Juanes Breaks Down 5 Essential Tracks on New ‘Vida Cotidiana’ Album

In Vida Cotidiana, his first studio album with completely original music in four years, Juanes reflects on his relationship with his wife and children and the problems that affect his country.

They’re not particularly new subjects for the Colombian rocker known for his deep and honest lyrics about love and social commitment. But at 50, his introspective journey is more mature and fascinating.

With 11 songs including the previously released singles “Gris,” “Amores Prohibidos,” “Ojalá” and “Veneno,” and a return to his rock roots with electric guitar tinged with funk, son and cumbia, among other rhythms, Vida Cotidiana (which means Everyday Life) debuts Thursday (May 18) at 8 p.m. (EST) under Universal Music Latino. At the same time, the official video for “Cecilia” will be released, a Juan Luis Guerra-assisted song dedicated to Juanes’ wife, the actress and model Karen Cecilia Martínez. (The clip, directed by María Camila Calle and shot on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, stars Martínez and their daughters Luna and Paloma, who are joined at the end by Juanes and son Dante to complete the sweet family picture.)

Produced by Juanes and Sebastian Krys, Vida Cotidiana was born during the pandemic, when the singer of “La Camisa Negra” and “A Dios Le Pido” — accustomed to spending long periods away from home due to his musical career — was for the first time living with his wife and children 24 hours a day, in many occasions going through painful moments of frustration and learning.

“It’s been a very experiential album,” Juanes says to Billboard Español, speaking in Spanish from Medellín. “Normally I travel all the time, so [being home] was very nice, but on the other hand we obviously had differences and we had situations with the children, well, a normal life, literally, the everyday life. So it was very emotionally charged, but also very important.”

In addition to Guerra, Juanes invited other artists to help him write. Puerto Rican singer-songwriter GALE assisted him in the lyrics of the pop-rock “Ojalá,” Tommy Torres on the reggae-infused song “El Abrazo,” and Cuban poet Alexis Díaz Pimienta on “Mayo,” a song inspired by the marches that led to violent situations in Colombia in recent years during the month of May (when Labor Day is celebrated there.) Another compelling song, “Canción Desaparecidad”, about the disappeared in Colombia, was recorded with Mabiland.

“It’s impossible to get anywhere alone,” says Juanes, who also used the confinement during the pandemic to set up sort of a virtual “university” at home, taking guitar lessons with Tomo Fujita from Berklee College of Music, harmony with Guillermo Vadalá, singing with coach Eric Vetro, and poetry
with Díaz Pimienta (hence their collaboration). The result, he says with satisfaction, is a “more elevated” production.

Below, Juanes breaks down five essential tracks on Vida Cotidiana, in his own words.

“Gris”

“Grey” is a totally indie-rock song … It’s the song that opens the album and it’s a song that talks about the peak moment, let’s say, of my crisis with Cecilia at that time. It was a discussion in which I felt that there was nothing left to do, I felt that my relationship had ended and for me it was very sad. I was angry with myself and frustrated, in a very dark place. The craziest thing is that this song came out. Sometimes I listen to it and I’m like, “My God, I love this song, but I can’t believe what I went through to make it. I can’t even explain it.”

“Cecilia”

“Cecilia” is the answer to that song (“Gris,”) — it’s where I tell my wife, “No more, let’s not fight anymore, it’s not worth it. If we love each other, let’s give this a spin, let’s dance together.” That is why “Cecilia” is happy, tropical. It has son, and it has Juan Luis, who is a blessing. My wife is as much a fan of Juan Luis as I am, or more. I had worked with Juan Luis before on a song of his called “La Calle” and he had produced one of my records, but I never had the opportunity to do one of my songs with Juan Luis before. It was super exciting, really. [His contribution to the lyrics can be felt] in a very particular part that says: [Juanes sings] “I feel the air run out if you stop being my wife.” And he said to me: “No Juanes, no. Your wife always has to be your girlfriend. He changed ‘wife’ to ‘girlfriend’. And the truth is, he is right.”

“Canción Desaparecida”

“Canción Desaparecida” (Missing Song) is a song I did with Mabiland, a very cool girl from the Chocó region in the Colombian Pacific, from a city called Quibdó — a very complex city. She lives here in Medellín and does kind of R&B, but she also raps. “Canción Desaparecida” talks about the disappeared in Colombia, who have reached alarming numbers, and in the last three years many stories have emerged about why this happened. There are stories of ex-policemen, ex-guerrillas, ex-paramilitaries, ex-military, and some very terrifying things have been coming to light. The subject caught my attention, I began to investigate and well, I ended up writing the song. We recorded the video here too, it was directed by Kacho López, and it’s also tough, like the song.

“Vida Cotidiana”

“‘Vida Cotidiana” is a song that I wrote for my daughter Luna, who is the eldest. At that moment during COVID she was 17 years old and I was having this tremendous clash with her because I didn’t understand that she wanted to be independent. I wanted to continue being the scolding father and we began to argue a lot over differences, and then I argued with my wife over differences, to the point that I became indifferent to [Luna], invisible. And that killed me, because I couldn’t [accept] as a dad that I couldn’t connect with my daughter. I was terribly sad, but it was also my bad, it was my fault, because I didn’t know how to interpret what was happening to me. This song is that story.

“Veneno”

“Veneno” (Venom) is a song that I really like because it evokes a bit of the world of funk that I love, but also because the lyrics talk about toxic relationships that are so important, that we experience daily in our personal relationships, and also at work sometimes. I feel that this is like a poison that travels inside you and eats away your soul, up to a point where you have to make the decision and say ‘no more, this is not going to hurt me anymore, I have to come out stronger from here and get over me’. The video was directed by María Camila Calle, who is a director from here in Medellín, and stars Dante, who is my 13-year-old son. It has been very special to work with them on this project.

Cazzu & Santa Fe Klan Notch First No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay Chart With Los Angeles Azules Collab

Cazzu and Santa Fe Klan check off a career milestone, each scoring their first No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart as “Tú y Tú,” with Los Ángeles Azules, rises 3-1 to lead the May 20-dated survey. The new leader yields both Cazzu and Santa Fe Klan’s first champ in their maiden chart appearance.

“Tú y Tú,” released via SeiTrack/Disa/UMLE on March 10, takes over Regional Mexican Airplay in its eighth week after a 28% boost in audience impressions, to 8.5 million, earned in the U.S. during the May 5-11 tracking week, according to Luminate.

As “Tú y Tú” rises to the top of the ranking, Argentinian Cazzu and Mexican Santa Fe Klan become the first artists to claim a No. 1 in their maiden chart performance among the nine tracks that have crowned Regional Mexican Airplay in 2023. The last artist to pick up a first No. 1 in a first attempt was Mario Bautista, as “Brindo” with Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizárraga led for one week on June 11, 2022. Previously, Eden Muñoz completed the deed with “Chale!” (May 21, 2022).

“Tú y Tú” ascends 3-1 and sends Grupo Marca Registrada and Grupo Frontera’s “Di Que Sí” to No. 6 after its three-week domination, with a 39% dip in audience (to 5.2 million).

“Tú” also brings Los Ángeles Azules back to No. 1. The cumbia sonidera ensemble last ranked first through the three-week ruler “Nunca Es Suficiente,” with Natalia Lafourcade, in early 2019. In between, the group collected five top 10s, including the No. 2-peaking “Amor a Primera Vista,” with Belinda and Lao Ebratt, featuring Horacio Palencia, in August 2019.

Elsewhere, “Tú” continues its progress on the all-genre Latin Airplay chart, reaching its No. 5 high.

Christian Nodal’s 18th Top 10: Back on Regional Mexican Airplay, Christian Nodal cracks the top 10 barrier as “Un Cumbión Dolido” rallies 24-4.

With a 131% bump in audience impressions, to 5.6 million, earned during the same tracking week, “Un Cumbión” takes the Greatest Gainer honors of the week. Thanks to the radio support, Nodal picks up his 18th top 10, the fourth-most among regional Mexican soloists, trailing only Marco Antonio Solis’ 30 top 10s and Gerardo Ortiz and Vicente Fernandez’s 24.

“Cumbión” likewise climbs to a new peak on Latin Airplay, ascending 37-13.

Taylor Lautner Samples ‘Dear John’ & Jokes Again About ‘Praying’ for John Mayer

Dear John, Taylor Lautner is still praying for you. One day after saying he was keeping John Mayer in his thoughts ahead of the July 7 release of Taylor Swift‘s Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) — which is bound to include re-recordings of scathing tracks believed to be about the guitarist — the Twilight actor has now taken it a step further.

Related

In a new TikTok, Lautner once again joked that he’s going to “#prayforjohn” and filmed himself literally getting down on his knees, clasping his hands in prayer. He also paired the video with Swift’s 2010 ballad “Dear John,” a nearly seven-minute song about a toxic, power-imbalanced relationship with a much older man, widely assumed to be Mayer.

The hilarious TikTok follows Lautner’s appearance Tuesday (May 16) on the Today show with his wife, who’s also named Taylor Lautner and goes by Tay. The couple tied the knot about six months ago, and they now share a podcast together called The Squeeze, but many years ago, the actor and Swift were an item. The two stars first came together on the set of 2010 film Valentine’s Day, and Lautner went on to inspire another track on Speak Now, “Back to December,” following their breakup.

“I think it’s a great album,” Lautner reflected on Today. “Yeah, I feel safe. Praying for John.”

By “safe,” he means that he’ll likely be exempt from an onslaught of Swifties sending jokes and hate comments to him once Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) drops. That’s because he comes across better on “Back to December” than some of Swift’s other exes do in her songs — such as Jake Gyllenhaal, for instance, who became a target after Red (Taylor’s Version) was released in 2021.

J Balvin & Bad Bunny Tie Ozuna’s Billion Views Club Record on YouTube

J Balvin and Bad Bunny have each locked in their 13th video entry in YouTube’s Billion Views Club, the video platform announced Wednesday (May 17).

The two stars have now tied the record Ozuna previously held on his own. All three reggaeton acts have become the artists with the most entries in the Billion Views Club as lead, featured artist or collaborator.

Balvin and Bunny achieved the milestone with their 2017 collaborative effort “Si Tu Novio Te Deja Sola (If Your Boyfriend Leaves You Alone),” a tropical, groovy, trap fusion with cheeky lyrics that put Bad Bunny on the radar. The vibrant music video, filmed in the captivating landscapes of Puerto Rico, was uploaded to YouTube on March 3, 2017.

In 2022, J Balvin reclaimed his crown after his Black Eyed Peas-assisted “Ritmo (Bad Boys for Life)” video entered the club. He broke the tie he had with Justin Bieber, who currently has 11 titles with more than a billion views.

Earlier this year, however, Ozuna nabbed the crown notching two new entries with “Síguelo Bailando” and “Diles.” The latter — a collaboration with Bunny, Farruko, Árcangel, and Ñengo Flow, also became Bad Bunny’s 12th entry in the Billion Views Club.

Ozuna’s next video to hit one billion views will likely be “El Farsante” (977 million views at press time). Balvin’s next contender is “Say My Name” with David Guetta and Bebe Rexha (982 million views). Bad Bunny’s next potential clip to reach the milestone viewership number is his feature on Nacho and Yandel’s “Bailame Remix” (975 million views).

With the new entry into the Billion Views Club, Balvin is now at No. 37 on YouTube’s Global Top Artists chart, whereas Bad Bunny lands at No. 6.

Adam Levine Shares a Racy Photo of Behati Prinsloo on Her 35th Birthday

Adam Levine is celebrating Behati Prinsloo’s birthday by reminding the world just how gorgeous his wife is.

Related

In honor of the Victoria’s Secret model’s 35th trip around the sun, the Maroon 5 frontman took to his Instagram Story Tuesday (May 16) to share a topless photo of Prinsloo holding one of the three kids they share together. Taken from behind, the picture cuts off the Calirosa Tequila co-founder’s face, showing just her elegant back, low-cut jeans and white bikini bottoms.

On her left hip, Prinsloo carries one of her babies, whose face is also out of frame. She and Levine welcomed a third child earlier this year, and are also parents to daughters Dusty Rose, who’s 6, and Gio Rose, 5.

“Happy birthday baby,” the “Moves Like Jagger” singer captioned the photo.

On her Story, Prinsloo shared glimpses of how she’s spending her big day. She started her morning with a breakfast of birthday doughnuts, enjoyed some cake later on and spent time with Levine — who holds a bundle of “Happy Birthday” balloons in two photos shared by the model.

“Overwhelmed with the birthday love!!!” she wrote. “THANK U ALL.”

She and the 44-year-old musician have been going strong since tying the knot in 2014, save for a hiccup in September when Instagram model Sumner Stroh claimed she had been involved with the musician. He denied having an affair, but apologized for exchanging “inappropriate” messages with Stroh.

Prinsloo has spent much of this year supporting Levine in Las Vegas, where Maroon 5 has been playing shows as part of a 16-date residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM.

Last week, it was announced that the band is planning to drop its first single since 2021, “Middle Ground,” on Friday (May 19). Four days later, Levine will return to The Voice to perform the track live for the first time.
