Here’s Why Some Billboard Charts Blend Genres

As artists continue to break new ground in exploring multiple genres – often within a single song – the scope of sounds can feel boundless.

Because not every song fits perfectly in one category, Billboard offers some charts that measure a combination of several types of music, to better encompass the wide variety that currently defines hit music.

Here’s a primer on Billboard‘s charts that blend genres, while also spotlighting individual styles – from R&B and hip-hop to rock and alternative, and more.

Meanwhile, you can browse all Billboard charts here.

R&B / Hip-Hop

Billboard publishes the combined Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, as well as the distilled Hot R&B Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. These surveys measure streaming, radio airplay and sales using the same methodology as the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.

Billboard also publishes Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, Top R&B Albums and Top Rap Albums charts.

The combined R&B/hip-hop charts, whose history dates back nine decades, measure the consumption and popularity of those individual genres and celebrate the artists who create music and score success in both.

Both combined and distinct format charts for R&B (both mainstream and adult) and hip-hop measure metrics covering streaming, airplay and sales, as well as the feats of songwriters and producers.

Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs originated in 1942 as the New York-focused Harlem Hit Parade and became the genre’s all-encompassing songs chart in October 1958 (concurrent with Hot Country Songs, whose similar earlier incarnations began in 1944, under the name Most Played Juke Box Folk Records). Top R&B Albums started in 1965.

As music takes new turns, Billboard has continuously sought industry feedback regarding chart menus and names. At times in its archives, Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs was known as Hot Rhythm & Blues Singles (1960s), Best Selling Soul Singles (’70s) and Hot Black Singles (’80s), among other iterations.

Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums received their most recent name changes in 1999, each adding “Hip-Hop.” According to a story announcing those updates in the Dec. 11, 1999, Billboard issue: “In four of the last five Billboard Year in Music spotlights, hip-hop titles were No. 1 in the Top R&B Albums category. The same label divisions that market and promote R&B fare also handle rap, and a number of leading R&B stations brand themselves as purveyors of both genres.”

Rock / Alternative

Billboard likewise publishes the combined Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, as well as the individualized Hot Rock Songs and Hot Alternative Songs lists, as well as the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart. These surveys measure streaming, airplay and sales using the same methodology as the all-genre Hot 100.

Billboard also publishes Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums, Top Alternative Albums and Top Hard Rock Albums charts.

As with the combined R&B/hip-hop charts, the blended rock and alternative tallies reflect the reach of acts who excel in music that straddles different sides of the ever-evolving rock and alternative genres.

Combined and individual format charts for rock, alternative, adult alternative and hard rock measure metrics spanning streaming, airplay and sales, as well as writers and producers.

Click here for background on the renamed Rock & Alternative charts, as announced in June.

Latin

Hot Latin Songs and Top Latin Albums, while billed as singularly “Latin,” highlight titles that fuse any combination of Latin music, from regional Mexican to pop, tropical and rhythm, along with individualized charts for those specific subgenres.

As with R&B and hip-hop, or rock and alternative, the same teams at record labels, streaming services, radio groups and more often work across a combination of these related, but distinct, genres.

The same holds true for Billboard‘s Christian and separate gospel charts, even as their artists cross-pollinate and work in other genres.

Other Combined Genres

Billboard similarly spotlights artists, songs and albums on the combined dance/electronic charts, most prominently on the multimetric Hot Dance/Electronic Songs and Top Dance/Electronic Albums rankings.

Plus, Americana/Folk Albums measures the top titles by acts that may lean more Americana or folk, or blend both. As with changes noted above, the chart, originally named Folk Albums in 2009, changed to its current name in 2016, again based in large part on industry consultation.

Other charts measure traditional and contemporary jazz, and traditional and crossover classical music, both together and in the more specific genres themselves.

Ultimately, Billboard charts are just tools to help fans and industry stakeholders sift through data, and by no means are meant to confine the infinite creativity that the artists on all these charts share. As music evolves, Billboard continuously evaluates and refines its chart offerings to best reflect the ever-changing landscape.

Car Break-Ins and Thefts Up, Says Springfield PD

Following a public education initiative earlier this year that saw car thefts fall, officers are reporting an uptick in the crime in recent months.

Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams said Thursday the department saw a 30% decrease in thefts during the first quarter of 2022, after SPD began educating drivers to not leave their keys inside their vehicles. Williams said they also warned drivers not to leave cars running.

Recently, however, he says those numbers have begun to creep back up.

Officers reported that nearly half of the vehicle thefts in Springfield recently have been due to residents leaving their keys inside the car.

Chief Williams says they will remain vigilant in educating drivers on how to prevent car thefts. He also stated the department is putting an increased focus on burglaries and robberies in the latter part of this year.

Hear Exclusive Splash House August 2022 Sets From Elohim, Polo & Pan and Dombresky

SoCal’s destination poolside dance party once again got crowds in motion earlier this month in Palm Springs, Calif.

The August editions of annual dance fest Splash House returned to the desert enclave Aug. 12-14 and then again on Aug. 19-21, 2022. These August events conclude Splash House’s first ever three-weekend season, which launched this past June.

The back-to-back weekends drew 7,000 fans per day to a trio of hotel pools, where a cadre of producers including Nora En Pure, Elderbrook, Malaa, Sonny Fodera, Dabin and PNAU delivered sets as daytime temps reached the low 100s. After dark, the party continued with nighttime sets at the Palm Springs Air Museum (yes, a real museum for real airplanes!), with sets from Claude VonStroke, SG Lewis, Seth Troxler and more.

The summer 2022 Splash House events marked the event’s first parties since 2019, with the pandemic shutting down the 2020 and 2021 editions. Those years notwithstanding, we’re staring down nearly a decade of Splash House, with the event debuting in 2013 during the peak of the dance music boom and becoming a destination fest for artists from around the world.

“It’s kind of hard to do live bands by the pool, I’ll tell you that,” Splash House Founder told Billboard in 2017. “DJs definitely work. Just the setting of the desert and Palm Springs — everywhere around you is palm trees and mountains — there’s certain styles of electronic music that just fit perfectly with the setting and atmosphere. It all fits and makes sense for me.”

Whether you were posted up on a pool floatie during the most recent iteration or simply couldn’t get there, you can get a sense of the fest through some of the music played there. Below we’ve got three sets as scorching as the desert heat in August, with a hypnotic set full of bounce and swagger from L.A.-based producer Elohim, summery sounds as light and refreshing as an ice-cold hard seltzer from French duo Polo & Pan and a tough, often pummeling and occasionally ecstatic set from fellow Frenchman Dombresky. Check ’em out below.

Saucy Santana Talks New Music, Collaborating With Madonna & Sony’s New Linkbuds: ‘I’m Always Setting New Goals to Elevate’

In the midst of Bad Bunny’s chart domination and Beyoncé once again changing the game with her Renaissance album, 2022 has spawned many pivotal and memorable arcs in pop music. While it might not be quite on the level of visibility of those superstars, the mainstream rise of Saucy Santana is also definitely one of the most interesting of these arcs.

After earning an Internet-driven hit in 2019 with his debut single “Walk Em Like a Dog,” 2021 found the rapper exploding across social media, thanks to songs like “Here We Go,” “Walk,” and “Material Girl.” Just this month (Aug. 5), Madonna blessed “Material Girl” with a remix that fused Saucy’s track with Madonna’s 1984 Billboard Hot 100 No. 2 hit of the same name. Saucy’s “Material Girl” has collected 56.7 million on-demand official U.S. streams to date, according to Luminate.

At the top of 2022, Saucy Santana unleashed an infectious collaboration with City Girls called “Shisha,” which appeared on Keep It Playa, his debut studio album. Soon after, the Florida rapper unleashed the Latto-featuring “Booty” and was named MTV’s PUSH Artist for August.

Saucy Santana’s catalog has earned 188.4 million on-demand official U.S. streams in all. “Booty,” which he is set to perform at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards pre-show, has garnered 11.7 million on-demand official U.S. streams on its own.

Beloved for his music as well as his Instagram live sessions with Yung Miami and hilarious online persona, the Florida-bred rapper has quickly become one of the genre’s biggest new stars. And he’s done it all while remaining unapologetically gay, Black, femme, and fat.

As the new face of Sony’s Linkbuds S Truly Wireless Earbuds, Saucy Santana is continuing his ascension with ease. The star took some time to chat with Billboard about his new brand deal, upcoming music plans, and his late-night television debut.

What’s it like being the face of Sony’s new LinkBuds S Truly Wireless Earbuds? How did this collaboration happen?

It was actually really big for me. I just remember Sony being a big company ever since I was a kid. For them to just want me or even just trust me to be the face of their brand was a really big deal. It’s not something that you would just wake up and think, “Oh I’m Saucy Santana, I’m gonna do a commercial with Sony!” It was actually a really proud moment for me. They reached out to my team, and I know my record label is affiliated with Sony, so they just brought the idea to me. Of course, I was with it!

Why Linkbuds? What do you like about them?

I got familiar with them once I did the commercial and played with them all day. You can tap them and it’ll pause the music and go quiet. When you’re listening to them, it’s so funny — because that’s how I like to be in my car. I listen to music so loud that I don’t hear nothing else that’s going on. There’s a feature where it’s just like… a suffocation with the headphones; you don’t know nothing that’s going on besides what’s in those headphones. I really love that because of traveling. Sometimes, I keep seeing fans outside like “Hey! Hey! Hey,” but when I have those headphones in, I’m like “Oh, boo, I ain’t even hear you. I was lost in the headphones.”

That must be the 360 Reality Audio Feature — how does that audio difference benefit your music specifically?

Well, I know with me, I love to have a lot of bass. I like a lot of booms in my music. I think I’m known a lot for my beats. That’s how I fall in love with music, I fall in love with the beat. So, for me, I think the beat choices that I have go perfect with the audio of the headphones.

What’s next after “Booty?” Are there any new singles on the horizon?

That’s what I’m working so hard at right now. I’m just trying to come up with a song that me and my team like collectively, so that I can get the next single rolled out. We just gotta think of the right timing. I’m ready, of course. I’m just trying to figure out what sound I’m feeling. Some days I wake up and like trap music, some days I wake up and like house music, some days I wake up and like vogue music. So, I’m just trying to figure out what I want to give the people next.

I have New York Fashion Week coming up, and I have a lot of performances that have to do with fashion week. So, I’m kinda in my head like “Should I do something that’s gonna do good for Fashion Week?” I’m just in my head a little bit right now.

How was shooting the “Booty” music video?

It was hot! It was hot, but it was fun just having a lot of my fans there. I specifically asked for a lot of plus-size boys. I feel like I’m in a place where I want to embrace my, what we call in our culture, fat femboys. Growing up being a gay boy and being fat and being feminine, I remember we used to have these dating sites and it’d say, “No fats, no femmes.” It was a big [thing] there where big gay boys were not accepted. That’s not what people desire, and that’s not what people wanted to see. And I came from that.

Now, I’m one of the pioneers of my culture and of gay rap. People think that gay looks like this, or gay looks like that, or this type of person is supposed to make it, or this type of person is appealing. Of course, I got surgery on my body and stuff, but before I was getting BBLs and all that, I was just a feminine fat boy rapping. I just want to embrace that and put that in the forefront.

You recently made your late-night television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Tell me a bit about that.

It was big! These are things that I asked for kinda early, like in 2013 when I first started rapping. I’m like, “Why I’m not on this? Why I’m not on Rolling Loud?” Just for all of this to come full circle is amazing. That was a whole other platform for me, introducing me to a different audience, it’s a really big deal. You see the greats on there. Meg Thee Stallion was just on there, my sister Latto was on there, I seen Gunna on there. A lot of big artists are on Jimmy Fallon, so that’s kind of like a big deal.

Do you have any other dream performance venues or spots that you want to hit in the coming years?

I want to do Jimmy Kimmel as well. I want to do these big festivals like Made in America. All of the hot spots that I seen when I first came into the industry. It’s like a pat on the back for me, sometimes,  when I’m able to accomplish those things. With doing Sony and being in a commercial, I want to do more commercials and movies. Whether it’s rap, whether it’s acting, whether it’s endorsements, I just want to cover all fields. I look at like Cardi B and stuff — like, you know, Cardi B got No. 1 hits, hey, she’s in movies, she’s in commercials. I think she’s in a Pepsi commercial. I want that.

You’re absolutely going to get that. I mean, you have a song with the Madonna now! What did that collaboration (“MATERIAL GWORRLLLLLLLL!”) mean to you at this point in your career?

That’s like an iconic, monumental kind of thing. It’s just like, who got a song with Madonna?! The same day my song with Madonna came out, Madonna and Beyoncé released a song together (“Break My Soul (The Queens Remix)”). That’s how big that is. Beyoncé got a song with Madonna, and for me to have a song with Madonna… that’s just not normal. People don’t just wake up with a song with Madonna. For me to just be hand-chosen by Madonna makes it so much bigger.

You also recently appeared on Caresha Please and it was so beautiful to watch. I love your relationship with City Girls. Could we see another collaboration with them on the horizon?

Yeah, we like family, so definitely. It’ll be how it was with me and Latto. Me and Latto had a song early in my career, and it kind of missed its moment, but we swung back around to it. So, I definitely see another City Girls x Santana collab.

We need a sequel to “Shisha!”

That’s how everybody feels! “Shisha” was for our core fans. “Shisha” hit City Girls and Santana lovers. I feel like me and Latto’s first song, “Up And Down,” was for Santana and Latto lovers at the time. I feel like “Booty” was more elevated and reached more people. So, I hope to do the same thing with my next collab with City Girls.

What are your go-to songs on your playlist right now? And, in addition to “Booty,” what was your song of the summer?

The go-to song on my playlist right now is “Her” by Megan Thee Stallion. I love SleazyWorld, he got a song called “Step 1.” “Ms. Davis” by Gucci Mane. “First Impression” by Gucci Mane, Yung Miami, and Quavo. “Pussy” by Latto. And I like “Don’t Play With It” by Lola Brooke.

“Booty” is probably my song of the summer. The whole video aspect was fun. It just gave block party, it gave outside… “Booty” is so fun to me! Every time I hear “Booty,” I just want to dance. That’s what summer is about. You put on your short shorts, your crop top, and you just get out there.

What are your major goals for 2023? What are you most proud of this year?

This year, I’m just most proud of the stages that I’ve been on, and the opportunities that me and my team have created for myself. Going on tour with Lizzo starting in September, is really huge for me. I’m always setting goals to elevate, but I’ve never had anything specific because things are kind of spontaneous for me.

Literally, I’m in the house cleaning, and my texts me. My mom’s a pastor and she texts me and she’s like, “I see Hollywood roles and I see a TV premiere with you on it.” And I was like, “Oh my God, for real?” And she said she was talking to one of our other pastors. Just a few months ago, she called me and told me that one of our pastors asked if I knew Lizzo, and I was like “No, I don’t know Lizzo.” He was like — he seen me and Lizzo collaborate together. Then fast forward, I’m about to go on tour with her! The manifestation is so crazy and God is always working in my life. I just try to stay ready.

Heather Morris Says Jennifer Lopez Cut Dancers From Auditions Because They Were Virgos

Virgo season is officially upon us, and as it turns out, not everyone is feeling the joy of Beyoncé‘s “Virgo’s Groove.”

One person who reportedly isn’t a fan of those born between August 23 and September 22 is Jennifer Lopez, who cut potential dancers from her tour audition process based on astrological sign, according to Glee star Heather Morris.

“Jennifer Lopez held an audition for dancers for one of her tours,” Morris said on the Just Sayin’ With Justin Martindale podcast this week. “She walks in the room and she said, ‘Thank you so much, you guys have worked so hard. By a show of hands if there are any Virgos in the room, can you just raise your hand?’”

Morris, who is an Aquarius herself, actually was not at that particular audition, but heard the “funny story” from others. “She looked at them and she said, ‘Thank you so much for coming.’ And they had to leave after a full day of auditioning for Jennifer Lopez,” she added. “Most of the time at a dance audition, you’re not getting paid, you’ve been there since 10 a.m. and you’re auditioning until 6 p.m.”

When Martindale asked if the former dancer’s story was true, she noted, “This is hearsay but true,” adding, “When one person says something, could be true [but] when multiple people say something … it’s like, ‘Oh, that happened.’”

Morris did admit that she might have “botched” the story and that it could have been a different astrological sign. However, she said Virgos “like things planned and neat” whereas the Marry Me star lives for “a little bit of chaos in her life.”

Billboard has reached out to Lopez’s reps for confirmation. While there is no official proof that the story is real, it is worth noting for fun that the “On the Floor” singer’s ex-husband, Marc Anthony, is a Virgo. Her new husband, Ben Affleck, is a Leo, so he’s in the clear.

Rod Stewart Imitates Elton John While Playing Piano: ‘Still Love You’

Rod Stewart ribbed Elton John for his iconic fashion and style on the piano on social media on Wednesday (Aug. 24).

During a recent show, Sir Rod donned a pair of circular, blinged-out glasses, wore a colorful jacket, and gave his best imitation of his fellow superstar behind the ivories, writing, “Still love you, Elt. Rod xxx.”

It appears that Sir Elton has yet to comment on the post or respond to the light jab, but two icons’ friendship — and rivalry — dates back decades at this point. In fact, the pair have been going tit for tat for more than half a century by now. Back in the late 1970s, Stewart launched his Blondes ‘ave More Fun tour only for Elton to famously pay for billboards with his face on the opposite side of the street reading, “But Brunettes make more money.” (A few years later, the “Rocket Man” singer also got the last word by quite literally shooting down a blimp promoting his rival’s music.)

In much more recent times, Stewart commented publicly on John’s long-running Farewell Yellow Brick Road retirement tour, calling it “dishonest” and “not very rock n’ roll” during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. Those were digs the latter addressed in his 2019 autobiography by writing, “I certainly didn’t feel like I needed a lecture on the feral spirit of rock and roll from someone who’d spent most of the last decade crooning his way through the Great American Songbook and ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.’”

Feud aside, Sir Elton is currently gearing up to release “Hold Me Closer,” his hotly anticipated duet remake of “Tiny Dancer” with Britney Spears. And earlier this summer, Stewart covered “Sweet Caroline” at the Queen’s Jubilee — much to the delight of Prince William and Prince George.

Watch Stewart mimic John onstage below.

In Demand: How Producer Jahaan Sweet Became a Secret Weapon For Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé & More

Jahaan Sweet’s first “oh my god” moment as a producer happened while working with Drake. “I used to listen to Drake in high school and looked up to everybody around him,” Sweet says. “When we finally went to Miami to work on Scorpion, I was like, ‘Wow, I’m really about to meet one of my favorite rappers.’”

Sweet co-produced a trio of tracks on the 2018 album, including “8 Out of 10,” “Ratchet Happy Birthday,” and “Final Fantasy” alongside Boi-1da, who brought him into the fold. Today, Sweet is a Grammy-winning producer with a growing list of production credits for artists such as Lana Del Rey, Jon Batiste (Sweet won his first Grammy, for album of the year, working on Batiste’s We Are), Kodak Black and Kali Uchis. “I feel like the majority of things that have happened for me with music have strictly been relationship based,” says Sweet. “The people that you’re around trusting in you, and you trusting in them.”

Having played piano since he was 6, Sweet aspired to become a jazz instrumentalist. By 13, he tried his hand at GarageBand and quickly fell in love with beatmaking. He always knew he would have a career in music, but it wasn’t until attending The Juilliard School that he found clarity on what his path would look like. “I realized the jazz route wasn’t necessarily what I wanted to do. I was rapping too, but realized I’m not the best at rapping — but I did love to create music. So I put all my energy towards that.”

After graduating, the Florida-born producer was pulled to Los Angeles by early collaborator Kehlani, who invited him on tour in support of her 2015 mixtape You Should Be Here. Sweet never looked back, laying down roots in L.A. and building his resume — and this year landing on some of 2022’s biggest releases from Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé and Giveon. Looking ahead, Sweet will join Lamar and his pgLang signee Baby Keem on tour to work on new music. “I’m definitely trying to focus on crafting a God given ability and cultivating relationships,” he says, “which is the base of my success.”

Kendrick Lamar

Through the height of the pandemic, Sweet says he and Lamar were cooking up music every day. The pair, along with Baby Keem, developed a strong bond, playing basketball during downtime and comparing Apple watch stats from their workouts. “We always cracking jokes and stuff like that,” Sweet says. “They are a lot more competitive than me.” From that time, Sweet landed three songs on Lamar’s Billboard 200 chart-topper Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers: Lead single “N95,” “Silent Hill” and “Rich Spirit.” Sweet is also credited on seven songs from Keem’s debut studio album, The Melodic Blue. “It’s deeper than music. The bond that has developed between us and everybody at pgLang around Kendrick and Keem has been great over the last almost three years now.”

Beyoncé

Boi1da continues to look out for Sweet, recently welcoming him into the recording process for Beyoncé’s Renaissance. The pair were in Miami working on different song ideas, along with frequent collaborator Sevn Thomas, when they started creating a beat that became “Heated,” which features Drake as a co-writer. Sweet admits to not knowing exactly what happened behind the scenes that led to the song becoming Bey’s but says, “I couldn’t even believe it. When I produce with 1da, we just in our own world making ideas. Things get sent to one person, then the next person. Next thing you know, boom, something happens.”

Giveon

Sweet describes working with R&B breakout Giveon as “an effortless collaboration.” Sweet first worked on Giveon’s pair of 2020 EPs When It’s All Said And Done and Take Time, linking up again for the artist’s 2022 debut studio album Give or Take, which hit No. 11 on the Billboard 200. Sweet worked on four tracks: “Remind Me,” “Another Heartbreak,” “For Tonight” and “Tryna Be.” He says of the lattermost, “‘Tryna Be’ was something I made at home with two of my friends from Juilliard, Enrique Sanchez and Braxton Cook. Giveon hears it and he’s like, ‘Oh, this is dope,’ and he writes a crazy song.”
