Kanye West Invited to L.A. Holocaust Museum After Latest Anti-Semitic Comments: ‘Words Matter’

Kanye West‘s recent string of anti-Semitic comments has led to widespread condemnation as well as an invitation on Tuesday (Oct. 11) from the Holocaust Museum L.A. to come by for a visit to learn about the devastating impacts of hate speech. In an Instagram Story the museum said, “Words matter and words have consequences Ye. We urge you to come visit us at Holocaust Museum L.A. to understand just how words can incite horrific violence and genocide.”

Twitter removed Ye’s tweet on Saturday for violating the platform’s rules after the rapper wrote that he was going to go “death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE… The funny thing is I actually can’t be Anti Semitic because black people are actually Jew also You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda,” he ended the tweet.

The comment followed Meta’s removal of Instagram posts by West for violating that platform’s policies after he posted text messages between him and fellow rapper P. Diddy claiming he would “show the Jews that told you to call me that no one can threaten or influence me.” In April, the Anti-Defamation League, which tracks anti-Semitic behavior nationwide, reported a 34% rise in anti-Semitic incidents in 2021 (to 2,717), which averaged out to more than seven such incidents per day.

At press time a spokesperson for West had not returned multiple requests for comment.

West’s comments have been vilified by a number of fellow artists, activists and politicians, with Holocaust Museum noting in its invitation that, “The Holocaust started with only words that sadly begat stereotypes, racial and religious tropes and blaming others and led to the murder of six million Jews. At Holocaust Museum LA it is our mission to commemorate those who are murdered, educate on the Holocaust and all genocides… and inspire a more dignified and human world.”

Those atrocities, the Museum added, include the Armenian genocide of the early 20th century in which experts estimate that between 664,000 and 1.2 million Armenians were slaughtered; it also noted that Ye’s four young children with ex-wife Kim Kardashian are Armenian given their mother’s heritage. “Your words reach millions and you can choose to incite or you can choose to inspire,” the message ended.

In the wake of West’s posts, the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. also weighed in on the dangers of spreading anti-Semitic speech in tweet on Tuesday, writing, “Do you know what antisemitism is? Could you recognize it online or in a conversation? Prejudice or hatred of Jews began long before the Nazis. Eighty years after the Holocaust, antisemitism persists in various forms, including racial, religious, economic, and political.”

West began last week by raising eyebrows with a “White Lives Matter” shirt at his Paris Fashion Week show, but that controversy was quickly overshadowed by his latest anti-Semitic provocation, which elicited harsh responses from Yasiin Bey, Jack Antonoff, Sarah Silverman and Jamie Lee Curtis, as well as a number of anti-hate organizations.

Hot 100 First-Timers: Megan Moroney Arrives With Country Love Song ‘Tennessee Orange’

Singer-songwriter Megan Moroney makes her first visit to the Billboard Hot 100 as her breakthrough single “Tennessee Orange” debuts on the latest, Oct. 15-dated chart at No. 94.

The song, which Moroney self-released Sept. 2, debuts with 4.9 million U.S. streams (up 15%) and 1,000 downloads sold in the Sept. 30-Oct. 6 tracking week, according to Luminate. It concurrently climbs 29-25 in its fourth week on Hot Country Songs.

Contributing to the song’s gains is its backstory. Fans believe that Moroney co-wrote it about Morgan Wallen, whom she’s rumored to be dating. In the single, the Savannah, Ga., native sings about being a fan of the University of Georgia, of which she’s also a graduate, but is so enamored over a new love interest that she’s willing to wear University of Tennessee’s trademark orange for him. (Wallen is a UT fan.)

On TikTok, a portion of the song’s chorus has been used in over 32,000 clips, primarily by couples sharing their own love stories. Moroney herself boasts more than 380,000 followers on the platform. (TikTok does not presently directly contribute data to Billboard charts.)

Moroney is a newcomer to Billboard charts, as “Tennessee Orange” became her first chart entry when it debuted at No. 17 on the Country Digital Song Sales survey dated Sept. 17. She also jumps 22-16 for a new high on the latest Emerging Artists chart.

The track was produced by Kristian Bush, who is half of the duos Sugarland, with Jennifer Nettles, and Billy Pilgrim, with Andrew Hyra. Bush has also produced tracks for Boys Like Girls, Lindsay Ell and Matt Nathanson.

Moroney performed as an opener for Chase Rice in concert while she was a student at UGA. She released her debut six-song EP Pistol Made of Roses in July.

Slipknot Tops Billboard Artist 100 Chart Thanks to ‘The End, So Far’ Debut

Slipknot re-enters the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated Oct. 15) at No. 1, returning as the top musical act in the U.S. for a second total week, thanks to the group’s new album The End, So Far.

The set, released via Roadrunner/3EE, debuts at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 59,000 equivalent album units earned in its first week (Sept. 30-Oct. 6), according to Luminate. The group earns its sixth top 10 and first since We Are Not Your Kind, which opened as the act’s third No. 1 in 2019.

Slipknot is just the second rock band to rule the Artist 100 this year, after Red Hot Chili Peppers in April.

Elsewhere on the Artist 100, Tyler Childers re-enters at No. 11, a new high, thanks to his new album Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? The LP launches at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 with 27,000 units, marking his first top 10.

Plus, Denzel Curry debuts on the Artist 100 at No. 19, sparked by the vinyl release of his album Melt My Eyez See Your Future. The set debuts at No. 1 on Vinyl Albums and No. 2 on Top Album Sales and re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 17 (after a week at No. 51 in April), becoming his highest charting album.

The Artist 100 measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay and streaming to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott, Ex-Beautiful South Artists, Lead Midweek U.K. Chart With ‘N.K-Pop’

Former Beautiful South bandmates Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott are on track for a second U.K. chart crown with N.K-Pop (via EMI).

The English duo’s latest release leads the midweek survey, and, if it holds its course, will deliver the pair a second consecutive No. 1, after 2020’s Manchester Calling hit the summit.

Close behind is Maybe In Another Life…? (Island), the sophomore offering from Leicester alternative-pop act Easy Life. Maybe is at No. 2 on the Official Chart Update, and should give the outfit their third top ten, following 2020 mixtape Junk Food (peaking at No. 7) and 2021 debut studio set Life’s A Beach (No. 2).

Pink Floyd’s classic 1977 album “Animals” (Rhino) flies into the midweek top tier, thanks to a deluxe gatefold edition. Animals, which originally peaked at No. 2, roars 60-3 on the latest chart blast.

British ‘80s rockers The Cult is eying a first top 5 appearance in 29 years with Under The Midnight Sun (Black Hill), bowing at No. 4 on the chart blast. The “She Sells Sanctuary” band, comprised of Ian Astbury, Billy Duffy, John Tempesta, Charlie Jones and Damon Fox, last cracked the top 5 in 1993 with Pure Cult, which went all the way to No. 1.

Further down the list, Canadian indie-pop act Alvvays is chasing a first-ever U.K. top 10 appearance this week with Blue Rev (Transgressive). It’s set to appear at No. 9, which would easily eclipse the group’s previous best, a No. 28 peak for 2017’s Antisocialites.

Meanwhile, metal fans are flocking to Lamb Of God’s ninth studio album Omens (Nuclear Blast). The Virginia heavy rock exponents’ latest longplay is at No. 13 on the midweek survey.

Close behind is independent British singer and songwriter RJ Thompson, who’s on track for his second top 20 appearance, with Yearbook set for a No. 14 start.

Finally, Charlie Puth’s latest release Charlie (Atlantic) is on target to become his third U.K. top 20 album, new at No. 16 on the midweek list, while former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes could snag his first Top 20 LP in 15 years with Homosexual (Powdered Sugar), the Aussie pop singer’s fifth solo studio record. It’s new at No. 19 on the midweek chart.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published this Friday (Oct. 14).

‘This Is the Most Special Thing That’s Ever Happened to Me’: Watch an Exclusive Mini-Doc in Queer Producer Wreckno’s Homecoming Show at Electric Forest

In June of 2012, a wide-eyed Brandon Wisniski stepped out of his older brother’s car and into their future.

“I didn’t have a tent, I didn’t really have a plan,” Wisniski says. “I was just like, ‘We are going to Electric Forest,’ and it was the best experience I ever had in my life at that point.”

This past June, on the 10-year anniversary of that fateful leap, the producer-rapper-DJ now known to fans around the world as Wreckno returned to Electric Forest — but this time, their older brother didn’t turn around and go home after dropping them off at the edge of the campgrounds.

Instead, the younger Wisniski pulled their brother and mom with them on stage to perform a full-on live show with vocals, choreography and backup dancers, completing a full-circle moment now memorialized in the six-and-a-half minute documentary Homecoming Queen: An Electric Forest Success Story, shared for the first time below.

“Getting to really show who I am as a performer on stage,” Wisniski says, “then playing a song with my mom and my brother, and we all got to hug onstage? That’s probably the most pure thing that’s ever happened in my life.”

We caught up with Wisniski — who identifies with any and all gender pronouns — during a rare moment in their Detroit home. Just a three hour drive from their hometown in rural Manistee, MI (population: 6,200), Wisniski is also light-years away from the small town scene of their youth. (Electric Forest takes place an hour south of Manistee, in the similarly tiny/rural Rothbury, MI.)

“Growing up queer in a small town, I had a lot of love around me, but there’s certain things that you do that kind of waters yourself down so you can survive a little bit easier,” Wisniski says in the doc. “But I am very thankful as well, that I went through some of the things that I went through, because it makes me that much more fierce on stage and it makes me very proud to do things that I’m able to do now as a very out and loud queer person.”

As witnessed in the doc, Wreckno’s new live show takes as much inspiration from Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj as their collaborator GRiZ. (Wreckno collaborated with the fellow Michigander on the 2020 queer anthem “Medusa” and appeared onstage during GRiZ’s headlining set at Electric Forest this year.)

While Wreckno has only had the chance to perform the show four times — at Detroit Pride, Electric Forest, GRiZmas in July and Lollapalooza — those landmark events have forever changed the artist’s outlook.

“I feel bad, because every time I’m on stage now, I don’t have my crew,” Wisniski says. “Now I know the scope of the show I can give, and it feels like I’m reverting a little bit. I know all the choreography, but it doesn’t have the same impact when I’m TikTok dancing alone [in the DJ booth].” (Wreckno is currently on a North American club tour, and will do their next live performance at Red Rocks on Oct. 27, as part of Rezz’s Rezz Rocks IV.)

While this is all marking aa new chapter for Wreckno, it’s the end of a long first chapter for the boy that was. Homecoming Queen opens with a shot of baby Wisniski staring into the camera. We hear his mother on the other side of the lens, encouraging him to sing.

“When I first started teaching myself how to dance, I would watch ‘Bad Romance’ over and over until I knew all the steps — and she would have to deal with it,” Wisniski laughs. “She remembered me as a 16-year old coming back from [Electric Forest] with scrambled brain cells, like, ‘Hey!’ She had seen me do this for like 10 years … She knew I could do all this stuff. She knows who I want to be a performer, but [the Electric Forest show] was her first time really seeing it.”

On stage and on the mic, Wreckno’s persona has erupted into a spicy and powerful sexual being, as evidenced by the June single “Delusional,” on which Wreckno raps, “I got way too much drip to be stuck in a cubicle / And yo man can’t decide, am I sexy or beautiful?”

“A couple of years ago, I was just trying to convince myself of a lot of it,” the artist says, “and now I’m kind of like, ‘Oh no, I’m aware that we are awesome and kids wanna hear this.’ So I think that has changed, where like, I really believe some of the s–t I’m saying.”

That confidence is contagious, too. Walking through the Forest after their performance, Wreckno fans new and old approached the performer to thank them for their set. It was one, the fans said, that genuinely helped young queer kids, weirdos and dreamers of all genders, sexual orientations and personal backgrounds see themselves and their own strength put on a pedestal for all to appreciate.

“You talk about it from the time you’re booked, your dream festival… but the whole time, you don’t really know exactly how it’s going to go,” Wisniski says. “You never know who this will touch in the future.

The 16-year-old version of Wisniski would almost certainly agree.

Cardi B Shares Snippet of Her Verse on Ice Spice’s ‘Munch (Feelin’ U)’ — But Says It Won’t Be Released

Cardi B took to Instagram on Sunday (Oct. 9) to share a snippet of her verse on a recorded remix of Ice Spice‘s breakout hit, “Munch (Feelin’ U).”

“If you tell somebody we f—, but I ain’t nut, n—-, you cappin’ / N—-s a munch, eat it for breakfast / B—-es a scam, b—-es is desperate / B—-es be dirty, go get tested, way too easy, don’t wanna catch it,” Cardi raps over the drill beat, over a clip of the star showing off a black mini dress and strappy heels.

While fans were hyped to hear the fresh rendition of Ice Spice’s track, Cardi took to Instagram to reveal that the unofficial remix will not see a release date. “I’m not putting that song out by the way,” she tweeted. “You know I don’t tease.”

When asked why, she explained that she likes the song, but “don’t love it… just having fun.”

The Bronx rapper’s “Munch” has blown up over the past month and a half and now has 18.41 million on-demand U.S. streams, according to Luminate. Last month, Ice Spice signed with 10K projects, the label confirmed with Billboard.

Cardi, meanwhile, is fresh off the release of her GloRilla collaboration, “Tomorrow 2,”  which debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The track also opened at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the Memphis rapper her first top 10 visit — and first top 40 hit. It also extends Cardi B’s Hot 100 top 10 count to 11.

Mac Miller Raps on Robert Glasper’s New ‘Therapy Pt. 2’

Mac Miller‘s talent lives on, as the late rapper is featured on Robert Glasper‘s newest track, “Therapy, Pt. 2.”

“Give an inch, they take a mile, take a mile, I’ll take a acre/I’m a, alien communicator, f—ing up the human nature/Projectile vomit on a song, the fluid nasty, uh,” Miller raps on the sequel to Glasper’s 2014 song of the same name.

The song is “product of the friendship the two shared and perfectly encapsulates the musical gifts of both artists,” according to Miller’s estate, per Rolling Stone. “Anyone that followed Malcolm’s career closely is already aware of the respect he held for Robert’s work.”

“It was such an honor to have been able to do this joint with my bro @macmiller before he left us.. may his legacy live on,” Glasper wrote on Instagram celebrating the new track.

Miller passed away at age 26 on Sept. 7, 2018 from an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol, according to the toxicology report released by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office.

Artists’ Rights Groups Urge Grammy Consideration for Dissident Iranian Composer

Three Norway-based artists’ rights groups have written Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr. to request that the organization’s members consider the dangerous conditions under which dissident Iranian composer Mehdi Rajabian created his latest album, It Arrives, and the communications lockdown that has prevented him from promoting it in the lead-up to Grammy voting, which begins on Thursday (Oct. 13).

The letter to Mason, dated Oct. 10, was signed by Sverre Pedersen, the chair of Freemuse, a non-governmental organization that documents abuses of artistic freedom internationally and serves as a consultant to the United Nations; Han Ole Rian, president of CREO, Norway’s largest union for arts and culture; and Jan Lothe Eriksen, general manager of Safemuse, which provides safe havens and residencies for persecuted and endangered artists. The letter asks that as Grammy voters judge the merit of It Arrives, which Rajabian submitted for consideration in the new age, ambient and chant Grammy category, “We would like to underscore the very special situation this album was created under, with the producer and composer, Mehdi Rajabian, being isolated inside a totalitarian state, and musicians collaborating on the record over the Internet despite the very difficult working conditions.”

A number of Grammy-recognized musicians who appeared on the album, including singer Priya Darshini and violinist Curtis Stewart, conductor Amy Anderssen, who released It Arrives on her Higher Purpose Music label, and artistic freedom experts, such as Index on Censorship CEO Ruth Smeeth, added their signatures to letter as well. (See the letter in its entirety below.)

Pedersen, who says that Safemuse has been working with Rajabian since 2015 or 2016, explains that the composer is technically out on bail in Iran, and that “his parents house is covering for the bail.” If Rajabian were to leave Iran, he says, his parents would not only lose their home, “they would probably also be imprisoned.” As a result, Rajabian “is in limbo,” he adds. “He has to stay for the sake of his parents, and there is an active ban that he is not allowed to create or perform his music, even though he continues to do it.”

“There will need to be a change of regime for him to get out,” adds Safemuse’s Eriksen, who is also a musician. “That he actually managed to be creative and to work with people outside of Iran through the internet and come out with an album of that kind of quality – I am totally impressed.”

Mehdi Rajabian ‘It Arrives’

Rajabian, who was imprisoned twice in 2013 and 2015 for recording music and who suffered kidney damage due to torture and a 40-day hunger strike, according to Pedersen, released It Arrives, which was composed and recorded via the internet with an international group of Grammy-winning and nominated musicians, on Sept. 10. He gave an interview to Billboard earlier that month and created a “For Your Consideration” web page, but was unable to respond to interview requests and interest from other media outlets, including The New Yorker, NPR and The Washington Post as a result of the widespread protests in Iran that erupted after the country’s Islamic morality police, also known as the Guidance Patrol, killed 22-year-old Mahsa Amini for not wearing a hijab. In an attempt to quell the uprisings, Iran has blocked and filtered access to the internet and social media platforms. “Since advertising and important promotion-work have been obstructed during the period of voting and collecting votes for the album, we ask you to take these conditions into account in the assessment of Mehdi Rajabian’s album ‘It Arrives’ for the Grammy 2022,” the letter concludes.

While Grammy nominations won’t be announced until Nov. 15 and the awards won’t be handed out until Feb. 5, Pedersen says his cowriters and their organizations are hoping that Rajabian will be nominated and ultimately win the Grammy “because from our experience, when artist at risk in a totalitarian regime gets this kind of attention and awards, it’s, in a way, giving them better protection.” He adds that they also plan to reach out to record companies and musicians to spread the word about Rajabian and It Arrives: “We want to do what we can to improve his protection and reduce the risk of harassment and new imprisonment.” As the protests in Iran burn on, Pedersen says the morality police are targeting musicians and other artists because they are able to influence the masses. Based on his minimal communications with Rajabian, he says, “This is creating in him quite a lot of fear.”

In late September, Iranian songwriter Shervin Hajipour was arrested and later released on bail after his protest song about Amini, “Baraye,” went viral. According to a report in Variety, 95,000 fans of the song have submitted it for consideration for the “song for social change” special-merit award that will be introduced at the 2023 Grammys ceremony. (A “blue-ribbon committee” will choose the winner.)

In response to the letter sent by Pedersen, Rian and Eriksen, Recording Academy CEO Mason, who engineered and mastered Rajabian’s 2021 album, Coup of Gods, issued the following statement: “Our voters are instructed to evaluate music on its merits, period. No entry should be disadvantaged by an artist’s inability to draw attention to it.”

“Mehdi is a very strong and brave human rights defender,” says Pedersen. “He’s also quite an interesting musician in the way that he has been cooperating with musicians around the globe for years to come up with quite unique music pieces.”

Eriksen encourages artists who do enjoy artistic freedom to consider adding their voices in support of those who don’t. “In addition to Mehdi and other artists inside Iran, Afghanistan is a total disaster as well,” he says. “Still, people there are working as artists. It’s so important that artists who do have freedom of expression are aware that we have colleagues who are not in that position. This is a plea: be aware of this, and if you have any possibility to stand up or support, do so.”
