Tems’ ‘Free Mind’ Hits No. 1 on U.S. Afrobeats Songs Chart

Tems secures a piece of history as the first woman to reach No. 1 on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart as “Free Mind” rises from No. 3 to crown the list dated June 25. The track becomes the chart’s third overall leader since it launched this April.

The Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart ranks the 50 most popular Afrobeats songs in the country based on a weighted formula incorporating official streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of leading audio and video music services, plus download sales from top music retailers.

In the latest tracking week, which ended June 16, “Free Mind” registered 4.3 million official U.S. streams, down 1% compared to the previous week, according to Luminate. Though the song first appeared on Tems’ 2020 album, For Broken Ears, it has achieved its highest levels of stateside popularity this year. Of the single’s 77.4 million U.S. streams since its 2020 release, 59.2 million have come in 2022. Likewise, 8,000 of the track’s 10,000 in U.S. sales downloads have occurred this year.

Though radio airplay does not contribute to the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, part of the “Mind” surge may trace to U.S. radio. The single was serviced to U.S. radio formats amid its growth in streaming in sales and has reached No. 22 on both the audience-based R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and plays-based Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay charts this month. In the latest radio tracking week, ending June 19, “Mind” crossed the 5 million audience threshold on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart for the first time.

Plus, the “Mind” success aligns with Tems’ rising profile thanks to her featured roles on three Billboard Hot 100 hits in the last year: Wizkid’s “Essence,” which soared to No. 9 on the Hot 100 in 2021 following a remix with Justin Bieber, a guest turn on Drake’s “Fountains,” which debuted and peaked at No. 26 in September 2021, her first Hot 100 champ through a supporting spot on Future’s “Wait 4 U,” which also features Drake, in May 2022.

In addition to “Mind,” Tems lands 12 other songs on the 50-position Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, including three in the top 10. “Essence” ranks in the runner-up position, “Higher” is at No. 5 and “Found,” featuring Brent Faiyaz, rounds out the top 10 in the anchor slot.

Shakira Earns First No. 1 on Billboard Argentina Hot 100 Alongside Rauw Alejandro With ‘Te Felicito’

Shakira scores her first No. 1 on the Billboard Argentina Hot 100 chart as “Te Felicito,” with Rauw Alejandro, lifts 2-1 on the June 18-dated ranking. The track trades places with TINI’s “La Triple T,” through a 1-2 dip, after its fifth consecutive week at the lead.

It’s the first win for Shakira, dating back to her maiden visit to the tally with the top 20 “Clandestino,” with Maluma, in 2018. The “Te Felicito” climb, meanwhile, marks Rauw Alejandro’s third No. 1 among a collection of 33 entries: “Tattoo,” with Camilo (July 2020), “Todo de Ti” (June 2021), both one-week champs, and now “Te Felicito.”

The Argentina Hot 100 ranks the most popular songs within Argentina.  The ranking is based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of leading audio and video music services as well as national radio airplay and plays of songs featured on a variety of Argentine TV networks. Streaming data is provided by Luminate, while radio and TV measurement is tracked by BMAT/Vericast.

“Te Felicito” is the sixth collaborative title, among eight No. 1s, to lead the tally in 2022. Here’s the scoreboard:

Title, Artist, Peak Date

“Bar,” Tini & L-Gante (Jan. 1)
“Entre Nosotros,” Tiago pzk, LIT killa, Nicki Nicole & Maria Becerra (Jan. 8; nine weeks at No. 1)
“Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 49,” Bizarrap & Residente (March 5)
“Universo Paralelo,” La K’onga Featuring Nahuel Pennisi (March 19)
“Paulo Londra: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 23,” Paulo Londra & Bizarrap (April 30, two weeks at No. 1)
“Te Felicito,” Shakira & Rauw Alejandro (June 18)

Notably, the two other No. 1s belong to already winners Paulo Londra and TINi, both which have held atop the survey for five consecutive weeks as solo acts, unaccompanied by any other artist, with “Plan A” (starting the March 26-dated tally) and “La Triple T” (starting the chart dated May 14), respectively.

Meanwhile, Emilia and Nicki Nicole capture their seventh straight top 10 as “Intoxicao,” their first collaborative effort, lifts 12-8 in its third week.

Elsewhere, Bizarrap and Villano Antillano take the Hot Shot debut of the week thanks to their first collaboration “Villano Antillano: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 51,” which launches at No. 14. It’s the first appearance for the Puerto Rican queer rapper. Producer Bizarrap, meanwhile, earns his 33rd entry, 22 out of those coming from his ubiquitous music sessions.

Further, Perro Primo, El Noba, and Al Records’ “Trucho,” featuring DT.Bilardo takes the Greatest Gainer honors of the week streaking up 39 spots to No. 41. The song became Argentine cumbia singer El Noba’s first chart entry. He passed away June 3 from a motorcycle accident in his native Buenos Aires.

Lastly, other chart arrivals include BTS’ “Yet To Come” at No. 65, Manuel Turizo’s “La Bachata” at No. 90 and Rei’s “Fernet” at No. 92.

Marshmello & Khalid Debut on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart With ‘Numb’

Marshmello and Khalid debut at No. 4 on Billboard‘s multimetric Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart (dated June 25) with “Numb.” The top start for both acts, the song is Marshmello’s 13th top 10 and Khalid’s fourth.

“Numb” earned 4 million U.S. streams and sold nearly 1,000 downloads in its first week (June 10-16), according to Luminate. Concurrently, the track bows at No. 4 on both the Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs and Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales charts.

“Numb” is the long-awaited follow-up to the acts’ collab “Silence,” which led Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for a week in December 2017. Khalid’s sole leader, “Silence” served as Marshmello’s first of three No. 1s, ahead of “Wolves,” with Selena Gomez (11 weeks at No. 1, 2017-18), and “Happier,” with Bastille (69 weeks, 2018-19 – the record for the most weeks at No. 1 for any song in the chart’s nearly nine-and-a-half-year history).

On the Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart, Lady Gaga’s Dawn of Chromatica returns at No. 2, following the repressing and replenishment of its vinyl stock. The remix set surged by 525% to 5,200 equivalent album units, with 4,800 from album sales, including 4,200 on vinyl. The placement is the highest for the release since it debuted at No. 1 in September 2021. It’s the third time that it has returned to Top Dance/Electronic Albums, following prior vinyl and CD reissues.

Shifting to the Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, Irish DJ/producer Seamus D storms to his first top 10 with “Like That” (11-4). The track is drawing core-dance play on SiriusXM’s BPM, Music Choice’s Dance/EDM channel and WZFL (Revolution 93.5) Miami. (The Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart measures radio airplay on a select group of full-time dance stations, along with plays during mix shows on around 70 top 40-formatted reporters).

“Like” sports a prominent vocal sample of Rihanna’s 2016 dance, pop and R&B/hip-hop hit “Kiss It Better.”

Additionally on Dance/Mix Show Airplay, David Guetta achieves his 33rd top 10, Becky Hill adds her fifth and Ella Henderson earns her third with “Crazy What Love Can Do” (12-8). Guetta extends his lead for the most top 10s among all acts dating to the chart’s August 2003 inception; Rihanna is next with 24.

Billboard Explains: Queer Pride Anthems

Members of the LGBTQ+ community have a vast soundtrack of songs at their disposal to play every year when Pride Month comes around, but what exactly makes a songs a gay pride anthem? The latest episode of Billboard Explains dives in.

Much like the LGBTQ+ community itself, gay pride anthems are incredibly diverse and span a variety of genres and are performed by a range of musicians who inspire the courage to be your most authentic self.

One of the earliest hits emblematic of gay pride was Judy Garland‘s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” As the 1970s rolled around, ABBA delivered “Dancing Queen” and Queen offered up “Somebody to Love,” which both deeply resonated with the LGBTQ+ community. And in the 1980s, Sister Sledge, Diana Ross and The Weather Girls gave way to the now-anthemic tracks “We Are Family,” “I’m Coming Out” and “It’s Raining Men,” respectively.

Of course, modern-day divas like Mariah Carey, Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are gay icons, but it isn’t just pop singers who soundtrack Pride Month — even Disney movies like Encanto and Frozen provide inspiration, as unconventional of a choice as it may seem.

15 of the Biggest 21st Century Albums That Never Scored a Hot 100 No. 1 Hit

This week, Doja Cat notched yet another accomplishment with her blockbuster 2021 album Planet Her, with fifth official single “Get Into It (Yuh)” moving 13-7 on Billboard‘s Pop Airplay chart (dated June 25), becoming her fifth top 10 hit from the LP on the listing. It joins “Woman,” “Need to Know” and the SZA-featuring “Kiss Me More” — all of which topped the chart — and the Weeknd collab “You Right,” which peaked at No. 5. It also jumps to No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking her stunning sixth top 40 hit on the chart, following the four aforementioned singles and the briefly viral album cut “Ain’t S–t.”

However, even with all this single success, Planet Her has still yet to notch arguably the pinnacle pop achievement: a Hot 100 No. 1 hit. While her breakout Hot Pink smash “Say So” topped the listing in 2020 (greatly assisted by a remix featuring Nicki Minaj), none of the Planet Her hits have yet gotten higher than the No. 3 peak reached by lead single “Kiss Me More.” (The LP itself also has been thusfar denied the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart, held off in a close race during its first week by the debut of Tyler, the Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost.)

Still, Doja is in excellent historical company: Here are 15 other massive sets from artists this century that racked up all kinds of achievements and accolades, without ever seeing a song climb to the top of the Hot 100.

Chris Daughtry Opens Up About Guilt Over His Mom & Stepdaughter’s Deaths: ‘I Tend to Beat Myself Up a Lot Over It’

Chris Daughtry suffered great losses in a very short period of time last year. After first saying goodbye to his mother, who died of cancer in November, then his stepdaughter, who died by suicide a few days later, the former American Idol star is opening up on The Kelly Clarkson Show about the complicated feelings he’s been experiencing in the months since.

Speaking with Kelly Clarkson in a Thursday (June 23) appearance on her daytime talk show, the 42-year-old musician discussed what it was like to lose both his mother, Sandra, and Hannah, the daughter of his wife Deanna, in the span of days. “I dealt with both differently, processed both losses very differently,” he shared. “The common denominator in both is the guilt. The ‘I wish I would have said this. I wish I would’ve done this. I wish I would’ve called more.’”

Hannah’s death was particularly shocking, with the 25-year-old having been found dead in her Tennessee home by her boyfriend. Afterward, Daughtry released a statement that read: “I just recently in the last week lost my mother to cancer but I was blessed with the chance to say goodbye and I was processing it privately. We never got to say goodbye to our precious Hannah and it’s another huge hit to our family … Hannah, I love you and I miss you. I wish I could hold you. This hurts so deeply.”

“Those moments of the guilt is the hardest because you can’t do anything about it,” he continued to Clarkson. “There’s always going to be reminders of what you could’ve done or whatever, and I tend to beat myself up a lot over it.”

The Daughtry frontman also bonded with Clarkson over their shared American Idol rootsThe former came in fourth place on the singing competition show’s fifth season, meanwhile Clarkson famously won its very first year.

Watch Daughtry’s interview below:

Latin Artist on the Rise: Meet Ryan Castro, From Singing on Buses to Breakthrough Star

On TikTok, Ryan Castro’s “Mujeriego” sound has nearly two million video creations. People of all ages and parts of the world have connected with the vibrant merengue fusion that ultimately put Castro on the map. But 14 years ago, he was singing on local buses trying to make a living for himself.

“My story begins in my humble barrio of Pedregal (located in northern Medellín),” Castro tells Billboard. “Since I didn’t have enough resources for my studies, I began singing at bus stops and on the buses. That’s how I was able to buy my own clothes and support my household.”

A dreamer who was highly influenced by hip-hop biopics, such as Eminem’s 8 Mile and 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin,’ Castro said his first supporters were his friends from el barrio, who baptized him as their very own “cantante del ghetto” (singer from the ghetto).

His strategy back in the day consisted of uploading his music to YouTube and SoundCloud with no actual marketing plan. As his music got around locally, he landed on the radar of renowned Colombian artist Kevin Roldan, who he credits as being the first artist to “support my music and be involved in my project.”

It was then, about four years ago, that he decided to take his music career seriously and built a team. Now, with a strategic plan behind all of his releases, Castro has positioned his music internationally, with singles such as “Mujeriego” and “Jordan” entering both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts.

“‘Jordan’ is the song that everyone identifies me with,” he elaborates. “I feel it’s my biggest hit because it relates to urban street fashion and my personal flow. ‘Mujeriego,’ on the other hand, shows my versatile and explorative side. A lot of artists are criticized for taking the risk of doing other genres but I’ve gotten a lot of support from even the biggest merengue artists.”

Ryan Castro

Castro’s career has catapulted within the last year or so, not only establishing a friendship with Karol G but also opening up her “Bichota” show at the Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellín and nabbing the 2022 Heat Latin Music Award for best new artist. He’s also a two-time nominee at the forthcoming Premios Juventud for best male artist of the new generation and best social dance challenge for “Jordan.” In August, he will continue with his first-ever U.S. tour, presented by BC Management, which has already made successful pit stops in Miami, West Palm Beach, and Orlando.

As for an artist who derives from the barrios in Medallo and is Colombia’s breakthrough star of the moment, Castro owes it all to two things: dedication and support: “It’s the discipline I’ve had with my career,” he notes. “I work on the daily for my projects, dreams, and fans. I believe it’s a team effort of my audience and Ryan Castro as an artist.”

Learn more about this month’s Billboard Latin Artist on the Rise below:

Name: Bryan Castro

Age: 28

Recommended song: “Jordan”

What’s one thing we should know about the music scene in Medellín? There’s a lot of talent in the streets of Colombia. So many of them don’t even have social media or have the desire to become famous but they are very good singers and producers. I want people to know that emerging artists in the country are working hard with a lot of love and respect. There’s no war between the artists, on the contrary, we’re united, collaborating together so that the genre in our country can grow. I know one day they’ll have the same opportunities as I do.”

Major accomplishment: “I would have to say both of my tours in the U.S. and Europe. It’s so important for me to take my music outside of Colombia.”

What’s next: “I’m working on my first album called ‘El Cantante del Ghetto.’ I want it to have a lot of collaborations, especially with artists I grew up listening to. I’m putting a lot of love into it and I hope it marks the beginning of many beautiful things in my career.”

New Around the World: BTS Extends Global No. 1 Record With ‘Yet to Come’

Once again, BTS has released new material and shot it straight to the top of the global charts. “Yet to Come” debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, while arriving at No. 2 on the Billboard Global 200.

BTS banks its latest impressive arrival – “My Universe,” with Coldplay, debuted at No. 1 on both lists on the Oct. 9, 2021-dated lists. Last summer, “Permission to Dance” and “Butter” entered atop each ranking simultaneously. And stretching back to 2020, “Life Goes On” immediately claimed the top spot following the release of BE.

Including “Dynamite,” BTS now has six No. 1s on the Global Excl. U.S., matching their mark on the Global 200, which includes a week on top for “Savage Love,” the group’s collaboration with New Zealand’s Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo. That’s more chart-toppers than any other act on both lists, and not by a small amount.

No other artist has claimed more than two No. 1s on either global chart. Olivia Rodrigo has two on the Global 200 with “Driver’s License” (eight weeks) and “Good 4 U” (six), while Justin Bieber has hit the top twice on both lists, with “Peaches,” with Daniel Caesar and Giveon (two weeks Global 200; five weeks Global Excl. U.S.) and “Stay,” with The Kid Laroi (11; nine).

Beyond its newest No. 1, the South Korean septet floods the global charts with additional debuts from Proof, a three-disc anthology collection released on June 10. “Run BTS” enters at No. 8 on Global Excl. U.S. and No. 12 on the Global 200; “For Youth” at Nos. 21 and 30, respectively; and “Born Singer” at Nos. 31 and 36.

That bumps BTS’ total catalog of global chart hits to 19 on the former chart and 16 on the latter, dating back to the lists’ launch in September 2020.

The four new tracks combined for 183.5 million streams worldwide in the week ending June 16, according to Luminate. Each song derived 86-90% of its clicks from outside the U.S., lining up perfectly with the act’s older charting songs. “Butter” and “Dynamite,” both returning to the top 40 of Global Excl. U.S., sport international shares of 88% and 87% in the latest tracking week.

“Yet to Come” leads the new material on Billboard’s Hits of the World chart, topping lists in the Philippines and South Korea, while hitting the top 10 in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan. Interestingly, while the other three songs follow in the Philippines and Malaysia, “Yet” is the group’s only debut (and first charting song since the chart’s premiere in February) in its native South Korea.
