1 in a Row

The National rules Billboard’s Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart dated May 13 for a fifth total and consecutive time with its new album, First Two Pages of Frankenstein.

The release bows with 32,000 equivalent album units earned in its first week, April 28-May 4, including 24,000 via album sales, according to Luminate.

With 15,000 copies sold on vinyl, the set also debuts atop Vinyl Albums, where it’s the group’s fourth No. 1.

The Matt Berninger-fronted band’s Top Rock & Alternative Albums No. 1 streak dates to High Violet in May 2010. In between that set and First Two Pages of Frankenstein, the five-piece reigned with three other sets, also for a week each: Trouble Will Find Me (June 2013), Sleep Well Beast (September 2017) and I Am Easy to Find (June 2019).

The new set also bows at No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts.

Concurrently, the LP’s “The Alcott,” featuring Taylor Swift, enters Hot Rock & Alternative Songs at No. 13, thanks to 2.9 million official U.S. streams and 4,000 sold. The song is the album’s next single at adult alternative radio.

The set’s lead single, “Tropic Morning News,” led the Adult Alternative Airplay chart for a career-high five weeks, beginning on the March 18-dated list. It became the band’s second No. 1, among five top 10s, on the tally, after two-week ruler “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness” in August 2017.

“News” also hit No. 25 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart and No. 28 on Alternative Airplay.
