Tyler Thompson on Shifting From Top Movie Producer to Country Music Artist: ‘It’s Another Way to Tell Stories’

Tyler Thompson has already had a phenomenally successful career as the producer of such critically and commercially acclaimed films as Black Swan, Rush, American Made and The Trial of the Chicago 7, but the pandemic and a major life event made him reconsider some of his professional choices.

“We had our fourth child, Liv, at the height of lockdown. She was a premature baby and in the NICU for 35 days,” he tells Billboard. “I decided at that time that I wanted to move to the next chapter [with] another way to tell stories that no one could take away from me.”

The natural choice was music. However, there was one problem: Thompson could play guitar but couldn’t sing. With time on his hands during the shutdown, “I just started singing every day and took vocal lessons to get stronger and understand basics from someone who was classically trained,” the Louisiana native says. “I started working through songs at Tipitina’s in New Orleans while the venue was closed due to COVID, which in normal days would have never been possible.”

Thompson, 36, enlisted some powerful names to join him in the studio for the project, which he recorded over a two-year span. His friend, Rolling Stones drummer Steve Jordan, produced and played drums, Derek Trucks played guitar, and Pino Palladino played bass, with Thompson on guitar and vocals. He and noted singer/songwriter Will Hoge, who has written such hits as Eli Young Band’s “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” crafted the 10 songs on the album.

In the studio, “I realized early on that I was never going to be remembered as a phenomenal singer, so I focused on storytelling. That came naturally for me,” Thompson says.

His next step was getting signed to a label. Someone at RCA in New York introduced him to the team at sister company Sony Nashville and he tenaciously pursued getting a record deal. “They weren’t signing anyone new but liked the demos, which I continually bombarded them with,” Thompson says. “They passed and went quiet for six months. One day I randomly emailed them to check in with a couple of my new tracks attached, and I got a follow-up call with [Sony Nashville chairman/CEO] Randy Goodman and [vp of A&R] Margaret Tomlin. They liked the music and the sound and took a bet on me.”

“Tyler’s success in film proves his innate gift for identifying compelling stories and bringing them to a global audience,” Tomlin says. “We’re excited to be his partners for his next creative chapter and can’t wait to see how he connects with listeners in this new medium.”

His first song, “Won’t Take Long,” goes to streaming services Friday, but listeners can hear snippets of the midtempo track in the trailer below. Written by Hoge, it is the opening salvo from the full album still to come.

“It’s one of those breakup tracks about those younger relationships we have all had that usually stings more than you let on,” Thompson says of “Won’t Take Long.” “It’s the important part of storytelling that connects us all to these personal moments. Throughout my career, I have always been passionate about telling stories no one else was willing to tell and bringing back projects from the brink to give them new life. This happened when I made Black Swan, and that’s exactly what I believe we’re doing with this song, which was written by my pal Will several years ago.”

As Thompson, who has signed with CAA for representation for his music career, further explains in the trailer, making music is not that different from filmmaking. “A lot of it was tailoring the storytelling,” he says, “[It’s] no different than when you get a script for a movie.”

The trailer also shows Thompson in the studio working with Jordan in person and remotely and further explaining his mission. “I really wanted to do this … and it wasn’t about money and it wasn’t about fame, because I’ve seen all that sh– and it doesn’t mean anything to me,” he says. “At the end of the day, when you really find something you want to do and a real passion, at the end of the day, you’ll do anything for it.”

Though his immediate focus is on his music, Thompson is keeping his day job. The next film coming out through his Cross Creek Pictures is The Pale Blue Eye starring Christian Bale on Netflix.

Louis Tomlinson Embraces Change on New Single ‘Bigger Than Me’: Stream It Now

Get ready to meet a brand new Louis Tomlinson. On Thursday (Sept. 1), the 30-year-old singer-songwriter dropped “Bigger Than Me,” an anthemic track celebrating personal growth that serves as both the lead single off his newly announced album Faith In the Future, as well as his first release since 2020.

Tomlinson first announced the new single just one day prior to its release, sharing a teaser video on Instagram and writing, “This one is for all of you!” Earlier that same day, he’d announced that Faith In the Future was set for a Nov. 11 release, and unveiled both its cover and 14-song track list.

Now that he’s released “Bigger Than Me,” on which he sings about letting go of self-doubt and embracing change, the former boy band star has taken to Instagram once again. “So excited for you all to hear this!” he wrote, captioning an animated version of the single’s cover artwork.

According to the press release, “Bigger Than Me” is one of many tracks on Faith In the Future specifically written to translate well into live performance material. “It was my first moment of excitement making this record, and where it felt we were on to something which honors the live show,” Tomlinson said in a statement.

“I’ve always strived to be a very normal, humble person in this life, but there’s a line to that and a responsibility that comes from being in this position,” he continued. “I realized from doing those live shows what it means to my fans and how everything I do is bigger than me.”

“It’s almost a coming of age for myself and putting opinions about myself to the back of my mind and thinking about what it potentially means for other people,” he added.

“Bigger Than Me” is the first new music the “Back to You” singer has released since his 2020 solo artist debut, Walls, which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. Stream his new song below:

The Beatles’ North American Merch Rights Awarded to UMG’s Bravado

At the end of a long and winding road, Bravado scores North American merchandise rights for the Beatles, an arrangement that unites the legendary band’s records and merch under the one roof — Universal Music Group.

Through the new partnership, announced Thursday (Sept. 1), Bravado will develop new merchandise opportunities for the Fab Four across retail, licensing and e-commerce in the United States and Canada.

As part of that agreement with Apple Corp, UMG-owned Bravado will expand the Beatles’ presence across those markets by leveraging its retail and licensing partnerships and its ecommerce network to “supercharge direct-to-consumer efforts,” reads a statement.

It’s a coup for UMG, which has represented the Beatles’ recorded music catalog since 2012, and, three years later, facilitated the arrival of the Hall of Famers’ works on streaming platforms.

Now, a decade on, Bravado will handle shirts, hats and all the essential pieces of Beatles-branded kit which continues to prove popular with fans.

“Bringing the Beatles back to Bravado was a top priority of mine – not only as a fan of their music but as someone who is inspired by the creative and cultural impact they continue to have around the world,” comments Matt Young, president of Bravado in a statement. “The responsibility of representing such an iconic and beloved brand isn’t lost on me and we look forward to working with Jeff Jones and the Apple Corps team to continue to bring The Beatles’ vision to life.”

Today, notes a joint statement from UMG and Apple Corp., founded by the Beatles in 1968 to oversee the band’s own creative and business interests, the foursome of John, Paul, George and Ringo “remain one of the world’s most popular bands in the history of music.”

It’s impossible to deny. With a peerless bank of hits, and a classic, unchanged lineup, the Beatles set records everywhere. The band’s 15 No. 1 album in the U.K. is a record, and their dominance of the U.S. charts is without question, with 20 No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and 19 leaders on the Billboard 200.

The group’s 1 compilation was the bestselling album of the 2000s, a remarkable achievement for a band that had announced its split in 1970.

The story behind the band’s final recording sessions and live performance was retold by New Zealand director Peter Jackson in the marathon three-part docuseries, Get Back, which debuted last year on Disney+.

BTS’ RM Joins Korean Musical Collective Balming Tiger for ‘Sexy Nukim’

While BTS continue upon the “Chapter 2” in their careers, group leader RM makes his latest move by teaming up with the award-winning Korean musical collective Balming Tiger.

The self-described “multinational alternative K-pop band,” Balming Tiger is made up of nearly a dozen different creatives — including musicians, producers, directors, visual artists and writers  — working together since 2018 to represent the younger generation and popularize Asian culture on a global level. While the members simultaneously balance their own projects and careers, Balming Tiger releases feature various members coming together with new single “Sexy Nukim” marking their first in a year-and-a-half.

For their new hip-hop track “Sexy Nukin,” Balming Tiger brought rappers Omega Sapien (who recently featured Vernon of SEVENTEEN on a track), genre-hopping MC and songwriter Mudd the student (who scored a No. 1 hit in Korea after appearing on the popular hip-hop competition Show Me the Money), and rising producer-rapper bj wnjn, who was the main producer behind the single. Balming Tiger adding RM on their track marks the first time the collective has had an outside artist with a vocal feature.

Omega Sapien, Mudd the student, bj wnjn and RM all wrote on the track while Balming Tiger producer San Yawn — who’s known to be a friend of RM and has been in pictures on the star’s Instagram — acted as creative director for the project and co-produced the song.

Like an experimental indie film, the accompanying music video to “Sexy Nukin” is a multifaceted visual experience boasting a cinematic storyline, clever pop-culture references, plus trippy camera effects and cuts. Fans of Balming Tiger can also catch cameos from other members of the collective alongside the featured rappers. The video was directed by Japanese director Pennacky, who won Music Video of the Year alongside Balming Tiger at the 2020 Korean Hip-Hop Awards for “Armadillo.”

In a press release for the new single, Balming Tiger says, “We wanted to show ‘Asian sexy’ and ‘Asian cool’ through the music and visuals of the new single.” With more than seven million views across the four video teasers the group shared on Instagram ahead of the drop, no doubt the message will be well received and further boosted by RM’s global profile spotlighting a fully independent music collective from Korea.

Watch the “Sexy Nukim” video below now and look out for a compilation album from Balming Tiger in early 2023.

Dave Leads 2022 GRM Rated Awards Nominations: Full List

Dave is the leading contender for the 2022 GRM Rated Awards, which focuses on the U.K. rap and grime scene. The rapper received six nominations, including two each for both track of the year and video of the year.

Dave’s “Clash” (featuring Stormzy) is nominated in both categories. Dave’s other track of the year nominee is “Starlight,” which topped the Official U.K. Singles Chart for four weeks in March and April.  His other video of the year nominee is “Verdansk.”

Dave’s second studio album, We’re All Alone in This Together, is up for album of the year. The album topped the Official U.K. Albums Chart for two weeks in August 2021.

Other artists with multiple nominations include Aitch, ArrDee, Cleo Sol, K-Trap, Knucks, Little Simz, M Huncho, and Tion Wayne.

Like Dave, Aitch and K-Trap are competing with themselves in various categories. Aitch has two nominations for video of the year: “1989” and “Learning Curve.” K-Trap has two nods for mixtape of the year: “Trapo” and “Joints” (a collab with Blade Brown).

GRM Daily announced the nominations Thursday (Sept. 1). There are 10 categories, with 10 nominees in each category except for album of the year, where there are just eight nominees. This is the opposite of the Grammys’ approach, where there are five nominees in most categories, but 10 in each of the so-called “Big Four” categories – album, record and song of the year plus best new artist.

GRM Daily also announced that the show will return to a live format this year. The show will be held in central London. This year’s GRM Daily Rated Awards will be broadcast on E4 for the first time. Hosts and performers will be announced in the coming weeks.

GRM founder Post says, “I’m proud to be returning with our seventh Rated Awards and bringing an even more incredible show to screens this year.”

The nominations recognize achievements between June 1, 2021, and July 1, 2022. Voting is open now and will close Sept. 21. Fans can cast their votes at grmdaily.com/ratedawards.

The Rated Awards were founded by GRM Daily, which has chronicled the U.K. rap and grime scene for more than a decade. With 5 million subscribers and an online reach of more than 9 million, GRM claims to be the most viewed British music platform in the U.K.
