1 Dead, Dozens Injured After Storm Causes Roof Collapse at Morbid Angel Concert in Illinois

One person is dead and dozens more were injured after a severe storm caused the roof to collapse during a heavy metal concert at the Apollo Theatre in Belvidere, Ill., on Friday night (March 31).

About 260 music fans were in attendance for a concert featuring Morbid Angel and other bands when 90 mph winds blew through the area and caused the historic venue’s roof to cave in. One person was killed and 28 others were injured, five of them severely, according to the Associated Press.

“Tonights show is Canceled due to a Tornado that hit the Venue, and caused the roof, over the area in-front of the stage, and marquee to collapse,” Morbid Angel wrote in a Facebook post on Friday.

“We ask anyone who is still traveling to the venue to please seek shelter and stay safe. We are currently sheltering in place, and want to extend our support and hope that everyone at the show tonight is safe. Right now our focus is on making sure everyone in the venue tonight is ok and gets home.”

Concert-goers in attendance at the 1,500-capacity venue reportedly rushed to lift the collapsed part of the ceiling and help others out of the wreckage.

“They dragged someone out from the rubble, and I sat with him and I held his hand and I was (telling him) ‘It’s going to be OK.’ I didn’t really know much else what to do,” Gabrielle Lewellyn, who was in attendance, told WTVO-TV.

Belvidere police chief Shane Woody described the scene at Apollo Theatre as “absolute chaos.”

“When officers are first on the scene, when the fire department and first responders get here, they do the best they can to control the chaos as much as possible,” Woody said, CBS Chicago reports. “But ultimately, we go in, and ultimately try and find people, and save as many people as we possibly can — and bring them to safety as best as we can.”

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also tweeted on Friday, “My administration is closely monitoring the roof collapse at the Apollo Theatre in Belvidere tonight. I’ve been in touch with officials for updates and to direct any available resources we can.”

From career milestones and new music releases to major announcements and more, Billboard editors highlight the latest news buzz in Latin music every week. Here’s what happened in the Latin music world this week.

Sech’s Musical Homerun

Sech teamed up with Corona, the official beer of Major League Baseball (MLB), to release a new version of the ballpark classic “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”—but with a Latin twist. Backed by a playful, uptempo beat, the remixed “Llevame al Juego de Beisbol” maintains the ballpark anthem’s lyrics intact but sung completely in Spanish. “As a kid growing up in Panama, I was surrounded by a love and deep respect for the game from a young age,” Sech said in a statement. “Being able to work with an iconic brand like Corona and add my creativity to a cherished seventh-inning tradition is a truly special experience. I am so proud to have made something that represents my culture and that of so many of the players on the field.” The track debuted in select ballparks across the country and will be played throughout the opening week of the 2023 season.

Bad Bunny at GLAAD Awards

Bad Bunny was awarded the GLAAD Vanguard Award at the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards on Thurs., March 30th in Los Angeles. The award, which honors “media professionals who have made a significant difference in promoting the equality and acceptance of LGBTQ people,” was presented to the Puerto Rican artist by fellow colleague Ricky Martin. As an artist who has dressed in drag (“Yo Perreo Sola”), kissed a man on stage, and expressed many times that his fashion-forward style has no gender, Benito received the coveted recognition for his advocacy and outspoken allyship for the LGBTQ community. Taylor Swift continued her history-making Eras Tour on Friday night (March 31), kicking off three shows through Sunday in Arlington, Texas.

Leading up to the night, local news outlets made a slew of announcements that urged citizens to beware of Eras Tour-induced traffic jams and parking issues in Arlington, which sits right in between Dallas and Fort Worth and boasts most of the metroplex’s major amusements, including Globe Life Field, Six Flags Over Texas and the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium — where Swift performed — but many concertgoers seemingly avoided the regular rush by arriving early, planting themselves in line for merchandise and entrance to the concert.
