Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ Soars to 2 Billion Views on YouTube

Gotye just hit a major milestone: The 42-year-old Belgian musician has now reached 2 billion views on YouTube for his 11-year-old smash-hit music video “Somebody That I Used to Know,” featuring New Zealand art-pop artist Kimbra.

In the video, Gotye can be seen with Kimbra appearing naked while standing in front of a canvas that gets colored with different shades. The two sing their parts of the breakup song while fading into the wall print. While the video may be a simple concept, the message of the song goes deep and helped define the 2010s music scene.

The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks from April to June 2012. It went on to win Grammys for record of the year and best pop duo/group performance, while Gotye’s Making Mirrors album won as best alternative music album.

Fans in the comment section of the video describe Gotye’s new accomplishment as “well deserved.”

During the year of the track’s release, Gotye was already an established artist in Australia. He was gearing up to release Making Mirrors and had dropped the lead single, “Eyes Wide Open.” “Based upon that, I didn’t have any expectations,” Gotye told Billboard in 2019 of the reception to “Eyes.”

Before its official release, the audio of “Somebody That I Used to Know” leaked onto iTunes, with Australia, Belgium and Netherlands starting to play the track. The video arrived, and the rest was historyi

“iTunes, YouTube and Facebook — at the different points they were at — all had a pretty big impact on how this song and video were shared initially,” Gotye told Billboard. “To even have a few hundred million views, it was one of the most-watched music videos at that time.”

Diddy Set to Perform at Baby2Baby Gala Honoring Kim Kardashian

Baby2Baby shared the news Thursday (Nov. 10) that Diddy will take the stage at the organization’s upcoming gala honoring Kim Kardashian.

While the Bad Boy Records founder will provide the musical entertainment for the evening, the SKIMS mogul will be presented with this year’s Giving Tree Award by Tyler Perry for her commitment to helping underprivileged children around the world.

Hosted by Mindy Kaling, the Baby2Baby gala will take place Saturday in Los Angeles, with Olivia Wilde, Ciara, Kelly Rowland, Zooey Deschanel and Kerry Washington among the night’s other presenters.

The announcement follows Diddy’s headlining-making feud with Kardashian’s ex-husband Kanye West, after the controversial rapper/designer wore a shirt emblazoned with “White Lives Matter” to his Yeezy season 9 show during Paris Fashion Week. (Several models in the show were also fitted with ensembles bearing the contentious phrase, as was conservative firebrand Candace Owens, whom Ye invited to share the stage.)

Last month, West leaked a private text conversation with Diddy, in which the now-estranged pals faced off over the incident. In the weeks since, Ye has created an increasingly troubling spiral of scandal for himself by spouting off antisemitic rhetoric on social media and in the press, resulting in brands including Balenciaga, Adidas and Gap to sever ties with him.

Meanwhile, Diddy recently rang in his 53rd birthday earlier this month, just a few weeks after hosting the REVOLT Summit 2022 in Atlanta featuring Coi Leray, Gucci Mane, Big Freedia and more.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Drops Trailer for 2022 Induction Ceremony, Featuring Dolly Parton, Eminem, Carly Simon & More

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is gearing up to celebrate its class of 2022 with the public on Nov. 19, and on Thursday (Nov. 10), a trailer for the upcoming special was released.

In the nearly two-minute clip, snippets from the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony earlier this month flash across the screen. Rock hitmakers Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo, new wave chart-toppers Duran Duran, hip-hop heavyweight Eminem, synth-pop duo Eurythmics, country legend Dolly Parton, R&B hitmaker Lionel Richie and pop singer-songwriter Carly Simon are all seen accepting their prestigious honor, along with introductions from star-studded attendees. Judas Priest and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis also joined the Rock Hall with the “award for musical excellence.”

“Rock and roll is not a color,” Richie is seen saying in the teaser. “It’s a vibe!”

Artists are eligible for Rock Hall nomination 25 years after their first commercial recording came out. Of this class, Eminem, Duran Duran, Richie, Simon and Parton see induction after appearing on the ballot just once. This is also Eminem’s first year of eligibility; 2022 marked the second nomination for Eurythmics and Benatar.

The 2022 ceremony also marked the first time in the Hall’s 37-year history that six female acts — Benatar, Parton, Simon, Cotten, Robinson and Annie Lennox (who comprised Eurythmics with her partner Dave Stewart) — were inducted in one class.

Watch the trailer below, and be sure to catch the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, streaming November 19 on HBO Max, which you can sign up for here.

Prince Royce, Nicky Jam & Jay Wheeler Hit Top 10 on Latin Airplay Chart With ‘Si Te Preguntan’

It’s a profitable partnership between Prince Royce, Nicky Jam and Jay Wheeler as “Si Te Preguntan” rallies 18-3 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart (dated Nov. 12).

“Si Te Preguntan” earns the highest weekly jump to the upper region thanks to its robust 74% gain in audience impressions, to 7.9 million, earned in the U.S. in the week ending Nov. 6, according to Luminate.

“Si Te Preguntan” debuted on the radio ranking at No. 35 and nearly missed its top 10 visit end of September, lifting 14-11 (chart dated Sept. 24), where it remained for two weeks. It reaches the top 10 in its 15th week amid renewed radio reception, climbing 15 positions. It’s one of eight songs to jump at least 15 positions in a single week into the top 10 in 2022:

Biggest Jumps to Top 10 on Latin Airplay in 2022, Title, Artist, Chart

Over on Tropical Airplay, the track pushes closer to the summit with a 5-2 jump, a new peak. It previously reached a No. 3 high on the Aug. 30-dated list, and has been in the top five for the last 14 consecutive weeks. Further, for Jam, it’s the closest he’s been to the top since the eight-week ruler “Cásate Conmigo,” with Silvestre Dangond, in 2018. As for Wheeler — it’s his first hit on Tropical Airplay, while Prince Royce has previously notched 22 No. 1s.

Goyo Visits Tropical Airplay’s Top 10 With India Collab

Elsewhere on Tropical Airplay, ChocQuibTown’s Goyo crosses off a new milestone earning her first visit and top 10 with “Nubes Negras,” with India. The track rises 14-10 with 1 million in audience impressions, up 10%.

It’s Goyo’s first entry as a lead act, unaccompanied by her band, ChocQuibTown, which last scored an entry through its featured role in Arthur Hanlon’s “No Tuve La Culpa” (No. 11 high in 2018).

Meanwhile, India collects her 26th top 10 after she took over atop Tropical Airplay for one week with “Víctimas Las Dos,” with Victor Manuelle, in May 2021. In addition to holding the record for the most No. 1s on Tropical Airplay among female acts, India continues to hold the second-most top 10s among women on the ranking, trailing only Olga Tañon’s 27 top 10s.

Man from Lawrence County, Previously Charged with Murder, Sentenced on Weapons Charges

A man from Lawrence County will spend a decade in prison on weapons charges.

Lawrence Timmons was found guilty in July on six counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, and was sentenced Tuesday to ten years in jail without parole.

Reports say he was charged in 2019 to the six weapons charges, as well as murder charges.

Timmons was charged with murder in the death of Cynthia Smith in July of 1988. Prosecutors say there was not enough evidence to convict, and the charges were eventually dropped.

Timmons was sentenced to ten years for each of the six counts, but the judge ruled they be served concurrently. The judge also granted time served.

Alabama’s Randy Owen & Teddy Gentry Remember Bandmate Jeff Cook

Alabama members Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry have spoken out about the death of their bandmate and cousin, Alabama co-founder and guitarist Jeff Cook, who died on Nov. 8 at his home in Destin, Fla. Cook was 73, and had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2012.

“He lived to play our music we created together,” Owen said via a statement. “He could play any instrument he chose, but his harmonies I’ll miss the most. I’m thankful we got to create music together for over 50 years! Wish we could play ‘My Home’s in Alabama’ one more time. I’m hurt in a way I can’t describe! To Lisa, thanks for loving him and being there for him to the end. Play on, Jeff. Love you!”

Gentry added, “Closer than brothers, we lived together more than with our immediate families. Don’t think I’ve known anyone who loved playing more. Jeff, along with me and Randy, experienced the highs of undreamed success, as well as some very tough early years. None of us were perfect, but together we had something so special it will never die. No other guitar player I’ve known had the range of styles Jeff had. No one can take your place. Ever. Rest in peace till we get to jam again.”

The group, which featured Cook on guitar, fiddle, keyboards and backing vocals, and his cousins Owen (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Gentry (bass, backing vocals) as its longest running members, began playing together around the Fort Payne, Ala., area in a band they called Young Country in 1969 (which later changed to Wildcountry in 1972). They expanded their touring footprint, most notably becoming the house band at Myrtle Beach, S.C., venue The Bowery. In 1977, the band changed its name to Alabama, and two years later, drummer Mark Herndon began performing with the group on a more regular basis.

In 1980, they released the single “Tennessee River,” notching their first No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart. They went on to earn 33 No. 1 hits on the chart, among 51 top 10 songs between 1980 and 2011, with songs including “Tennessee River,” “Old Flame,” “High Cotton,” “Down Home,” “Jukebox in My Mind,” “40 Hour Week (For a Livin’),” and “The Closer You Get.”

The group also saw crossover successes, earning five top 10 hits on Billboard‘s Adult Contemporary chart as well as three top 20 hits on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 with “Feels So Right,” “Love in the First Degree” and “Take Me Down.”

They were the first group to win the Country Music Association’s entertainer of the year honor, an accolade they took home three times between 1982 and 1984, and were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2019.

Cook is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lisa Cook, puppies Blazer and Blakely, his mother Betty Cook, his brother David Cook, Crystal Cook, his father-in-law Jerrial Williams, his brother-in-law Randy Williams and many nieces and nephews. Cook was pre-deceased by his father James Cook and his mother-in-law, JoAnn Williams.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Mariah Carey’s Got ‘Emotions’ About Season 5 of ‘The Crown’ Featuring Her Hit

Fit for a queen! Mariah Carey was feeling all the emotions on Wednesday night (Nov. 9) as she tuned into the season five premiere of The Crown.

“THE CROWN premiered last night and of course I had to have my own screening dahhlings!” the icon captioned an Instagram video showing her lounging in her screening room in a tiara and silky white robe as she sips from a fancy tea cup, as her son Moroccan snoozes on a couch opposite her. Mimi then shared with the Lambs that her 1991 hit “Emotions” is featured in the first episode of the Netflix hit’s new season. “Seeeeee!” she exclaims with a big smile as the track begins to play.

Starring Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Leslie Manville, Dominic West, Jonny Lee Miller and Elizabeth Debicki, season five of The Crown charts the Britsh royal family’s lives throughout the 1990s, and will touch on major events including the tragic 1997 death of Princess Diana.

“Emotions” — which earned Mariah the fifth consecutive No. 1 of her career upon its release — is the latest throwback hit to get dusted off for a major Netflix sync following the likes of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal WIth God)” and Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” on season four of Stranger Things. (It’s worth noting both of those tracks saw impressive bumps on the charts after their respective episodes of the sci-fi series dropped on the streamer.)

Meanwhile, Carey just released her new children’s book, The Christmas Princess, and is currently gearing up for her quartet of Merry Christmas to All! holiday shows in New York City and Toronto. The string of festivities will also be followed by a two-hour primetime special on CBS.
