Hiland Dairy Settles $140,000 Discrimination Suit

Hiland Dairy, the Springfield based food and drink company, will pay out $140,000 to settle a disability discrimination lawsuit.

According to a release from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the lawsuit was filed after the company’s Norman, Oklahoma location refused to hire an individual because he was visually impaired.

The EEOC alleged that Hiland Dairy withdrew there offer following a medical screening in which the doctor claimed the man was legally blind.

Investigators say the doctor never personally examined the man’s vision during the screening.

Spokespeople for Hiland say they deny any wrongdoing in the case, and did not violate the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Along with the $140,000 payment, Hiland Dairy will also be subject to create policies that align with ADA and periodic check-in’s with EEOC.

Intocable Leads Regional Mexican Airplay Chart With ‘Un Poquito Tuyo’

Intocable adds an 18th No. 1 to its career history on Billboard‘s Regional Mexican Airplay chart with the group’s latest single, “Un Poquito Tuyo.” The Texan band achieves the feat as the song advances from the runner-up slot to rule the list dated Jan. 14. With 18 champs on its ledger, the group ties for the second-most No. 1s among all acts.

“Un Poquito Tuyo,” released Oct. 18 via Good I Music, leads after two weeks at No. 2 with a 3% gain in audience impressions, to 8.5 million, earned during the Dec. 30-Jan. 5 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The band scored its first champ in 1996 with “No Te Vayas,” a little less than two years after Regional Mexican Airplay launched in Oct. 1994. Its longest-leading No. 1 is the 13-week ruler “Sueña” in 2002.

Further, with the new success, Intocable ties with Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizárraga and Banda MS for the second-most No. 1s among all acts, all with 18, just behind Calibre 50’s 22 rulers. Here’s a look at the scoreboard:

  • 22, Calibre 50
  • 18, Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizárraga
  • 18, Banda MS
  • 18, Intocable
  • 17, La Arrolladora Banda el Limon de Rene Camacho
  • 16, Conjunto Primavera
  • 16, Los Tigres del Norte

“Un Poquito” arrives at No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay six months after “Si Me Duela Que Duela,” the two-week ruler in July 2022 which earned the sextet its first champ almost a decade after it landed at the penthouse in 2013 with “Te Amo (Para Siempre).”

“Un Poquito” and “Si Me Duela” will be included on Intocable’s forthcoming album slated for release later in the year.

Elsewhere, “Un Poquito” holds at its No. 3 high on the all-genre Latin Airplay and at No. 37 on the multi-metric Hot Latin Songs chart.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ on Track For Fifth Week at No. 1 In U.K.

Taylor Swift’s Midnights (via EMI) is set to extend its reign in the U.K.

Based on midweek data published by the Official Charts Company, Swift’s tenth and latest studio album is on track for a fifth non-consecutive week at No. 1.

It’s already Swift’s longest-reigning album in the U.K., overtaking the three-week lead for 2020’s Folklore.

Meanwhile, SZA holds at No. 2 on the midweek chart with SOS (RCA/Top Dawg), while The Weeknd’s The Highlights (Republic Records/XO) should complete the podium.

The highest debut on the next chart would appear to be Gabrielle Aplin’s Phosphorescent (Never Fade), the English singer-songwriter’s fourth LP. Phosphorescent lights up the Official Chart Update at No. 4, and should give Aplin her first top 10 since English Rain, her debut album which peaked at No. 2 back in 2013.

Also on the brink of a top 10 finish is punk legend Iggy Pop, whose 19th album Every Loser (Atlantic) is on track for a No. 9 start. If it holds its course, Iggy’s LP would be just his second top 10 appearance as a solo artist, after 2016’s Post Pop Depression peaked at No. 5.

Former The Maccabees frontman Orlando Weeks’ could nab a solo top 40 appearance with The Gritterman (Blood), the original soundtrack to his debut book of the same name. It’s at No. 36 on the midweek chart. The Maccabees landed four top 40 albums, including a No. 1 for 2015’s Marks To Prove It.

The Gritterman, first published as an ebook in 2017, and the following year in paperback, is described as “a song for the unsung hero” and “a bittersweet story about stoicism, dignity and a man leaving behind the work that he loves,” with illustrations by Weeks.

Over on the midweek singles chart, Lewis Capaldi’s “Pointless” (Vertigo) leapfrogs Raye’s current leader, “Escapsim” (Human Re Sources), in what’s shaping as a tight race.

All will be revealed when the Official Charts are published late Friday.

Miley Cyrus Teases New Single ‘Flowers’ From the Shower

Miley Cyrus took to social media on Monday (Jan. 9) to tease the chorus of her upcoming single “Flowers,” fully in the buff.

“I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand/ Talk to myself for hours, yeah, some things you don’t understand/ But I can take myself dancing, yeah/ I can hold my own hand/ Yeah, I can love me better than you can,” the superstar belted a cappella from privacy of her shower, her back turned to the camera as she ran her hands through her wet hair.

The sultry video isn’t the first time the Hannah Montana star has given fans a taste of the track, which she announced in the final days of 2022 and is due out Friday via new label home Columbia Records. (The release date also just so happens to be her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth’s 33rd birthday.) When “Flowers” does arrive, the independent-minded ballad will serve as the lead single from Cyrus’ eighth studio album Endless Summer Vacation, dropping March 10.

On the last day of the year, Cyrus celebrated her second stint co-hosting her eponymous New Year’s Eve special live from Miami on NBC — this time with godmother Dolly Parton. Over the course of the evening, the two performed everything from “Jolene” and “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” to a medley of “Wrecking Ball” and “I Will Always Love You.” Cyrus also trotted out special guest stars like Paris Hilton and Sia, David Byrne and Fletcher to join her, respectively, on the former’s “Stars Are Blind,” David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” and her own “Midnight Sky.”

Matty Healy Sucks on a Fan’s Thumb During The 1975 Concert

Another day, another concert in which The 1975‘s Matty Healy makes headlines for his performance antics.

While playing “Robbers,” one of The 1975’s fan-favorite tracks, Healy made waves after sucking a girl’s thumb toward the end of song. Footage from the moment shows the rock star getting a caress to the face from a fan at the barricade; then Healy leans into her hand to suck her thumb by the time the song is over.

The owner of the thumb — a fan named Kayleigh — took to Twitter to share her excitement at sharing such an intimate moment with The 1975 singer, and wrote on Sunday “EVERYONE IS CALLING ME THUMB GIRL BYE.” She followed up the tweet Monday (Jan. 9) and shared, “I’d like to publicly apologise to denise welch and tim healy for making them watch their son suck my thumb last night.”

It is now common knowledge that The 1975’s fans expect memorable moments from Healy onstage. In November, the vocalist kissed a fan during “Robbers,” later extending his affections and kissing fellow bandmate Ross MacDonald. The following month, Healy got a tattoo that read “I’m a Man” during a break in the band’s set. In previous stops during the North American trek, Healy made waves for eating raw meat onstage.

The 1975 returned to touring for the new year on Jan. 8 and will make several stops across the United Kingdom before heading to South America, Australia, New Zealand and Asia later in the year.

Kevin Hart Says Fame Is ‘Biggest Drug’ Over Cocaine or Heroin: ‘That’s a Monster You’re Feeding’

Kevin Hart is getting real about the dangers of fame.

The A-list comedian sat opposite mindfulness and lifestyle guru Jay Shetty for the newest episode of his podcast, On Purpose With Jay Shetty, and the two talked about an array of subjects including Hart’s relationship with his late father, building generational wealth and how Dave Chappelle’s example often inspired him and Chris Rock to step up their stand-up game.

Hart also spent a chunk of time sharing his perspective on the cult of celebrity. “The biggest drug. It’s not cocaine, it’s not heroin, it’s fame. Anything you want, everything you want, it’s a thing,” explained Hart. “And if you can’t handle this thing, the consequences attached are severe. Do you know you? And are you OK with you? If you are not, it’ll break you.”

It’s like a monster, he continued.

“My monsters have been masked in disguise in various different ways but I’ve been able to pinpoint them throughout the years because some of those monsters got stronger … developed. You’re talking about the world of an ego. The idea of who you think you are versus what you are or the idea of expectations and needs as to what you feel you need and what you have to have,” Hart told Shetty, who will soon release his new book, 8 Rules of Love — How to Find it, Keep it, and Let it Go, from Simon & Schuster on Jan. 31. “That’s a monster that’s feeding that engine of, well, now that I’m making money, this is what I should have, this is how I should look, this is how I’m supposed to be. That’s a monster that you’re feeding because ultimately you’re buying in.”

The conversation also saw Hart open up about his relationship to Chappelle and Rock, specifically how the former would set a standard on the stand-up stage that would force the others to rethink their sets.

“Dave Chappelle has made me and Chris Rock feel stupid at times when it comes to our choice and material. We have watched Dave in our earlier stages of just working on our set. We would spend time at The Cellar and one would come and we would all go and Dave would go up and me and Chris had just went up and we were happy about our material,” he explained. “There’s been times where we have looked at each other and we balled our papers up and said, ‘We gotta start over, we gotta start over.’ Not because of jealousy or envy. Because we challenge each other. We want the best for not only each other, but for ourselves.”

All three have achieved massive success and Hart said he’s now focused on leaving a piece of the pie for his children. “We just got a shot at something different. We got a shot at generational wealth. We got a shot at changing the ‘trajectory’ within our culture of opportunity. We got a shot to make this normal. Once again, I’m looking past me. I’m looking at the bigger piece to the plan.”

To hear Hart’s full comments on complacency, the best memory from his childhood and why being a multi-hyphenate is the way to go, see the full episode below.

R&B/Hip-Hop Fresh Picks of the Week: Ice Spice, redveil, BabyTron & More

New year, new picks. After all the unforgettable drops of 2022, we’re starting off strong in 2023 with the best cuts from this year’s emerging acts. From burgeoning talents like Ice Spice and redveil to longer-standing favorites like Kamaiyah and Trash Panda, we have an array of sounds to help you achieve all of your New Year’s resolutions.

And of course, don’t forget to share the wealth with our Spotify playlist, linked below.

Freshest Find: Trash Panda, “Doin’ Fine Today”

Thanks to Trash Panda’s latest single, we’re doing fine today, too. The band has dipped into a number of different genres over the course of its catalog, and this feel-good cut draws influence from ’70s funk and soul sounds — making for a perfect soundtrack to the week, and to the start of 2023.

Fresco Trey feat. Brezay, “Pull Up”

There’s something in the water in Memphis, and newcomers Fresco Trey and Brezay are adding to the city’s rich swagger with their new single “Pull Up.” Produced by Jeff Williams, the song is built on heavy bass with choir undertones as the two bounce off each other’s boastful bars with adrenaline-powered flows. “My inspiration for ‘Pull Up’ really came from the vibe of Memphis,” Trey explains in a press release. “We invited some local artists to come to the studio and vibe out. When I heard the beat, I jumped in the booth. Then my homegirl Brezay hopped on and killed it!”

Kamaiyah, “Thru the Week”

Kamaiyah is one of one. On her bouncy new single “Thru the Week,” the Oakland mainstay asserts that every day she’s hustling and getting money. As she should. “Thru the Week” follows the rapper’s recent project Keep It Lit, which was released back in December.

CJ Fly, “Have Knots”

On “Have Knots,” Brooklyn rapper CJ Fly reflects on his life and ascent as a musician. “We all that we got/ Used to dream about the day I see us all at the top/ I got goals of being rich because I was a have-not/ My life’s a movie and my story, it’s all part of the plot,” he raps over a NasteeLuvzYou-produced beat. The Pro Era/Beast Coast member also teased a new project to come in April, tweeting, “if you not a fan by February, you will be by April #FLY23.”

Dende, “Sensually”

The intro track to his new EP Before We Crash, “Sensually” finds Texas-born newcomer Dende totally in love. The rising singer stretches his vocals in old-school R&B fashion, crooning that his lover is the centerpiece of his dreams.

redveil, “2daside”

Where redveil is from, they do it “2daside.” The PG County, Maryland native channeled his inner child for this self-produced new single, which finds him racing tricycles with his friends, playing with sidewalk chalk and cosplaying as Bob Ross to paint the Maryland state flag.

Young DrA feat. NLE Choppa, “Don’t Understand”

With the arrival of a new year, Young DrA is setting a few things straight. The Chicago newcomer joins forces with Memphis mainstay NLE Choppa on “Don’t Understand” as the pair deliver rumbling verses overtop a dark trap beat. “Don’t talk my language they don’t understand/ Don’t know my pain so you don’t understand,” Young DrA raps on the chorus.

BabyTron, “Mr. Hanky”

If there’s one thing BabyTron can guarantee, it’s smirk-inducing bars. Sampling Peter from Family Guy within the first seconds of “Mr. Hanky,” the Ypsilanti, Mich. native rattles off one witty rap after another, a distinctly Detroit beat sounding off behind him.

Daisy Veacock, “the things that you tell her”

Baring sonic similarity to U.K. favorite Lily Allen and infusing jazz influence à la Amy Winehouse, singer-songwriter Daisy Veacock delivers a potent yet laid-back single with “the things you tell her.” Daughter to professional saxophonist Phil Veacock, the South London vocalist hails from a musical background and is sure to capture listeners with the track’s clever melodies and relatable lyrics.

Ice Spice, “In Ha Mood”

Whether or not you think she’s our modern-day Princess Diana, one thing we can all agree on is that Ice Spice IS the moment. “In Ha Mood” is the Bronx rapper’s second release since breakthrough hit “Munch (Feelin’ U),” and is proving to be a quick success in social media, thanks to her simple approach to lyrics that the internet has come to love. Drawing sonic inspiration from the Jersey club scene and enlisting producer RIOTUSA (who is also responsible for both “Munch” and follow-up single “Bikini Bottom”), Ice Spice is clearly in the mood to take 2023 by storm.
