Joshua Bassett Assures He’s ‘Better Than I Have Ever Been’ After Sparking Concern With Religious Posts

Joshua Bassett has a message for fans who are worried about his well-being: Don’t be. In a series of posts on his Instagram Story, the 22-year-old singer-songwriter addressed concerns over some of his previous tweets — in which he abruptly professed his Christian beliefs — and stated that he’s better than ever since finding peace in religion.

“For those concerned about me be sure of this: i’m better than i have ever been,” he wrote Sunday night (Jan. 29). “The peace i feel is far beyond what i thought possible.”

The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star also shared anecdotes form his spiritual journey, including one where he asked God to “send someone to touch my back” while praying at church. “Moments later, two people came up behind me saying that God put it on their heart to put their hands on me and pray,” Bassett wrote. “His love is great, and my faith is certain. praise be to God forever and ever in Jesus name.”

“I have also first hand encountered Jesus twice,” the actor added. “The experience’s [sic] were richer and more vivid than anything in my entire life… i look forward to speaking about it soon.”

Bassett’s posts come a few weeks after he startled some fans and delighted others with a religious Jan. 5 tweet that read, “Jesus Christ is the only way. His death and resurrection are historically documented. turn away form hate, seek forgiveness and come home to Him .”

The message polarized his audience, with some people leaving question marks and notes of concern in his comments section. Others praised Bassett for embracing Christianity.

A few days before that, however, the “Lie, Lie, Lie” musician had tweeted, “most people i know, including myself, are struggling right now.”

“Please be good to yourselves and others, reach out to support those you love, and dont be afraid to ask for help,” he’d noted in the tweet posted on Christmas Eve.

Billboard has reached out to Bassett’s rep for comment.

The young star has certainly had a turbulent past couple of years. In January 2021, he became the target of online harassment after his HMTMTS costar and rumored ex-girlfriend Olivia Rodrigo released her heartbreaking hit single “Drivers License,” which painted an ex in a not-so-positive light. That same month, he was hospitalized after experiencing septic shock and heart failure.

In a pair of GQ interviews, Bassett also opened up about coming to terms with his sexuality, going to therapy and healing from incidents of sexual abuse he experienced in his childhood.

“I just hope that this generation can feel comfortable, confident, and safe talking about sexuality without needing to be a box and without needing to have it all figured out,” he told the publication in June 2021. “I didn’t necessarily have that when I was younger … I’m growing so much. The year that I’ve had has been earth-shattering. I’m still landing on my feet.”

Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Oprah Winfrey Are All Smiles in Selfies Together

Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez and more famous faces got together over the weekend to celebrate makeup mogul Anastasia Soare.

On Monday (Jan. 30), the SKIMS mogul posted selfies and more photos with the talk-show legend and former Super Bowl halftime performer from the bash, which marked the 25th anniversary of Soare’s massively popular makeup brand Anastasia Beverly Hills Cosmetics.

“Celebrating @anastasiasoare’s 25 year anniversary of her brand @anastasiabeverlyhills,” Kardashian captioned the carousel of pics. “The women who have been on this journey with you coming together to celebrate you was magical! You are the epitome of the American Dream and I couldn’t be more proud of you. I look up to you, you give the best advice and hearing everyone’s kind words about you just reminded me what I already knew.”

Amusingly, one fan commented, “Why does this look more like it was a party for Oprah” on Kardashian’s post, and they wouldn’t be wrong, considering the media personality happened to ring in her birthday on Sunday (Jan. 29).

According to another photo from Kardashian’s slideshow, the party was a veritable who’s who of women in Hollywood, with everyone from Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara and Kris Jenner to Jessica Alba, Rita Wilson, Maria Menounos and Ashley Tisdale also in attendance.

Lopez also shared the selfies and other snaps on her Instagram account. “Lovely dinner last night celebrating Anastasia’s 25th anniversary,” she captioned her carousel.

Soare’s get-together also coincided with the release of J. Lo’s latest rom-com, Shotgun Wedding, which is now streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Earlier this month, the multihyphenate revealed that she was originally meant to participate in Madonna and Britney’s infamous kiss at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, but was replaced with Christina Aguilera as she was filming a movie at the time and couldn’t get away from set.

Smokey Robinson Sets New Solo Album ‘Gasms’

It’s been nearly a decade since Smokey Robinson’s last album, but new music from the King of Motown is on the horizon.

Robinson will release the nine-track album “Gasms” on April 28, the music legend behind hits like “My Girl” and “The Way You Do the Things You Do” announced Friday.

“Gasms” features new songs produced and written by Robinson himself. The former vice president of Motown Records released his last collaborative album nine years ago, “Smokey & Friends,” which featured musicians like Elton John, John Legend, Steven Tyler and Mary J. Blige.

The upcoming album’s first single, “If We Don’t Have Each Other,” is now available on streaming services.

Robinson is a legendary music producer, songwriter, record label executive and solo musician who’s penned over 4,000 songs and been inducted into the the Rock ‘n’ Roll and Songwriters’ halls of fame.

The musician has worked with other historic Motown artists like the Temptations, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway and Marvin Gaye.

Robinson will soon be honored alongside fellow Motown musician Berry Gordy as the 2023 “Persons Of The Year” at the Recording Academy’s annual MusiCares event on Feb. 3 in Los Angeles.

Flume Wins Triple J’s Hottest 100 Countdown With ‘Say Nothing’ Featuring MAY-A

For the second time, Flume has won triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown.

The Australian electronic producer came in at No. 1 on the annual countdown with “Say Nothing” featuring MAY-A, one of 57 homegrown entries in the top 100.

The Hottest 100 poll is an institution Down Under, one that triple j, a division of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), has called the “world’s biggest musical democracy.”

Though it no longer coincides with Australia Day, on Jan. 26 — a controversial date in the minds of a growing number of Australians — more than 2.4 million votes were cast for the countdown.

Flume (real name Harley Streten) becomes just the second artist to win the Hottest 100 twice, having nabbed top spot in 2017 with “Never Be Like You” (Brisbane rockers Powderfinger did the double back-to-back with 1999’s “These Days” and 2000’s “My Happiness”).

The Sydney artist shared a picture of himself enjoying a hug with songwriter Sarah Aarons in the studio. “Can’t believe we made it to #1, thank you to everyone who voted,” he writes.

And with his win, he’s chalked up 17 total tracks since his 2012 debut on the countdown. He’s the only act to rank a song in every position of the top 5, according to triple j reps.

Flume is a guy for the big occasion. A Grammy Award winner (for 2020’s best dance/electronic album category with Skin), he collected six nominations for the 2022 ARIA Awards, and “Say Nothing” is shortlisted for song of the year at 2023 APRA Music Awards.

“Say Nothing” is lifted from Flume’s third studio album, Palaces, which debuted at No. 3 on the ARIA Chart in 2022.

Meanwhile, Eliza Rose’s “B.O.T.A.” with Interplanetary Criminals, and Spacey Jane “Hardlight” respectively completed the podium for the Hottest 100, which ranks listeners’ favorite songs from the previous year and reached its climax on Saturday evening, Jan. 28..

Also noteworthy is iconic Adelaide hip-hop trio Hilltop Hoods, which landed two entries in the latest poll, for a career total of 23 songs — an all-time record (Foo Fighters and the now-defunct Powderfinger both have 22).

This time, 10 songs from First Nations artists made the tally, easily beating the previous record of six. And 23 entries were from debutants.

Kamasi Washington, Leon Bridges Set For 2023 Hollywood Bowl Jazz Fest

Kamasi Washington and Leon Bridges lead the lineup for the 2023 Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival, set for June 17-18.

Also confirmed on the bill is West Coast Get Down, St. Paul and The Broken Bones, Digable Planets, Poncho Sanchez, Aziza, Soul Rebels with Big Freedia, Samara Joy, Lionel Loueke and Gretchen Parlato, Boukman Eksperyans, Butcher Brown and many others.

The full lineup and single-day tickets will be available from Tuesday, March 14.

Hosted by Arsenio Hall and presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Assn., the two-day fest celebrates its 43rd year at the Hollywood Bowl.

Sax virtuoso Kamasi Washington, winner of the inaugural 2016 American Music Prize for his triple-CD odyssey, The Epic, is co-curator of the fest alongside legendary keyboardist Herbie Hancock, the LA Phil’s creative chair for jazz.

“I was thrilled when the LA Phil asked me to co-curate this festival with Kamasi and explore his extraordinary artistic vision,” comments Hancock, a 14-time Grammy Award winner. “Our celebration this year includes so many artists—both emerging and established—at defining moments in their musical journeys.”

Together, “we hope to create community and connection through the music we make and leave audiences feeling uplifted and inspired.” Hancock won’t perform at the fest; his next LA Phil concert is Sunday, April 2 at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Adds Washington said, “Herbie is one of the greatest musicians to ever live and I am so grateful to be working with him on this special show. Herbie and I have been working with the LA Phil team to create a one-of-a-kind experience that we hope will leave the audience with excitement, joy, life, soul and most of all great music.”
